William Shakespeare's World with Rosemarie Swinfield | Dittons Library
Mar 28, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Mercer
Join us at Dittons Library on Friday February 28th at 12.30pm to enjoy an afternoon hearing more about Shakespeare's journey from rural Stratford-Upon-Avon to Elizabethan London. Discover the pitfalls an aspiring actor / playwright would encounter living in a city of filthy narrow streets, pickpockets and vagabonds and the ever present possibility of the contents of a chamber pot landing on you as you went on your way. Learn why the playhouses were in Shoreditch outside the City gates, how the actors learned their parts and how much it cost for a seat at the Globe. Hear about the difficulties a players company had to navigate to present their productions at Court and about the man who held all power to grant that or not as the case might be. To be accepted as a successful playwright in fashionable Elizabethan society Shakespeare had to learn it’s rules. Not simply the etiquette of the correct bow or table manners but his clothes as well Strict limitations on what you could or could not wear according to your social status were enforced by Queen Elizabeth and later James Ist and woe be-tide a man who fell foul of them. Learn the perils of overpadding your breeches or choosing the wrong fabric for your outfit. In this thought provoking and amusing talk Elizabethan London opens it’s City gates a chink and reveals the world Shakespeare lived and succeeded in before retiring back to his quiet country birthplace.
