The York Grab Games | Weight Lifting Hall Of Fame
May 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
York
An exciting day of Grip Sport Competition at York Barbells legendary stage at The Weight Lifting Hall of Fame in York PA. This traditional grip strength competition will feature 4 lifts from historic feats preformed by some of the greatest strength showman idolized in the Hall of Fame. Apollons Axle (Apollon the Mighty, French strongman) 3 Saxon (Designed in honor of Arthur Saxon The Iron Master , German strongman) The Hub lift (A classic feat of strength started by lifting a York Barbell deep dish 45# plate by the hub, Steve Stanko could preform this with relative ease with 10# added to the 45# plate) The Little Big Horn (a historic feat preformed by blacksmiths and made popular by George Jowett in The Key to Might and Muscle ) These lifts will be preformed in the last man standing style where you may take as many weight jumps as you wish but when you miss a weight you are out for that lift. The Hub and Little Big Horn will be a 6 lift to a cross bar as lockout for implement lifts are hard to judge. Awards will be given for top three overall for men and women and depending on the size of the group there will be weightclass awards as well. I encourage anyone interested in grip strength and grip sport to come out and try. There will be plenty of people there to help out any novices or first timers as I know this to be among the friendliest of lifting communities. An Evening with Rosie Hewlett and Emily Hauser - York | Waterstones
May 6, 2025 (UTC+0)
York
Rosie Hewlett and Emily Hauser are coming to Waterstones York on 6th May, at 7pm. Read all about these amazing authors latest works while booking your ticket...
Rosie Hewlett, Medea: From an unmissable new voice comes the powerful and epic story of mythology's darkest heroine. Shunned. Persecuted. Tormented. Medea longs for a different life. Since childhood, she has been separated from her sister, shunned by her mother, and persecuted and tormented by her brother and father. All because of a unique and dangerous talent: witchcraft. Fierce. Powerful. Sorceress. But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece that her father fiercely protects, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. Her offer to help Jason overcome the trials set by her father sets in motion a journey that will test every ounce of her strength, magic and loyalty; a journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings and fall in love. When faced with the ultimate betrayal, Medea is driven to an act of desperation so brutal it rips apart the lives of everyone involved. Dr Emily Hauser, Mythica: Did you love Madeline Miller’s Circe? Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls? Jennifer Saint's Elektra? Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships? But did you ever wonder who the real women behind the myths of the Trojan War were? Now award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser takes readers on an epic journey to uncover the astonishing true story of the real women behind ancient Greece’s greatest legends – and the real heroes of those ancient epics, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Because, contrary to perceptions built up over three millennia, ancient history is not all about men – and it's not only men's stories that deserve to be told . . .
