Celebrate the Release of "Welcome to Murder Week" with Author Karen Dukess! | Athena Books
Jun 11, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Beach
Join Athena Books to celebrate the release of Karen Dukess' new novel, Welcome to Murder Week! We couldn't be more thrilled to host Karen for this exciting evening of fun, cozy murder conversation and laughter. Karen will be joined in conversation by bestselling author and friend of the store, Annabel Monaghan. This is such a fantastic read to kick off your summer reading, and also a great gift for all the readers in your life. Join us! Your ticket to the event includes Welcome to Murder Week, wine, seltzer and light dessert. About Welcome to Murder Week: In this delightfully funny and heartfelt new novel from the author of the The Last Book Party, an American woman travels to the English countryside when she discovers tickets her late mother had purchased for a murder mystery simulation in a small British town. When thirty-four-year-old Cath loses her mostly absentee mother, she is ambivalent. With days of quiet, unassuming routine in Buffalo, New York, Cath consciously avoids the impulsive, thrill-seeking lifestyle that her mother once led. But when she’s forced to go through her mother’s things one afternoon, Cath is perplexed to find tickets for an upcoming “murder week” in England’s Peak District: a whole town has come together to stage a fake murder mystery to attract tourism to their quaint hamlet. Baffled but helplessly intrigued by her mother’s secret purchase, Cath decides to go on the trip herself—and begins a journey she never could have anticipated. Teaming up with her two cottage-mates, both ardent mystery lovers—Wyatt Green, forty, who works unhappily in his husband’s birding store, and Amity Clark, fifty, a divorced romance writer struggling with her novels—Cath sets about solving the “crime” and begins to unravel shocking truths about her mother along the way. Amidst a fling—or something more—with the handsome local maker of artisanal gin, Cath and her irresistibly charming fellow sleuths will find this week of fake murder may help them face up to a very real crossroads in their own lives. Witty, wise, and deliciously escapist, Welcome to Murder Week is a fresh, inventive twist on the murder mystery and a touching portrayal of one daughter’s reckoning with her grief, her past—and her own budding sense of adventure. Reviews of Welcome to Murder Week: “Full of intrigue and adventure, charm and heart, Welcome to Murder Week is downright enchanting! With characters you’ll want to befriend and an irresistible setting you’ll long to visit, this captivating story is as wise as it is fun. A double mystery, a touch of romance, and, above all, a truly perfect ending—I adored this book!” —Amy Poeppel, author of The Sweet Spot “An aching family mystery wrapped in a comedic whodunit with a delicious dose of travelogue and romance to boot? That’s Welcome to Murder Week: steamy, grief-struck escapism–as genre-defying as it is delightful.” —Catherine Newman, New York Times bestselling author of Sandwich “A trio of Americans trying to solve a fake murder in an English village is the novel I didn’t know I was waiting for. Get ready to lose yourself in this smart, funny, utterly original, five-star read.” —Annabel Monaghan, bestselling author of Nora Goes Off Script About Karen Dukess: Karen Dukess is the author of The Last Book Party (Henry Holt, 2019), which was an IndieNext and Discover New Writers pick. Her new novel, Welcome to Murder Week, will be published on June 10, 2025, by Scout Press, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. Karen is also the host of The Castle Hill Author Talks, a series of virtual and in-person interviews with some of today’s most exciting authors. Karen has been a tour guide in the former Soviet Union, a newspaper reporter in Florida, a magazine publisher in Russia, and a speechwriter on gender equality for the United Nations. She has a degree in Russian Studies from Brown University and a Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University. She lives with her family near New York City and spends as much time as possible in Truro on Cape Cod. 2025 Round the Head Swim, Clogherhead, Co. Louth | Clogherhead Beach
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Beach
Drogheda Triathlon Club are delighted to announce the return of The Clogherhead Round the Head Swim . This year we celebrate the 16th anniversary of this iconic swim event. What started as a fun swim with 6 swimmers taking on the challenge more to see if it was a viable swim than to set any records and the rest as they say is history. In 2016 we had a record 110 swimmers taking on the challenge and many of those swimmers have completed all 10 swims. Clogherhead is a beautiful setting for a swim, located as it is with the Cooley Mountains as a back drop and Dunany Head jutting out of Dundalk Bay. The swim route follows the majestic “Clogherhead” from the RNLI Lifeboat Station and finishes 2.5K later at the Harbour. Swimming around the head provides swimmers with the opportunity to see the superb geological features of the head and magnificent views of the Cooley Mountains to the North. The crystal clear water is full of sea life and if you are lucky you will see common dolphins, seals and on occasion basking sharks. Safety considerations: Safety is a major consideration for this event and we will compile a safety analysis and a safety plan that will address all foreseeable safety issues. This plan will be available to our insurance underwriters, Irish Coastguard and any other bodies that require it. Safety will be coordinated by the local Irish Coastguard who will provide land based personnel before during and after the swim. Water based safety will include a number of mobile boats, kayakers, paddle boards and safety swimmers. The swim will take place following a safety meeting on the morning of the swim considering all factors to ensure the safety of the participants. An impartial safety agent will have the final say as to whether the swim will go ahead. Intending swimmers should have completed a swim of at least 1.5K in open water 3 months before taking part in this swim and should be water fit. This is a fun swim however it is taking place in the open sea where the water temp is likely to be between 12 C and 15 C there can also be sea swell and waves to deal with. Unless you are accustomed to swimming in cold water it is recommended that you wear a wetsuit for this swim considering that you will likely be in water temp between 12 and 15 C for up to 1 hour. During the months of June, July and August Jellyfish are us usually present in the water around the Irish coast. While they are not harmful they do give off a sting which can be likened to a nasty nettle sting. Some people can suffer anaphylactic shock from jellyfish stings. Most people who are stung experience mild pain which passes in a short time following washing the affected area with sea water and taking some analgesic tablets. Practical information for swim day: The swim starts at the lifeboat station and finishes 2.5K north at the main harbour. In order to facilitate swimmers we will organise carpooling and also provide transport to move your swim bags and gear from the start to the finish area. We are very fortunate to have a fabulous fish shop located about 200 M from the swim finish which is well worth a visit for some chowder and sea fresh fish which is caught by their own trawler, couldn’t be fresher.
