About Resistance: Research group for the devised play The Little Black Fish | with the rubbles of old palaces
Nov 17, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Berlin
Reading and research group for the devised play
THE LITTLE BLACK FISH
organised by
Aline Suter, Caroline Canzler & Peri Nuranikhoshkhow Resistance – made up of the Latin prefix re- (meaning against ) and sistere (meaning to stand ) – is a concept that hasn’t played a major role in German public discourse for quite some time. Resistance might come up briefly in history class, whether in connection with the anti-fascist struggles in Europe or the Vietnam War. But while institutions and media often look back nostalgically at historical political resistance, praising the courage and dedication of those involved, current resistance movements are demonised, and their supporters are marginalised. Over the past year, we’ve seen this dynamic play out again in Germany. In our discussion group, we aim to critically engage with international anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial resistance groups. Together, we will research, discuss, and share ideas – without romanticising or demonising any of these movements. What are the things we need to resist? What does it mean to resist? Where does resistance begin, and where does it end? What parallels can we find among movements around the world, and what kinds of international solidarity emerge? What drives people to go against the grain, despite all the dangers? “What is the value of life or death for life itself?” – wonders the little black fish. At the heart of our discussion is the Iranian literary fairy tale The Little Black Fish – written in the 1960s by the writer, folklorist, and teacher Samad Behrangi. This story serves as an allegory for resistance and the quest for a better world. It’s considered one of the most significant political works of art in 20th-century Iran. Using this tale as our foundation, we will explore resistance movements in places like Palestine, Sudan, and Chile – looking at their similarities and differences, and asking ourselves what lessons we can draw from them. Our discussion sessions will eventually lead to the development of a theatre piece on the same theme, with the fairy tale as the thread that ties it all together, woven with international songs of resistance. DATES: November 3rd, 14-19pm: Freedom! November 17th, 14-19pm December 1st, 14-19pm December 15th, 14-19pm LANGUAGES: German, English REQUIREMENTS: We would like to ask you to read read the play in its entirety in preparation for the meetings.

The Good Sons (http://goodsons-band.de), zeichnet. Berlin
The division between arts and crafts has been the subject of numerous debates and influences the way people look at pottery. This problematic distinction is seen in many creative sectors, including textile arts and ceramics, often in the realm of feminine work . There are many ways to define the difference between art and crafts and very little agreement on the right way to make this distinction. Some speak of usefulness versus aesthetic quality. Some speak of art as something that transcends the here and now and makes a statement about culture. The exhibition will display a range of functional and non-functional pieces by contemporary artists who have been working in our studio. We hope the exhibition, in a place of active craft as opposed to a sterile gallery - a working ceramics studio - will encourage discussion. The vernissage will take place on November 22nd between 7pm and 9pm at our studio. The pieces will then remain in our studio for a week, serving as a backdrop to our classes and workshops, so you can observe them and engage in the conversation.

PANOPTICON | Max Planck Institute for Human Development
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Berlin
The show represents a study on the concept of total institutions as termed by Erving Goffman. The Turin-born, Berlin-based artist conducted her research over nearly two decades. The exhibition title references Jeremy Bentham's concept of the ideal prison, from which a guard, stationed in a central watchtower can observe all inmates without their knowledge. This built-in system of control mirrors the conditions of individuals living in total institutions, a term developed by Erving Goffman, which refers to places where people are actively isolated from broader societal interactions and their daily activities are strictly regulated by a central authority. The retrospective features works from Vitari's major series, focusing on three instances of total institutions. ● Percorsogalera (2007-09) explores the stories of inmates at the Lorusso e Cutugno penitentiary in Turin, Italy. ● Le città invisibili (2009-13) centers on the experiences of Radio Nikosia, an anti-psychiatry project based in Barcelona, Spain. ● Identità Interstiziali (2014 - ongoing) investigates the struggles of political refugees and asylum-seeking people in Berlin. Vitari’s experimentation with materials reflects the need to find new communication tools. The use of glass renders this process transparent yet complex and multilayered, while the use of silk-screening allows the incorporation of the stories and sketches of those living in total institutions. The glass objects are framed in iron structures, a cold, rigid material symbolizing the inflexibility that keeps individuals in these institutions detached from society. Social tensions are fixed in glass and exposed like a brutal social experiment. Through large-scale installations that border on performative acts, the show Panopticon aims to shed light on marginalized, almost invisible people. Vitari's ethnographic, psychological, and sociological research, conducted through the study of the scientific literature, allowed her to frame the issues. She additionally spent years speaking with people at risk of exclusion to better understand issues related to mental health, incarceration, and migration. Her works have been exhibited in Arts Santa Mònica (Barcelona), The Museum of Resistance (Turin), the Regional Natural Science Museum (Turin), the National Gallery of Sofia, and Le Nuove Museum (Turin), Palazzo Loredan in Venice. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with texts by Raffaella De Chirico (gallerist and curator), Roberto Mastroianni (philosopher, anthropologist, and art critic), and Jennifer Fielding (historian and sociologist).
