BOOK LAUNCH: Stinkbug by Sinéad Stubbins | Brunswick Artists' Bar
Jun 11, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
Wild, shockingly funny and ultimately very wise, the much anticipated first novel by Sinéad Stubbins is a story about work, relationships and other nightmares. Perfect for fans of RF Kuang and Melissa Broder. To celebrate the launch of Stinkbug, Sinéad will be in conversation with author and cultural critic Brodie Lancaster. Brunswick Bound will be selling copies of Stinkbug on the evening for purchase, and Sinéad will be available to sign copies. Blurb:
You're a stinkbug and they're worried if they come near you, your stench will get all over them and they won't be able to wash it off.'
When Edith and a select group of employees at Winked advertising agency are sent to Consequi, an elite three-day work retreat in the remote mountains, she sees an opportunity to impress her bosses and dodge an inevitable restructure.
But this is no ordinary corporate retreat. Trapped together in the revamped convent, the threat of mass redundancy looming over them, their phones confiscated and the team-building activities becoming increasingly extreme, the 'work family's' cracks begin to widen – and Edith has a secret that threatens to make her the office outcast: the stinkbug. When Edith realises there's something suspicious about Consequi, she's faced with a decision: conform and shut up, or accept stinkbug status and find out what's really going on.
In this wildly original and deeply unhinged story, Sinéad Stubbins turns her keen but empathetic eye on the lies we tell about ourselves in order to belong. Part anxious millennial fever dream, part searing workplace satire, this corporate gothic novel is perfect for fans of Yellowface, Nightbitch and Such a Fun Age.

The Selkie Project | TW Explosives Factory
Jun 12, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
The Selkie: creature of myth; a seal who removes her sealskin to feel the pleasures of the human body for a night. But when the man she meets steals her sealskin, she is trapped on land. Grotesquely animal, bewildered by the human world, she is stuck in the wrong skins of woman and mother. And her hybrid, misfit daughter, the only one of her kind, is left struggling to escape the generational memory of the ocean. Melbourne theatre veterans Liminal Theatre and Performance return, in collaboration with writer/performer Georgie Durham, to present a new work of poetry and punk, exploring grotesque femininity, displacement, inheritance, and the freedom of being a misfit. Durham’s virtuosic one-woman performance of two characters is accompanied by immersive video projection and sound design by award-winning artists, videographer Ivanka Sokol and composer Meta Cohen, and live electric guitar (Stella Delmenico).

Grim Fandango by Charles Frederick | Hotel Spencer Bar & Grill
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
Hey Derivative Fiction Book Club, For our next session, we’re delving into Grim Fandango by Charles Frederick—a novelization inspired by the beloved cult-classic adventure game. With its unmistakable film noir atmosphere and richly imagined afterlife, this story blends hardboiled detective tropes with a surreal, comedic twist, making it a standout in genre-bending fiction. The novel follows Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the recently deceased, as he uncovers a sinister conspiracy in the Land of the Dead. Navigating a world of skeletal mobsters, corrupt officials, and a labyrinthine underworld, Manny must use his wits—and his charm—to untangle the mystery and set things right. Frederick’s prose captures the smoky allure of classic noir while staying true to the game’s humor and heart. With shadowy alleyways, smoky jazz clubs, and a charismatic cast of characters, this is a story dripping with style and intrigue. You can access the novel here:
Grim Fandango Novel by Charles Frederick (PDF) We’re excited to discuss how this novelization reinterprets its source material while paying homage to the noir classics it so brilliantly emulates. They’re loud, they’re loose, and they’re taking over country and coastal Victoria one pub at a time. No polished TV sets, no PR spin — just a group of savage comedians bringing the chaos, the banter, and the belly laughs straight to your backyard. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s funnier than it has any right to be.
