Catherine Bracy presents 'World Eaters' | Third Place Books Seward Park

May 12, 2025 (UTC-8)

Literary Arts
Third Place Books welcomes Founder and CEO of TechEquity Catherine Bracy for a discussion of her new book World Eaters: How Venture Capital is Cannibalizing the Economy. This book offers a window into how the most pernicious aspects of the venture capital ethos is reaching all areas of our lives, into everything from healthcare to food to entertainment to the labor market and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About World Eaters. . .The venture capital playbook, which has become dogma not just in tech but increasingly across the entire economy, causes unique harms to society, the economy, democracy, and in the lives of everyday people. Like late-stage capitalism on steroids, it calls for companies to seek total domination and to do it as fast as possible. What follows is a cascade of negative outcomes for society as a whole and the economy at large. Uber and Lyft steamrolling regulators. Facebook and YouTube relying on a revenue model that optimizes for misinformation and radicalization. The intractable diversity problem in the tech industry. Worker exploitation. These threats on their own are bad enough. But the practices of the venture capital world have begun to bleed into the rest of the economy creating staggering inequality, vanishing competition, and a redefinition of American entrepreneurship that shoehorns many founders with good ideas into an ill-fitting VC model, which can push their startups to failure before they even get off the ground. Luckily, it isn’t all doom and gloom. There are investors and founders, like Indie.vc and the companies aligned with the Zebra Movement, who have proven that another path is possible. But how do we create the conditions so that their version of capitalism – one that fosters competition, innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth – can thrive? What regulatory guardrails do we need to implement to prevent not just the worst behaviors of Facebook and Amazon but the rise of the rest? Readers will come away with deeper insights into the urgent decisions we must make about how to regulate tech. There is a future where a growing tech sector is welcomed as a boon for everyone rather than a threat to our economy, our public health and democracy as a whole. But to get there, we need to reckon with venture capital and the corrupted system it has created. Catherine Bracy is a civic technologist and community organizer whose work focuses on the intersection of technology and political and economic inequality. She is the Founder and CEO of TechEquity, was previously Code for America’s senior director of Partnerships and Ecosystem, and founded Code for All. During the 2012 election cycle she was director of Obama for America’s Technology Field Office in San Francisco, the first of its kind in American political history. She is a prolific public speaker for places like Axios and the Personal Democracy Forum. Her TED Talk “Why Good Hackers Make Good Citizens” has almost one million views. Her work has been highlighted in the LA Times, New York Times, and NPR. Writing from ten years after her father's death, she traces her experiences of becoming a stepparent, carrying on her dad's legacy, and, in unimaginable ways, bringing him back to life.Third Place Books and the North Cascades Institute present Cara Stoddard as part of our Spring 2025 Nature of Writing series! Stoddard will be discussing their debut memoir,Spirography: A Memoir of Family, Loss, and Finding Home, a coming-of-age memoir about the bond between a father and daughter, their intertwined illnesses, and the enduring love that persists even after death. This memoir follows Stoddard's intersecting experiences of cancer, grief, and sexuality, rooted in the suburban Midwest of the late twentieth century—where idyllic lake life, water sports, NASCAR, Christian rock, and a willful ignorance around queerness define the landscape. Spirography is a coming-of-age memoir about the bond between a father and daughter, their intertwined illnesses, and the enduring love that persists even after death. Set in the author's childhood home on a lake in Michigan, this lyrical archive of a family navigating crisis is an elegy not only for the memory of her father but also the end of her childhood spent outdoors. Stoddard takes the reader intimately through the checkpoints of her coming-of-age story—including working at a summer camp, moving to Colorado, falling in love, coming out—each leg of the journey backdropped by her father's declining health and the author's own incremental acceptance of this impending loss. Craig Mod with Liz Danzico — 'Things Become Other Things: A Walking Memoir' | Third Place Books

A transformative 300-mile walk along Japan's ancient pilgrimage routes and through depopulating villages inspires a heart-rending remembrance of a long-lost friend, documented in poignant, imaginative prose and remarkable photographyThird Place Books is thrilled to welcome writer, photographer, and walker Craig Modhis new book, Things Become Other Things: A Walking Memoir. Through the frame of a 300-mile-long pilgrimage walk, Things Become Other Things folds together history, literature, poetry, Shinto and Buddhist spirituality, and contemporary rural life in Japan via dozens of conversations with aging fishermen, multi-generational inn owners, farmers, and kissaten cafe “mamas.” Through sharp prose and his curious archive of photographs, he records evidence of floods and tsunamis, the disappearance of life on the peninsula, and the capricious fecundity of nature. Craig will be joined in conversation by designer and writer Liz Danzico. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Click here for more about our COVID-19 policies for in-person events. Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Things Become Other Things. . .Photographer and essayist Craig Mod is a veteran of long solo walks. But in 2021, during the Covid shutdown of Japan’s borders, one particular walk around the Kumano Kodō routes – the ancient pilgrimage paths of Japan’s southern Kii Peninsula — took on an unexpectedly personal new significance. While passing the peninsula’s shrinking villages, Mod found himself reflecting on his own childhood in a post-industrial American town, his experiences as an adoptee, his unlikely relocation to Japan as a student at age 19, and his relationship with one lost friend, whose life was tragically cut short after their paths diverged. As the days passed, he considered why he has walked so rigorously and religiously during his twenty-five years as an immigrant in Japan, contemplating the power of walking itself. For Mod, solo walks are a tool to change the very structure of his mind, to better himself, and to bear witness to a quiet grace visible only when “you’re bored out of your skull and the miles left are long.” Through the frame of a 300-mile-long pilgrimage walk, Things Become Other Things folds together history, literature, poetry, Shinto and Buddhist spirituality, and contemporary rural life in Japan via dozens of conversations with aging fishermen, multi-generational inn owners, farmers, and kissaten cafe “mamas.” Along the way, Mod communes with mountain fauna, marvels over evidence of bears and boars, and hopscotches around leeches. He encounters whispering priests and foul-mouthed little kids who ask him just what the heck are you, anyway? Through sharp prose and his curious archive of photographs, he records evidence of floods and tsunamis, the disappearance of life on the peninsula, and the capricious fecundity of nature. Things Become Other Things blends memoir and travel writing at their best, transporting readers to an otherwise inaccessible Japan, one only made visible through Mod’s unique bicultural lens. Craig Mod is a writer, photographer, and walker living in Tokyo, Japan. He is the author of four books, including Things Become Other Things and Kissa by Kissa. He is also the author of the newsletters Roden and Ridgeline and has contributed to The New York Times, The Atlantic, Wired, and other publications. Liz Danzico has an allegiance to vizslas and the writing of E.B. White. She lives and works as a designer and writer.
