The middle branch of the trail went through Aurora and was known as the Starvation Trail . Learn why and see the landscape how westward travelers saw it over 150 years ago. There is little to no shade cover on this walk, so please bring sun protection and water. Content is written for adults. Join the upcoming 2023 Bataan Memorial Death March Qualifying Events in Hicks, Louisiana. This solemn event commemorates the brave soldiers who endured unimaginable hardships during World War II. On April 9, 1942, 75,000 US and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese forces after months of battling in extreme climates. Among them were members of the 200th Coast Artillery, New Mexico National Guard. During the Bataan Death March, these soldiers faced horrifying conditions, deprived of basic necessities and subjected to brutal treatment. Forced to march 65 miles through the scorching jungles of the Philippines, thousands lost their lives along the way. It wasn't until 1945 that the US-Filipino forces recaptured the lost territory and freed the prisoners of war. To honor their sacrifice and remember their courage, the Bataan Memorial Death March has become a significant event. Since its inception, participation has grown from about 100 to approximately 9,600 marchers, including both military personnel and civilians. Many march to challenge themselves, embrace competition, or foster unity within their units. Some also march in honor of family members or veterans who experienced the Bataan Death March or were taken as prisoners of war. The 2023 Bataan Memorial Death March Qualifying Events will take place on October 20 at the Alligator Lake Staging Area in Hicks. Remember to bring bottled water, bug spray, and a towel. The Sablemen club at ITTS offers a comprehensive course called Defensive Handgun I, which covers the basics of defensive handgun shooting, as well as tactical and accuracy shooting. This course is perfect for individuals who are new to firearms or have limited formal handgun training. It is also beneficial for experienced shooters who are seeking a review of the fundamentals or haven't received formal training. The course is designed to provide a strong understanding of modern gunfighting and defensive pistol use, making it an ideal foundation for our other courses. Defensive Handgun I is a two-part instructional course that includes both online and range sessions. The online session is held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while the range session takes place from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We provide all the necessary equipment, including gun rental for those who don't own a pistol. All you need to do is sign up, bring a belt and sunglasses, and we'll take care of the rest. Throughout the course, you'll cover a range of topics, including setting up a safe room in your home, the use of deadly force, handgun selection and setup, situational awareness, developing a combat mindset, firearms safety, fundamental shooting principles, drawing from the holster, loading and unloading techniques, and various shooting drills. You'll also have the opportunity to engage with steel targets and participate in shoot-off events. No prerequisites or prior experience are necessary to enroll in Defensive Handgun I.
