Third Place Books welcomes Spencer Sunshine to our Seward Park store for a discussion of his book, Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege. A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism . . .A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen—including the infamous Atomwaffen Division. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. First, it shows how Mason’s vision arose from debates by 1970s neo-Nazis who splintered off the American Nazi Party/National Socialist White People's Party and spun off a terrorist faction. Second, it unveils how four 1980s countercultural figures—musicians Boyd Rice and Michael Moynihan, Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, and Satanist Nikolas Schreck—discovered, promoted, and published Mason. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism explores a previously overlooked period and unearths the hidden connections between a countercultural clique and violent neo-Nazis—which together have set the template for today’s Neo-nazi terrorist underground. It is obligatory reading for those interested in contemporary terrorism, postwar countercultures, and the history of the U.S. Far Right and neo-Nazism. Spencer Sunshine (spencersunshine.com) has written about the Far Right for two decades, publishing on platforms like the Southern Poverty Law Center, Daily Beast, Truthout, and JTA. His latest book is Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege (Routledge, 2024). Where is taverner Tom Merchet? Owen Archer unearths a series of troubling secrets and a dangerous foe intent on retribution when his good friend goes missing.Third Place Books is thrilled to welcome Candace Robb to our Ravenna store for a discussion of the fifteenth book in the Owen Archer series, A Snake in the Barley. Robb will be joined in conversation by JB Dickey, owner of the Seattle Mystery Bookshop which closed its doors in 2017. About A Snake in the Barley. . . A standout . . . Robb reinforces her place among the top writers of medieval historicals - Publishers Weekly Starred Review York, 1377. Owen Archer is determined to find his friend, taverner Tom Merchet, who has been missing for five days. His wife, Bess, is frantic with worry. AN ENIGMATIC STRANGER. Who is the elusive Widow Cobb that Tom was seen visiting? And who is the man spotted following Tom before he vanished? As Owen hunts for clues, Bess decides to visit the widow’s lodgings and makes a terrifying discovery. RETRIBUTION IS BREWING . . . Owen digs up past sins and long-buried secrets that answer some of the questions surrounding Tom’s disappearance. But who is the sly and malevolent figure intent on destroying his friend, and why? A shocking confession will rock Owen to his core . . . An action-packed, evocative and masterfully plotted medieval mystery in the critically acclaimed Owen Archer series, perfect for fans of C.J. Sansom, Ellis Peters and Paul Doherty. Candace Robb loves spending time in the 14th century, so much so that she’s written 3 crime series set in the period, the Owen Archer and the Kate Clifford series set in York, and the Margaret Kerr series set in Scotland. She swears it’s just happenstance that her longest running series, the Owen Archer (15 books and writing) stars a sexy one-eyed spy. Severn House has re- released the first 10 in the series for the US and Canadian markets, while also publishing the ongoing books, the latest A Snake in the Barley. Publishers Weekly’s starred review of the previous book, A Fox in the Fold, said, “Excellent…This is a mystery with both high stakes and a layer of true feeling. Robb reinforces her place among the top writers of medieval historicals.” Candace lives in Seattle and considers York her second home. Visit her website and blog at www.candacerobbbooks.com. A Kansas City native, JB Dickey vowed during his first PNW winter in Eugene for grad school that he’d never stay past the two-year program. That was 1981 and he’s rusted into this corner of the country. He’s done many jobs – bartender, taught painting, jazz dj, residential construction, hardware cashier – and he met Candace in 1993 while working at the Seattle Mystery Bookshop, which he did for all of the 27 years of its murderous history. Side Quest Book Club: Sorcery and Small Magics, by Maiga Doocy | Upstairs at Bow

Bow
Arts
Literary Arts
Desperate to undo the curse binding them to each other, an impulsive sorcerer and his curmudgeonly rival venture deep into a magical forest in search of a counterspell—only to discover that magic might not be the only thing pulling them together. Leovander Loveage is a master of small magics. He can summon butterflies with a song, or turn someone’s hair pink by snapping his fingers. Such minor charms don’t earn him much admiration from other sorcerers (or his father), but anything more elaborate always blows up in his face. Which is why Leo vowed years ago to never again write powerful magic. That is, until a mix-up involving a forbidden spell binds Leo to obey the commands of his longtime nemesis, Sebastian Grimm. Grimm is Leo’s complete opposite—respected, exceptionally talented, and an absolutely insufferable curmudgeon. The only thing they agree on is that getting caught using forbidden magic would mean the end of their careers. They need a counterspell, and fast. But Grimm casts spells, he doesn’t undo them, and Leo doesn’t mess with powerful magic. Chasing rumors of a powerful sorcerer with a knack for undoing curses, Leo and Grimm enter the Unquiet Wood, a forest infested with murderous monsters and dangerous outlaws alike. To dissolve the curse, they’ll have to uncover the true depths of Leo’s magic, set aside their long-standing rivalry, and—much to their horror—work together. Even as an odd spark of attraction flares between them. ---------------- Tickets for this event are $5, which can be used as $5 credit towards a purchase at SQBG on the day of the event.Upstairs at Bow is located on the Bow Market balcony, in the back right corner. There is an elevator for accessibility in the lobby of Bow Market, to the right of the driveway when you first arrive. In Shakespeare's plays, male characters often dominate, yet the few female roles are crucial, highlighting women’s defiance and ambition. Although Shakespeare's women seldom wield political power, they are just as ambitious and ruthless as their male counterparts. They are depicted as strong and complex figures, exemplified by characters like Beatrice, Lady Macbeth, and Juliet. Shakespeare provides vivid imagery and descriptions of his characters which Tessa has brought to life in the form of enamel jewellery pieces. Tessa Morrison joins us to talk about her book Bejewelling Shakespeare's Women and the pieces she has created as the result of her research. Terms and Conditions: · SMILE!
