Craft
This winter we’re changing it up in the Family Studio, and letting imagination be our guide. We’ll still offer kids and their families with free space to develop their art-making skills by offering inspiration and ideas for projects, but we’re also giving folks the option to flex their creative muscles and work with the tools and materials provided to make something unique. We’ll introduce different materials every two weeks by upcycling the stuff we have a lot of – a skill you can continue to build at home with items you might once have overlooked. Inspired by the wealth of styles, ideas and ways of making found in Time Isn’t Real, our Family Open Studio is a place to try out new ideas and make something unexpected! Make good use of this versatile material by recycling scrap paper into artwork. We’ll have all the tools and extra supplies needed for collage, zines, greeting cards and paper-folding projects, and we’d love to see what you can dream up, too! Please Note: This program is meant for families to work together on art projects, so all children attending must be accompanied by an adult. Drop in any time between 1-4pm in the Family Studio. Space is limited to about 30 folks, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. While in the studio, please be mindful of other families wishing to participate! While you're here, you can check out our exhibitions and look for treasures on our Take + Make Cart! This cart, located just outside the Family Studio, is full of previously-loved art supplies. Take what you like and leave what you can, we're always accepting donations of art tools and supplies you're not using anymore. Information Source: Art Gallery of Burlington | eventbrite

Rocks, Repairs, and Relations | Art Gallery of Burlington

Burlington
Arts
Craft
Age: 18+ Dat: Saturday February 22, 2025 Time: 1 - 4 PM Cost: M $45 and NM $50 Instructor: Catherine Chan In her practice, Catherine Chan explores reciprocity and repair by working with rocks, minerals, and clay, both conceptually and as studio materials. In this workshop, she will demonstrate how to wrap rocks in textiles as an approach for deepening our relationship with the geologic materials that carry not only Earth’s history, but also our personal memories within them. Rocks are intimately connected to human existence and the evolution of civilizations. We imbue rocks with meaning, remember their animacy, and sometimes gather them as mementos of the experiences and places that shape who we are. In this workshop, we will be using fabric and simple hand-stitches to wrap a rock of your choice. All materials are provided but participants are encouraged to bring rocks and textiles of personal significance, if they wish. Prior experience with hand-stitching is helpful, but not necessary. When attending any of our public programs please consider bringing non-perishable food and hygiene products to donate to the Burlington Food Bank. Like so many communities, Burlington has seen an alarming 20% increase in the need for assistance with groceries over the last year. We are collecting community contributions to support the food bank’s efforts in meeting the growing demand for food security. About the Instructor: Catherine Chan is a transdisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of social and ecological change on human and geologic timescales. Working primarily in installation and photography, she uses narrative approaches to visualize philosophies of repair, reciprocity, and the ethics of care. Catherine holds an MFA (Studio Art), BFA (Photography), MSc (Soil Science), and a BSc (Biogeography), and has received funding from Canada Council for the Arts and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY: Please review the AGB's COVID-19 safety guidelines on our website before attending your first class.
