Background Matters: Portraiture and Place in Aotearoa | Kate Sheppard House
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Christchurch
A picture is a whole world unto itself. Step beyond the frame and see what you find. Background Matters: Portraiture and Place in Aotearoa asks what can be revealed when we view the sitter of a portrait in the expanded field of their surroundings. In bringing the background to the fore, this exhibition subverts the hierarchy of subject and setting to consider the portraiture of Aotearoa New Zealand from a fresh vantage point. Drawn from the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata and other key galleries and collections, these works reveal narratives of belonging, self-expression, creativity and care. Far from an afterthought or decorative embellishment, the settings of these portraits speak not only to the vision of their artists but to the lives lived by their sitters, which extend far beyond the boundary of a frame. Whether exterior or interior, playful or sincere, familiar or made strange, by bringing the background into focus this exhibition asks us to consider the worlds we inhabit and our places within them. This exhibition is curated by Maddie Brooks Gillespie. Bringing it to Christchurch is a collaborative partnership between the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. Photo credit: Robert Cross Maddie Brooks Gillespie (she/her) is an emerging curator and academic based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She is a recent graduate of the Tāhuhu Kōrero Toi Art History programme at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. Her practice centres primarily around the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Humanities, alongside explorations of memory, history, place and performance in art.

She will be joined by Jaenine Parkinson, Director of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, who will shed light on the impact of the Liz Stringer Curatorial Internship in fostering the careers of young curators, and the wider work of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery and its prizes. Christchurch
Welcome to our new fabulous Bournemouth home as we stage our multi-award winning shows at The Factory Space! Our headliner is the incredible Mike Gunn who’s TV appearances include: Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC1), Celebrity Deal or no Deal (CH 4), Harry Hill’s TV Burp (ITV). Mike Gunn’s history is as interesting and entertaining as his comedy. A misspent youth and a series of grim jobs cultivated his cynical outlook on life and a perverse desire led him to the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist, he describes himself as “not a natural choice for a career in laughter”. Early in his career Mike was supporting the likes of Jo Brand and Alan Davies and has supported Lee Mack on his huge UK tour. He now headlines at all the top comedy venues in the UK and is rapidly reaching cult status on the circuit. “Mike Gunn will make you die laughing” The Guardian “One of the 10 leading stand-ups in Britain” The Independent on Sunday To open this special show we had to bring you Mad Ron –The Third Hardest Man in Uxbridge (you will see what we mean on the night). Mad Ron is the comedy creation of Steve Lee and has been making people laugh for almost a decade. He’s taken the circuit by storm. Now a multi award winning act he will make you crack up! Also performing for your laughing pleasure is the very talented Johnny Wardlow who was part of the BBC New Comedy Awards 3 years running! Johnny’s based in Brighton and has delighted audiences all over the UK. A top night out to uplift the spirits and not break the bank.
