THE HUMAN SURGE 3 (2023) with guest Eduardo Williams | Block Museum of Art

Theater
THE HUMAN SURGE 3 (2023) with guest Eduardo WilliamsScreening and discussion with guest filmmaker Eduardo “Teddy” Williams(Eduardo Williams, 2023, 121 min, DCP) Seven years after his debut feature THE HUMAN SURGE (2016) conjured a new cinematic vocabulary for navigating the age of digital global culture, Eduardo Williams returned to feature filmmaking with a not-quite sequel, THE HUMAN SURGE 3, which advances on its predecessor in its formal audacity, expansive scope, and hypnotic power. Adopting the digressive, world-roaming structure of role-playing games, THE HUMAN SURGE 3 tracks a cohort of characters–casting nonprofessional actors as avatars of global queer experience–as they wander and collide in far-flung locations in Sri Lanka, Peru, and Taiwan. While much has been made of the film’s technological novelty (Williams shot the film with a 360-degree camera, later framing the sequences by wearing a VR helmet), the film also returns us to the geographical, kinetic, and technological astonishment of early cinema, the emotional landscapes of Philippe Garrel, and the otherworldly immersion of Apichatpong Weerasethakul. One of the decade’s most original and essential films, THE HUMAN SURGE 3 forges, in the words of critic Beatrice Loayza, “a borderless realm rife with thrilling potential.” Following the film, Williams will appear for discussion and audience Q&A. Co-presented with support from the Michael and Jane Hoffman Visiting Artist Series and the MFA in Documentary Media at Northwestern. About the artist:Eduardo Teddy Williams (born 1987) is an Argentinean film director. He first studied at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, and then in Fresnoy, France, under the tutorship of Portuguese director Miguel Gomes. Williams works within an avant-garde/experimental tradition. His first feature film THE HUMAN SURGE won the Pardo D’oro in Locarno. His works have been presented at film festivals such as Cannes, Locarno, Toronto and New York. Image credit: A scene from Eduardo Williams's The Human Surge 3. Courtesy of Grasshopper Film. Please join us for an evening of music, dance, and an artist talk with the talented Chicago muralist Dorian Sylvain, and a dance performance by Chicago performer Charmayne Beverly. Dorian Sylvain is a painter whose color and texture explore ornamentation, pattern, and design as identifiers of cultural and historical foundations. She is a studio painter and muralist, as well as an art educator, curator, and community planner. We are also delighted to have a dance performance from Chicago dancer Charmayne Beverly. Charmayne’s favorite pastime and dedication focused on the love of dance. From High School dance troupes to Alvin Allie dance group in her late teens, Charmayne has remained dedicated to the love of dance. As prominent career advancement became her world, dancing became private performances in Charmayne’s church and the occasional women’s circle. To add to the charm of the evening, we will be providing a hot chocolate bar and pizza for all to enjoy. This will be the first community event for Fellow Sholo Beverly. With the theme of the show relating to murals, women, and nature, we will get our first taste of what’s to come for the final show. The EAC BIPOC Curatorial Fellowship serves as an extension of the Evanston Art Center’s non-profit mission to foster the appreciation and expression of the arts among diverse audiences. It also fulfills its vision to be widely recognized as a dynamic art education and exhibition center that encourages freedom of artistic expression and enriches cultural life. The EAC strives to be a hub of artistic endeavors, a passionate advocate for the arts, and a valuable partner for arts initiatives in the Evanston community. This project is partially funded by the Evanston Arts Council, in partnership with the City of Evanston, the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts. What's better than one local author at an indie bookstore? Two! On Wednesday, February 12, Nancy Johnson and Sonali Dev will discuss their latest novels, People of Means and There's Something About Mira. This event will be a lively discussion about craft and process, by the authors of two gems of fiction that sparkle in different ways. From USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev comes There's Something About Mira, the heartfelt story of a woman learning to write her own happy ending. Determined to reunite a lost ring with its owner, Mira, a put-together and happily engaged young professional, reluctantly joins forces with a brooding journalist. As the two must work together to track down the ring's owner, Mira wonders if her path might not be as set as she thought. Written by the acclaimed author of The Kindest Lie, Nancy Johnson's People of Means is a propulsive novel about a mother and daughter each seeking justice and following their dreams during moments of social reckoning—1960s Nashville and 1992 Chicago. Insightful, evocative, and richly imagined with stories of hidden history, this novel is an emotional tour de force that offers a glimpse into the quest for racial equality, the pursuit of personal and communal success, and the power of love and family ties. A native of Chicago’s South Side, Nancy Johnson worked for over a decade as an Emmy-nominated, award-winning television journalist at CBS and ABC affiliates nationwide. Her first book, The Kindest Lie, was a Book of the Month Club selection and a Target Book Club pick. A graduate of Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she lives in Chicago. USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev writes Bollywood-style love stories, which have been named Best Books of the Year by Library Journal, NPR, and others. She has won numerous accolades, including the American Library Association’s award for Best Romance. She lives in Chicagoland. Information Source: Bookends & Beginnings | eventbrite

Amy Halpern’s FALLING LESSONS (1992) with guest author Laura PaulFALLING LESSONS (Amy Halpern, 1992, 64 min, 16mm)Across a career that spanned over 50 years as both an experimental filmmaker, commercial cinematographer, and technician, the late Los Angeles-based filmmaker Amy Halpern (1953-2022) practiced her craft with a level of rigor, versatility, and care that made her a beloved and deeply influential figure to generations of makers, workers, and viewers of film. Among the ingenious landscape and nature studies, formal experiments, and unclassifiable provocations that make up her prodigious filmography, 1992’s FALLING LESSONS stands as the sole feature-length expression of her art. A fugue of vertical pans, beguiling close-ups, and narrative fragments, dotted with legendary figures from Shirley Clarke to Julie Dash and bound together with an exquisite musique concrète soundtrack, FALLING LESSONS doubles as a group portrait of her Los Angeles creative community and a vivid record of the psychic atmosphere of a city shaken by police violence and roiled by civil unrest. A work of rage and grace, seduction and refusal, it’s a film that only Amy Halpern could have made. For this screening, Block Cinema welcomes poet Laura Paul, author of the recently published Film Elegy (PRROBLEM Press), a book-length poem exploring her time working as Halpern’s apprentice. Paul will introduce FALLING LESSONS, preceded by Halpern’s Southern California landscape study, VERGE for my sisters (2022, 5 min), and will offer reflections on the work and selections from her poem in a discussion following the screening. FILMS SCREENED: VERGE for my sisters (2022, 5 min, 16mm courtesy of Canyon Cinema) FALLING LESSONS (1992, 64 min, 16mm courtesy of Canyon Cinema) This event is part of a city-wide celebration of Halpern’s films, presented in partnership with Pilsen’s Inga Bookshop, which will host Paul for a screening and reading of Halpern’s short 16mm films on Saturday, February 22; and with experimental film programmer and Tone Glow publisher Joshua Minsoo Kim, who will host a two-part program of Halpern films at Elastic Arts on Sunday, February 23. About the speaker: Laura Paul is a writer and artist who has been published in The Brooklyn Rail, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Comics Journal, and other outlets. Her work has been exhibited at the Armory Center for the Arts, Other Places Art Fair, L.A. Zine Fest, and West Hollywood Book Fair. She earned her B.A. in Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington, where she was named a Mary Gates Scholar in the Arts and Humanities, and her M.A. in Cinema and Media Studies from UCLA, where she received the Gilbert Cates Fellowship for Artistic and Academic Merit. Her book, Film Elegy, was released in October 2024 from PRROBLEM Press. To find out more, visit LauraPaulWriter.com. Information Source: The Block Museum of Art | eventbrite
