Amber Flame, an interdisciplinary artist, writer, activist, and educator, is excited to share her latest work, apocrifa. This captivating book is a nongendered love story told in verse, exploring the complex intersection of commitment and freedom. Drawing inspiration from the metaphors and structures of the Song of Songs, Flame's characters engage in a dance of intimate dialogue, inviting readers into their deepest thoughts through various poetic forms. Through apocrifa, Flame delves into the intricate themes of love, romance, sex, relationships, and affection by utilizing words that defy direct translation into English. These poetically defined words serve not only as titles but also as markers of the passage of time, amplifying the tension felt by one who yearns to love with endless intensity while being irresistibly drawn to the comforting embrace of a partner. Published by Red Hen Press, apocrifa is set to launch in May 2023. This follows Flame's previous collection, Ordinary Cruelty, which was published by Write Bloody Press in 2017. Flame's work has been recognized with prestigious residencies at Hedgebrook and Vermont Studio Center, and she has been published in notable platforms such as Def Jam Poetry, Nailed Magazine, Winter Tangerine, and Split This Rock. In addition to her writing endeavors, Flame works as a Program Director at Hedgebrook, where she curates events and programs that amplify the voices of women-identified writers. She also shares her passion for writing by teaching incarcerated women and youth. When she's not immersed in her creative pursuits, Flame can be found making music with her band Last of the RedHot Mamas, creating art, and nurturing her incredible child.
