Buxton
This course will equip you with the skills you need to become a mountain bike leader. We’ll cover elements of group management, navigation, trailside maintenance, bike skills, skills assessments and your roles and responsibilities as a mountain bike leader. ' Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme' The MIAS scheme is aimed at safely introducing students of all ages to mountain biking in a variety of different venues. The scope of the Level 2 award allows the award holder to lead individuals and groups on lowland mountain biking routes within easy access to assistance in summer conditions. This would mean no more than a 30 minute walk from a telephone and shelter. This is a combined Level 1/ Level 2 training and assessment course. Depending on your previous experience of mountain biking there are a number of possible outcomes from the course: - Level 1 trained. As a candidate new to mountain biking you will leave with the training for L1 completed and will then need to gain further personal riding and group leadership experience and a 16 hour first aid qualification, before attending a one day assessment in the future to gain your L1 award. - Level 1 awarded and Level 2 trained. If you have the first aid qualification and some previous mountain biking experience you may well achieve a L1 award - this means you will be able to lead groups of students on easily accessible, low level terrain, non-technical cycle trails which have easy access should you have a problem. These trails won’t be in remote locations and can include way marked cycle tracks, canal tow paths, converted railways and forest tracks. This would also count as L2 training, before attending a one day L2 assessment. - Level 2 awarded. If you have significant mountain bike skills and experience, demonstrate strong navigation skills and hold a first aid award you may finish the course with a L2 award. The L2 award allows the leader to take groups into more open country, within 30 minutes of assistance, with technically more demanding terrain including loose surfaces, rocky terrain, single track and small drop offs. Course content Safety - Managing risk and risk assessments - Personal and group equipment - Dealing with common incidents - Riding on public highways - Group management and the role of the leader Personal riding skills - Body position - Braking - Cornering - Descending - Ascending - Use of gears - Front wheel lift - Dealing with trail obstacles e.g. small drop Coaching skills - Teaching principles - Look at different teaching styles Maintenance - Bike set-up - Bike safety check - Recording systems - Trail side repairs - Your tool kit Navigation and access - Route Planning - Route finding - Use of map and compass - GPS - Use of cycle computers - Where you are allowed to ride your bike - Access rights and conservation Although this is a full two days of training/assessment we won’t be riding all the time. Experience a Unique, Psychology-Based Approach to PhotographyHave you ever seen someone on the street you wanted to photograph but hesitated? I’ve worked through it and continue to manage it. This workshop is designed to help you move past fear, reframe self-doubt, and connect more deeply with yourself and the people you photograph. Rather than focusing on camera settings, we explore the psychology of connection, helping you transform your approach to photography—and life. The biggest improvement isn’t in the gear you use but in you- how you see, think, and engage with the world. You’ll learn techniques to approach strangers with confidence, shift self-talk, and foster trust—all in a supportive, small-group setting. It was almost like the workshop reintroduced me to the child in me. Inhibited yet daring. I thought I had lost her. - Sujata S I feel like I've known Gabrielle and some of the other participants for years despite the fact I had never even met any of them before! This speaks to Gabrielle's ability to create a really safe and welcoming learning space in which we were all able to connect with each other, support each other in this journey, and learn from each other. I have a deep hope that we stay in touch. - Julie B I just want to say what an incredible experience I found the workshop to be. I started off feeling really nervous and ended up actually enjoying stopping strangers and asking them for a portrait! I think being able to see Gabrielle at work and watch the reaction of the people who she asked for a portrait was a huge help. I feel like I’ve genuinely had a huge mindset shift that will not only help me in my photographic practice but in all areas of my life. - Katy D I can definitely recommend this workshop to everyone! The way it is structured allowed me to gradually (and quickly!) start and succeed! I loved the honesty and support throughout the whole afternoon. These are unstructured sessions where coaches will be on hand on request to assist you with practicing existing or working on new skills. We therefore ask that the athletes that attend are old enough to be able to practice in these conditions. No Show & Tell.
We will open the door at the start time of the event and let out athletes just before the finish time for athletes to be collected. Please note, once you are checked into this session and come into the gym, there is no front of house open during this time for guests/parents to wait.
We ask that you bring water in a named bottle, all jewellery is removed or taped up, hair is out of the face in a style that will last the duration of the session, you wear comfortable, sporting clothes along with bare feet or cheer shoes. Brave apparel can be bought from our on site pro shop, but neither the apparel or cheer shoes are compulsory. Our 'Cheer Shoe Recommendation' document can be found on the homepage of our website. We recommend outdoor shoes that can be slipped on and off rather than lace up shoes to avoid congestion.
Please ensure ALL items brought to Brave are clearly named, any lost property that is not named is disposed of at the end of each night.
Due to the positive and relaxed culture at Brave, we implement a closed session policy. We find this helps participants to feel at ease and confident to step outside their comfort zone to progress. If you require any feedback on your child's progress or have any questions please speak to the person on the front desk.
Please use the parking bays provided to the side and back of the premises, depending on the time of day there may also be roadside parking. Please avoid parking in the neighbouring businesses spaces whilst they are open.

Apr 26, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Norwich
Who for?
Our Learn to Ride course is designed specifically for children aged 4-10 years old who would like to learn how to ride a bike with pedals.
It is recommended that 4 year old's attend our
Balance Bike
course prior to attending this course.
Course Description
The course (4 x 1 hour sessions) will give children the skills and confidence required to ride a bike with pedals independently.
The course will teaches children how to:
Fit a helmet
Mount & dismount the bike
Balance
Steer
Brake
Pedal
We will do this by lowering the seats and removing the pedals from the children’s bikes for the first three sessions. This enables children to learn the skills with the reassurance of being able to put their feet on the ground if they lose their balance. This helps them to feel safe which builds their confidence. For the fourth session we put the pedals back on and teach them how to perform the skills whilst also pedaling.
This course will be held over the following 4 dates with sessions between 9.30-10.30am on each date. Riders are required to attend all four sessions
Saturday 26th April
Saturday 3rd May
Saturday 10th May
Saturday 17th May
All sessions are held outdoors on the school's playground.
Instructors encourage parents to observe all sessions so they can understand the skills being taught and help their child to practice outside of the sessions.
