Exhibitions
Until November 2024, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMΣT) presents a cycle of exhibitions, in four parts, exclusively dedicated to the work of women artists or artists who identify as female, under the broader umbrella title, What if Women Ruled the World? On 8 March 2024, International Women’s Day, Part II of the exhibition cycle opened with six new projects by five international artists: Yael Bartana Claudia Comte Hadassah Emmerich Lola Flash Malvina Panagiotidi ___________________________________ Hadassah Emmerich | Epicurean Eden WHAT IF WOMEN RULED THE WORLD? Part || The mural will debut as part of the ‘What If Women Ruled the World’ Part II exhibition cycle, but will remain on display at the museum for a couple of years. Furthermore, the project is slated for completion in June, ideally aligning with the inauguration of ‘What If Women Ruled the World’ Part IV. Notably, the installation will include then specially crafted art rugs developed in collaboration with Art Rug Projects Athens. Hadassah Emmerich has become known for her exuberant paintings, collages and murals that intricately weave stylised representations of exotic fruit, body parts and vegetal elements into bold eroticised ornaments. Her work reflects an immersive and visceral exploration of the body and identity, navigating the realms of the sensory and the sensual while delving into the commodification of desire, the erotic and the exotic. The sensuality of her painting resides not only on the surface of the image, but also in her refined use of colour and technical execution. Since 2016, Emmerich has worked with a new painting technique, using stencils cut from vinyl flooring, which she covers with ink and then impresses onto canvas, paper or a wall. Referring to the visual language of advertising and Pop art, she creates images that examine the aestheticisation of the female body. She depicts the paradox of simultaneous attraction and repulsion, intimacy and cool detachment, seduction and critique. For the first presentation of her work in Greece, Emmerich has created a new large-scale, site-specific expansive wall painting which covers part of the museum’s ground floor foyer and mezzanine, taking over its entire education space. Consisting of several murals, a large frieze on the balcony of the mezzanine that connects to the ground floor and mezzanine, and several murals on the latter, including two monumental columns and sitting areas, the result is an immersive and colourful Gesamtkunstwerk. About Hadassah Emmerich *Heerlen (NL), 1974 Lives and works in Brussels Hadassah Emmerich studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht, HISK Flanders and Goldsmiths College, London. Recent exhibitions include: Skin of the Shapeshifter, SUPRAINFINIT, Bucharest (2023); Botanical Body Bliss, Galerie Ron Mandos Amsterdam (2023); False Flat, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (2022); Abrasive Paradise, Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort, NL (2022); Trailblazers, 150 years Royal Award for Painting, Royal Palace, Amsterdam (2021); BXL Universel II: multipli.city, CENTRALE for Contemporary Art, Brussels (2021), BuahTangan, ISA Art Gallery, Jakarta (2020); The Great Ephemeral Skin, De Garage, Mechelen (2019). Her work is held in numerous public collections including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, MuZee, Oostende, The Flemish Parliament and the Federal Government Collections, Brussels, Gemeentemuseum and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague and the Museum for Modern Art, Arnhem, NL. Hadassah Emmerich’s art is a multifaceted exploration that transcends conventional boundaries, inviting viewers into a world where sensuality, feminism, and identity intersect. With a commitment to pushing the limits of her creative process and addressing urgent themes with depth and self-awareness, Emmerich stands as a visionary artist shaping the contemporary art landscape. Body and identity, the sensory and the sensual, the commodification of the erotic and the exotic: these are frequently recurring themes in Hadassah Emmerich’s work. The sensuality of her painting resides not only on the surface of the (erotic) image but also in her refined use of colour and technical execution. Since 2016, Emmerich has worked with a new painting technique, using stencils cut from vinyl flooring, which she covers with ink and then impresses onto canvas, paper or a wall. Referring to the visual language of advertising and Pop art, she creates images that both aestheticise and problematize the female body. She depicts the paradox of simultaneous attraction and repulsion, intimacy and cool detachment, seduction and critique. In this way, Emmerich succeeds in making the act of looking truly provocative. - Nina Folkersma About EMΣT | The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens EMΣT | The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens is the leading national institution for contemporary art and visual culture in Greece, and one of the flagship institutions in Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. It began its operation in 2000. In the first years of its existence, it was a nomadic institution, hosted by institutions such as the Athens Concert Hall and the Athens Conservatoire, as its new home – the former Athenian landmark, the industrial modernist FIX brewery – was being retrofitted as a state-of-the art contemporary art museum. In 2015 it moved into its new premises while in 2020, a part of its collection was installed and EMΣT finally opened to the public. SUPPORTED BY The exhibition Hadassah Emmerich forms part of the Residency Program of the Project SUB 6.4, “Actions to promote Greek cultural exports and strengthen the Greek cultural name by the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens”, which is implemented within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. Hadassah Emmerich’s project is supported by the Mondriaan Fund.

Or when we get to lay in comfort with a partner watching Netflix and the world go by. The interesting parts are when all those things break down and you’re left in isolation to finally deal with the roots of whatever had been thwarting your existence all along. The interesting parts are when the world has turned its back on you and you have turned your back on it or them. When darkness could seemingly swallow you whole if it hasn’t already. When there is no such thing as hope and so you manufacture it from a dream which only angle is to survive. If all this sounds dramatic then you haven’t been there yet. If it doesn’t then you know that this is actually an understatement. The interesting parts of our stories are when they seem like the final chapter has been read and the book thrown in the fire. The interesting parts of our stories are written with the smoke of our burnt out lives. Come Back World is an album about rebirth and survival. At least that’s what it means to me. The title track I wrote in a little town on my way to aspen on a tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of Redemption’s Son. I was alone touring in a rented car driving myself across the country as a support act and doing what I could to rebuild my career. New management, eviction notices, an injured shoulder and most importantly estrangement from my family of origin. Discovering newly that my life and my soul had been ravaged for the most part covert forms of emotional abuse know. Commonly as NPD. The discovery of which is commonly followed by extreme isolation, PTSD, and the realization that nearly everything in your life needs to be built again. I realize this is an intense way to start a bio about a new album but there really is no other way to paint the story of how this album came to be if I want it to be anything resembling the truth. Because for me this album is all about surviving that predicament which for those unfamiliar with it will perhaps sound like madness (which it is ironically designed too) and for those that know about it and those that have survived it, will know that one can do little else but focus on the rebuilding, the bringing back of your world. Herman Hesse said the best art comes from necessity and this art certainly qualifies. I had nothing but songs to get me out of the hole I was in.The songs themselves aren’t all literal interpretations of what I was going through but the strength of them comes from the fact that I needed them to be good enough to deliver some kind of life back too me. A life I had lost that wasn’t gonna get found. But perhaps a new life could be built. A better one. One that wasn’t rooted in lies. – JA Abe Partridge is a heralded musician, singer/songwriter, visual artist, storyteller and documentarian based in Mobile, Alabama. Since the release of his debut album Cotton Fields and Blood for Days in 2018, Partridge has toured relentlessly, including several tours throughout Europe. He is a regular at several great music festivals such as the 30a Songwriters Fest , and the Laurel Cove Music Fest as well as listening rooms across the country including the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Eddies Attic in Atlanta, and Duke's in Indianapolis. Recently, he toured extensively with Matthew Sweet, Drivin' N Cryin' , and Dar Williams in support of his latest release Love in the Dark . He has performed on several syndicated NPR radio programs including, Mountain Stage anda Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. Partridge along with co-producer Ferrill Gibbs created the Alabama Astronaut podcast, where Abe attempts to properly record songs previously undocumented at holiness, serpent-handling churches in Appalachia. It was in the Top Ten documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release and now has over 100k downloads and a 4.9-star rating. When Partridge is not writing or touring, he is also a highly acclaimed visual artist. His paintings, primarily acrylic on tarred board and watercolors, now hang in art galleries around the southeast and in the private collections of Tyler Childers, Mike Wolfe (American Pickers), Rick Hirsch (Wet Willie), Tommy Stinson (The Replacements) and Tommy Prine . Abe's art is featured yearly at Howard Finster's Paradise Gardens . His artwork was featured in Stephen King ’s 2019 sequel to The Shining - Dr. Sleep . He painted the cover art for Charlie Parr ’s, Last Of The Better Days Ahead (Smithsonian Folkways). He also created art for Tyler Childers ’ 2022 release, Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? (RCA) , as well as promotional posters for the Red Clay Strays' 2024 release Made by These Moments (RCA). Partridge's first major art exhibition With Signs Following was on display at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center in Mobile, AL in 2023. His book "With Signs Following - Portraits + Stories from the Serpent-Handling Faith" released following the exhibit to wide acclaim . Three members of the Red Clay Strays occasionally join Abe for a punk side-project they share together, The Psych Peas . They have one album, Lackluster , that has only been released on physical formats. The band has created a reputation for giving high-energy, chaotic live performances, and has garnered a cult-like following. John P. Strohm of The Lemonheads compared them to " Scratch Acid and Butthole Surfers in their prime". Abe also works with the legendary North Carolina songwriter, David Childers and his band The Serpents . Together, they are The Satan, You're a Liars , with an album, Let's Build This House Together, released on vinyl, CD, digital download, and Bandcamp in early 2025. He is now gearing up for a 2026 release of a new album produced by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth . American Songwriter Magazine said, “Abe Partridge has established himself as one of the most respected songwriters and visual folk artists in the southeast.” Information Source: Aubrey Entertainment | eventbrite
