This event will showcase two captivating art installations that delve into our relationship with the materials around us. Myles Merckel will present his thought-provoking installation, Magnetic_Zoology (2023), while Alicja Konkol will showcase her captivating video-essay, From Ore to More (2023). Both artists have recently won the prestigious KABK Waag Award 2023. Can materials truly speak? Merckel's work features the chirping of birds alongside the mechanical chirping of "bird-like" hard drives. By creating his own database of bird audio files labeled as "poor quality," Merckel highlights the resemblance between the chirping of birds and the squeaking sound of a malfunctioning hard drive. Through Magnetic_Zoology, he emphasizes how nature is often mediated by technology, a fact we often overlook. Konkol approaches the idea of speaking materials from a different perspective. By repeatedly melting and melding together archaeological artifacts from digital archives, she explores the breakdown and rearrangement of forms, along with the memories and entropies associated with them. In her project, silver emerges as a material that speaks not only when molded into a shape but also during the process of transmutation and transformation. The evening will include an artist talk by Myles Merckel, a video essay by Alicja Konkol, and a moderated discussion and Q&A session.
