Greg Rappleye in Conversation with Emily W. Pease | Hub City Bookshop & Press
Jun 25, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
West
On June 25th at 6-7 PM poet Greg Rappleye will be joined by Hub City Press author Emily Pease for a discussion of Greg's latest poetry collection, Barley Child. RSVP on Eventbrite and get a 10% discount on the book when you present it at the bookshop register! About the BookBarley Child, Greg Rappleye’s fifth collection, draws from family legends, whispered stories, and sworn denials across four generations of Irish American lives—recalled, imagined, and reconstructed from census records, old letters, church registries, yellowed newspaper clippings, and a few odd photographs in which the human figures are often unnamed. The sum of these affidavits, arrayed across the lyric and narrative lines of these poems, is an electrifying human choir—male and female, child and adult, Irish and American—their voices rising out of shame, poverty, absurdity, violence, a strained Catholic faith, and a virulent legacy of madness and alcoholism.
Free of nostalgia and cant, with a sharp Irish wit that often braves nearly monstrous subject matter, and reported with eyes that seldom mist over, Barley Child is a volume that once again confirms Greg Rappleye as a poet of witness. About the AuthorGreg Rappleye is an Irish-American poet who teaches in the English Department of Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He is a former Bread Loaf Fellow and has published five full-length collections of poetry and several chapbooks. His awards include a Pushcart Prize, the Brittingham Prize in Poetry, the Arts & Letters Prize, and the 2021 Fish Prize in Poetry (Ireland) selected by Billy Collins, former poet laureate of the United States. He has been published widely in the United States and in Ireland, and his work has also been presented on RTE Radio 1, Irish Public Radio. Barley Child, his fifth collection of poetry, won the Miller Williams Prize in Poetry selected by the distinguished poet and editor Patricia Smith, and was published in 2025 by the University of Arkansas Press. About the Conversation PartnerEmily W. Pease’s collection of short stories, Let Me Out Here, won the 2018 C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize at Hub City Press, judged by Lee K. Abbott. Her stories appear in The Missouri Review (Editor’s Prize in Fiction, 1999), The Georgia Review, Shenandoah (Bevel Summers Prize in Short Fiction, 2014), Crazyhorse (Crazyshorts Prize, 2015), Witness, The Alaska Quarterly Review, Narrative online (Top Five Stories of the Week, 2017-2018), and the Kenyon Review online. In 2015, she was a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewannee Writers Conference. Before finishing her story collection, she worked for ten years on a novel about Abraham Lincoln’s last three weeks, a project she ultimately abandoned. That effort has found its way into poetry, including the poem, “Apologies to My Failed Book About the Most Famous Man” (yet unpublished). Her poetry appears in One, The Florida Review, Litmosphere, Juniper, and Rattle (Ekphrastic Challenge winner, June, 2021). A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Virginia Tech (MA, English), and the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers, Pease taught writing and creative writing at William & Mary for over twenty-five years. She lives in Williamsburg, VA with dogs, parakeets, chickens, and her husband, Ed. Snakes in the coop continue to provide a subject for poems.

The importance for all children to be able to fully participate in sports and recreational activities cannot be overstated. Aside from promoting physical and emotional well-being, these experiences teach children essential life skills such as learning how to be part of a team, establishing friendships, developing self-confidence, and simply taking part in the joy of play. As inclusion advocates, we don’t want to see any child held back or excluded from opportunities that can help them reach their full potential. It’s crucial for programs to provide all children every chance to live full, healthy, and active lives. It’s not enough to simply “accommodate” children with disabilities in existing programs; the goal should be to create inclusive programs that welcome all children to participate. Registration must be filled out to ensure your child gets a t-shirt. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16TbHj_EsNAP_lEV1Qhcpa6ecn1S6oyS_co-CNQI2i9k/edit

hOMe: 2018 – ∞ Solo Exhibition by Aušra Kleizaitė | SLA Art Space

hOMe: 2018 – ∞Solo Exhibition by Aušra Kleizaitė May 1–30, 2025 Opening reception: Thursday, May 1, 5-9 PM SLA Art Space | 307 W 30 th Street, New York Gallery Hours: Friday: 5-8 PM | Saturday 4-8 PM And by appointment. hOMe: 2018–∞, the first solo U.S. exhibition by Lithuanian artist Aušra Kleizaitė. Featuring a series of drawings created from 2018 to 2025, the exhibition explores themes of emotional safety, memory, and belonging through the elemental gesture of the line. Kleizaitė lives and works between Lithuania and India, and her work reflects this movement across cultures—drawing on both Eastern and Western visual languages. Her practice begins with a single dot and unfolds into trembling, breathing lines that evoke inner landscapes, spiritual reflection, and a quiet search for peace. Through paper, charcoal, and pastel, Kleizaitė conjures a dreamlike world where animals and human figures coexist—each in pursuit of stillness, fragility, and a sense of home. About the Artist: Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, Aušra Kleizaitė is a contemporary visual artist working across drawing, textile, and sculpture. Trained as a printmaker and textile artist, she creates expressive works on paper that explore the intersections of Eastern and Western aesthetics and cultural perspectives. At times, her drawings evolve into three-dimensional forms and become part of larger installations. Since 2002, Aušra has lived and worked between Vilnius—the Baroque capital and largest city in Lithuania—and the lush, overgrown jungles of India. In 2013, she visited Odisha, a state in India with roots in the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, and was deeply drawn to its cultural richness. Her regular travel between Lithuania and India continues to inform her work with fresh perspectives on human experience, relationships, and everyday life. Her practice reflects a sustained interest in the human condition—both spiritual and social. Guided by four principles—story, aesthetic, light, and emotion—she uses simple materials such as paper, charcoal, and pastel to tell layered, emotionally resonant stories. Her drawings explore the full spectrum of experience: war and peace, death and life, hatred and love, failure and belief. Aušra Kleizaitė has presented solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Ukraine, Georgia, and India. In 2004, she received the UNESCO-Aschberg Fellowship, and that same year was awarded The Best Artwork of the Year 2003 (Kaunas Picture Gallery, Lithuania) for her piece The Art of Being a Girl. History Revealed - Rubinski Works | Landmark Center
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
West
Ramsey County Historical Society welcomes Rubinski Works, aka Madison Holler, for an evening of conversation on her artwork. Madison’s work centers around beautiful jewelry that honors her Anishinaabe ancestry. “Nature is a huge inspiration in my work, so my roots in central Minnesota and in northern Minnesota (near my cabin on rainy lake) are engrained in my work, always. From the landscape to the flora and fauna — these are my muses.” Conversation moderated by Youa Vang. About Madison Holler: Madison R. Holler is the artist behind Rubinski Works, operating on Wahpekute + Anishinaabewaki Land (Central Minnesota). One-of-a-kind works are created by Madi with glass and metal seed beads on waxed thread. She also practices metal smithing techniques to construct abstract precious metal components for her work. Madison’s work explores the bridge between traditional craft and modern art practices. Her collections provide commentary on her shared Dutch, Scandinavian, and Anishinaabe heritage, with an emphasis on storytelling and folklore. Madison has a vocational background in photography and graphic design, as well as experience in fine art practices, such as ceramics, printmaking, painting, and illustration. Get Tickets

Join us on June 26th from 5:30p - 7:30p for an evening of conversation and candid reflection on the intersection of humor, art, free speech, and cultural boundaries. At a time when comedians and artists are navigating increasingly complex social norms, we’ll explore the tension between creative expression and social responsibility. When is offensive comedy or art just that—offensive—and when is it a necessary tool for social commentary or truth-telling? Hosted at the local comedy club, First Amendment Brew Haha, this event features local voices from the comedy world. Listen as they’ll reflect on the evolving role of comedy and art in civic life, the pressures of cancel culture, and what it means to push boundaries in an era of polarization. Panelist information can be found here. Enjoy sipping First Amendment Brew Haha's signature beer and coffee. _____________________________ After the Program! Stick around for a performance by Elliot Threatt! All registrants for the event get free admission into Elliot Threatt’s 7:30 pm performance.
