A Conversation: Reggie Burrows Hodges and Davide Gasparotto | Karma

Jan 11, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Santa Monica

Fine Art
Karma presents a conversation between artist Reggie Burrows Hodges and senior curator of paintings and chair, curatorial affairs, at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Davide Gasparotto, on the occasion of Hodges’s exhibition Authorities of Reason at 7351 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles, on view from January 11–February 13, 2025. Reggie Burrows Hodges (b. 1965, Compton, California) explores storytelling and visual metaphor through paintings that engage with questions of identity, community, truth, and memory. Starting from a black ground, he develops the scene around his figures with painterly, foggy brushwork, playing with how perception is affected when the descriptive focus is placed not on human agents but on their surroundings. Figures materialize in recessive space, stripped of physical identifiers; bodies are described by their painted context. These formal decisions speak to Hodges’s embrace of tenuous ambiguities and his close observation of the relationship between humans and their environment. He lives in the Bay Area. Davide Gasparotto is senior curator of paintings and chair, curatorial affairs, at the J. Paul Getty Museum. He arrived at the Getty Museum from Modena, Italy, where he was the director of the Galleria Estense, a museum of Italian paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries. Gasparotto formerly served as curator at the National Gallery in Parma, and was a visiting fellow at both the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The author of many books, his areas of interest include painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts of the Renaissance, the rediscovery of classical antiquity between the Middle Ages and the 18th century, and the history of collecting. These programs are free, but space is limited. RSVP is essential. --- Reggie Burrows Hodges, Authorities of Reason January 11–February 13 Karma 7351 Santa Monica Boulevard Los Angeles --- Image: Reggie Burrows Hodges, Golden Triangle (Paris), 2023 Information Source: Karma | eventbrite

It’s a quiet but powerful rebellion—a retreat with the intention to heal, strengthen, and protect our artistic integrity and community. An empowering act for those feeling frustrated or disenfranchised by the social and political landscape, offering a vision of retreat that’s hopeful, intentional, and resilient. More about Palabras Literary Salon With a mission to create intercultural community building, Palabras is a salon inspired by our elders of civil rights consciousness raising and Maya Angelou's salons in the Harlem Renaissance. Our facilitator, Jen Cheng, brings home-cooking and light snacks to the event as we build bridges by breaking bread together. We sit in a non-heirarchical circle, without a stage. This is not an open-mic. Talk-story and witnessing are ways we can build better understanding of our humanity. More about Palabras on Jen's website: www.jencvoice.com/palabras More about our featured writer Cassandra Lane is the author of the memoir We Are Bridges (Feminist Press) and also the editor in chief of L.A. Parent magazine. More about Cassandra's full bio on her website. Community and Healing Through Plants Latinx with Plants is a woman of color owned business in Boyle Heights whose focus is to celebrate and uplift people of color in the plant world. While the shop began with an Instagram account that was at first dedicated to sharing fun memes, plant inspo, and plant parent goals, our community grew into something we never could have imagined. Our physical shop has been bouncing around Cesar Chavez Avenue for a couple of years, and in June of 2022, we relocated to our largest location yet. We hope that through plant parenthood, people will be able to deepen their connection with nature and the Earth, and tune into the healing that caring for plants can offer us. @latinxwithplants === Graphic: @JenCvoice Group photo is from July 2024 edition of Palabras Literary Salon .
