Philosophy Meets Buddhism Seminars with Gus Santo | Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple and Meditation Center

Aug 5, 2025 (UTC-5)
Woodstock
Cultural Experiences
All are welcome! Join Gus for a deep dive and lively discussion about philosophy and Buddhism! Each seminar meets on Tuesday evenings from 6-7p for 4 consecutive weeks and the last week includes a wrap-up pizza party! Each seminar has a one-time fee of $40 (non-refundable) and all proceeds are donated to the Blue Lotus Temple. 2025 Seminar Schedule May 6th, 13th, 20th, & 27th. 6 pm – 7 pm. Plato and the Buddha on Forms: Both of these thinkers talk about Forms. But their meditations on appearances lead them to drawing very different conclusions from their experience of form. Plato imagines a separate world to secure the eternal being of intelligible ideas. The Buddha, on the other hand, saw forms and names as ephemeral—manifestations of mere appearances in an ever-changing manifold. August 5th, 12th, 19th, & 26th. 6 pm – 7 pm. Stoicism and the Dharma: Buddhism has humorously been described in the West as Stoicism on steroids. Even though the Buddha antedates the Greek stoics by two hundred years, and the Buddha flourished in an Indian culture quite different from the pagan culture of ancient Europe, both Stoicism and Buddhism agree on the importance of the search inward for the causes of suffering. October 7th, 14th, 21st, & 28th. 6 pm – 7 pm. The Phenomenology of the Buddha and Edmund Husserl: Phenomenology is just a learned word which means looking at appearances and seeing what is truly present, in order to distinguish appearance from mirage and illusion. The courageous Buddha’s insight into what is truly present in appearances goes one step further than the German Philosopher was willing to go. This seminar is key to understanding how Western and Eastern thinking differ and where they agree in surprising ways. About the Instructor: Following his service in the U.S. Army as a drill sergeant, Gus Santo became a Benedictine monk for six years and studied philosophy, monastic history & theology. After graduating summa cum laude from St. John’s University he was appointed an instructor as a member of the philosophy faculty at St. John’s. Later, Gus left the monastic life and worked as a job analyst at City Hall in Chicago for the Department of Human Resources. When he retired from the City of Chicago he became an MHP (Mental Health Professional) at Pioneer Center in McHenry, Illinois. He became a dharmic practitioner in 2020. Gus has taught a variety of adult education philosophy classes at Unitarian Universalist Churches in Hartland, Wisconsin, and McHenry, and has led a number of seminars on Western Philosophy and Buddhism here at the Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock. About this event The Trump Administration is counting on us believing we are alone and powerless but when individuals come together as we are doing at protest demonstrations across the nation, we create real power. Stand up for justice at this benefit concert for the Indivisible Hurley/Woodstock and Indivisible Ulster chapters featuring world-class musical talent on Sunday, August 17 from 2-7p.m. at the Colony in Woodstock. Indivisible is a national grassroots movement of thousands of Indivisible groups and millions of members throughout the U.S. with a mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda. Indivisible was a partner in the June 14 No Kings Day rallies when millions turned out in all 50 states and commonwealths to protest Trumps’s power grab. But it costs money to take down an autocracy. Concert proceeds will fund local efforts to raise money for a billboard with a pro-democracy message on Route 28, foot the bill to stage large-scale demonstrations in our community, and launch an Indivisible podcast for the Hudson Valley. The event will take place rain or shine (outdoors in the Colony beer garden if weather permits; indoors if it does not.) Racoma w/ Blue Ranger SAT April 5th, 2025 Doors 6pm | Show 7pm RACOMA Seattle-based band Racoma crafts a front porch soundscape where indie and folk influences intertwine, evoking a casual warmth like reconnecting with an old friend. Glenn Haider’s earnest vocals are complemented by Spencer Templeman’s dynamic drum sound and Sean Collopy’s lyrical guitar. Each person’s element is essential, like voices in the heartfelt conversations that make up Racoma’s songs. Their collective sound radiates human connection, with emotional depth that draws listeners in to reflect long after the music fades. For their next album, Racoma is continuing to keep things fresh by diving into something a bit different. The band partnered with fly-fishing bassist Garret Gue to record live takes directly to analog tape at Sage Arts Recording Studio, capturing a lively and melodic approach rich with spontaneity and unafraid of imperfections. In Vine is playful and looser, capturing wistful joy in a way that feels both intimate and raw. The heartfelt, live recording of In Vine brings Racoma’s energy straight to the songs, inviting listeners to feel like they’re right in the room, immersed in every story. The stripped-down process felt like the perfect way to capture the group’s latest sound that mixes old and new in a captivating and nostalgic way. https://www.racomamusic.com/ Information Source: Colony Woodstock | eventbrite

Trapt — Full Band Acoustic Tour WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM Trapt is an alternative band from Los Gatos, California, USA. The band formed in 1995, after meeting in high school, with members: Chris Taylor Brown (vocalist), Simon Ormandy (guitarist), Peter Charrell (bassist) and David Stege (drummer) and recorded the albums 'Amalgamation' and 'Glimpse' to sell at local shows. After several rehearsal absences and negative feedback the band decided to let David go. While attempting to find a suitable replacement, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records and began recording their debut self-titled album. The band enlisted Robin Diaz, to perform drums on the record, and in turn Robin, helped the band find their permanent drummer, Aaron Montgomery. On November 22nd, 2002, the band released Trapt, along with the single "Headstrong". "Headstrong" became a fantastic hit, reaching #1 on alternative charts and #16 on pop. Follow-up singles "Still Frame" and "Echo" (with a video featuring Michelle Trachtenberg) did respectably, although they never reached the heights of "Headstrong". "Headstrong" became the official theme song of WWE Bad Blood for June 2003. Trapt eventually hit platinum. After more than one year an EP followed on March 30th, 2004, that included a new song called "Promise" along with live versions of "Made Of Glass" and "Echo". On September 13th, 2005, the band released their sophomore album "Someone In Control" along with the single "Stand Up". "Stand Up" failed to do as well as any of their previous singles, although it still made an excellent run on active rock stations. "Waiting" and "Disconnected (Out Of Touch)", were also released as singles, and have yet to repeat the success of any of Trapt's self-titled radio hits. The band spent the first half of 2006 co-headlining with Shinedown as part of the Equinox Tour. A live album was released in September, 2007, containing live tracks from both previous albums with new studio tracks "Stay Alive" and "Everything to Lose". Trapt hit the studio in July 2007 to begin recording their 3rd album, which was released on 5th August 2008 named "Only Through the Pain…". Trapt announced in late fall/early winter 2009 they were working on a new album for summer or fall release in 2010. On July 20, 2010, Trapt released their first single "Sound Off," for the upcoming album "No Apologies," due out in stores October 12, 2010. Schleigho w/ Shay and Tyres SAT April 12th, 2025 Doors 6pm | Show 7pm Schleigho Schleigho (pronounced shlay-ho) was formed at Berklee in 1993 and was touring around the country a year later. The band’s style is a mix of jazz and funk, with each of its four members contributing equally to bring about an unprecedented wall of sound. Being predominantly instrumental, the band’s incredible talent and versatility allows them to go from opening for the Allman Brothers to playing high scale jazz venues while satisfying the most discriminating of tastes. The band released their first CD (self-titled) in 1995, ‘Farewell to the Sun’ in 1997 and ‘In the Interest of Time’ in 1998. In 2000 the band signed with Flying Frog Records (owned and managed by members of the Allman Brothers). Under Flying Frog Records they released ‘Continent’ in 2000, and ‘Live at HoDown 2000’ the following year. Schleigho has met with great success over the years; from amassing a substantial and dedicated national following to ‘Continent’ breaking into the top 20 on CMJ and college Jazz radio charts. Averaging over 200 shows annually across the country, they have shared the stage with The Allman Brothers band, Bela Fleck, John Scofield, Karl Denson, Maceo Parker, Derek Trucks, G. Love and Special Sauce, Galactic, moe. and Soulive, to name a few. Schleigho has performed at the JVC Jazz festival (NYC), the Gathering of the Vibes, the High Sierra Music Festival, and the Berkshire Music Festival, among others, and are veterans of the club/college circuit and large festival scene for over 20 years. http://www.schleigho.com/ Shay and Tyres The Warlocks? Really the Grateful Dead. Nils Tyreserg? Really Taylor Swift. Death Ramps? Arctic Moneys. Bands perform under monikers for many reasons. Intimate venues, legal conflicts, fresh track showcase… there are many reasons a band conceals their name for the underground. Under cover. Under radar. We can’t say more than: Shay & Tyres … not who or what you’re expecting, and anything but cliché. Information Source: Colony Woodstock | eventbrite

Harvest Moon: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young FACEBOOK Harvest Moon was formed to pay tribute to the legendary career of Neil Young. Drawing on his time with Buffalo Springfield, Neil’s extensive solo career, CSN&Y and the electrifying albums with Crazy Horse, there is a lifetime of music to explore. Comprised of seasoned veterans of the Atlanta music scene, Harvest Moon was formed in 2018. The band was started by Rod Gunther on guitar and Henry Davis on keyboards, both of whom are members of TRIBUTE - a celebration of The Allman Brothers Band. Rod and Henry have been bringing the music of ABB to the southeast for over 6 years now and are excited to add this new project to the mix. Brad Berry, of Reuben’s Bell and a long time anchor of the Metalsome events, is on drums/vocals. Wade Carreker on bass/vocals and Meg Scalise on vocals bring their many years of performance and incredible talents to the band. On guitar and vocals is Grant Reynolds, a first-call Atlanta guitarist, vocalist, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist and on pedal steel guitar is Mark van Allen, a nationally acclaimed session and touring musician. Mark has appeared on hundreds of recordings and has toured with Sugarland, Jimmy Herring and many others, along with being a founding member of Blueground Undergrass. With 4 part vocal harmonies and an instinctive feel for the music and vibe of Neil Young, Harvest Moon brings these songs to life. Jim Lauderdale & The Game Changers THU April 17th, 2025 Doors 6pm | Show 7pm JIM LAUDERDALE & THE GAME CHANGERS At any given time, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It's a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I'm a developing artist,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys, released 34 full-length albums, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. Operating under his own label, Sky Crunch Records, for the first time since 2016, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There's a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and, at the same time, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that's part of life as well,” he says. “In the country song world especially, that's always been part of it. That’s real life.” Lauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley, Robert Hunter, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams and John Oates ,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day, and I know it always will.” ,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day, and I know it always will.” From rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer, songwriter, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. "Country music is constantly evolving, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster," he says. "I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on, or have it in their collection, and it would fit right in." Respecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn, Lauderdale’s collaborative spirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. "When everything works right, it's just magical to be able to hear them back," he says. "You feel, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes, like life makes sense.” Information Source: Colony Woodstock | eventbrite

SHYANNE - A Tribute to 80's Arena Rock FACEBOOK Nathan Smith - Vocals/guitar Nathan is the newest addition to the Shyanne family, and is creating quite a buzz!! Nathan is well known in the Atlanta music scene, and has recently played with RockForce, and with Your Girlfriend prior to that. Carl Brown - Keyboard player/ songwriter/ producer Carl was co-founder of the rock band Babe Blu that released an independent record in 1988 and wrote most of the material on the record. In 1991 he was working on the 2nd record that was co-produced by Steve Walsh and Phil Ehart of Kansas. After Babe Blu did not reach the level of success he had hoped for, he left to join Vic Valmus in Shyanne. Carl also has recently just finished up a summer tour with 38 Special and is working on a solo record project while playing in Shyanne. Kerry Denton - Drums Atlanta-based, professional drummer Kerry Denton enjoys his work and takes his business seriously. His exceptional abilities have taken him all over the United States and to dozens of countries in Europe. He toured and recorded with Mother’s Finest from 2003 to 2007. He has also played with Kansas’ bassist Billy Greer and the Seventh Key. During his 20 plus year career, he has done countless studio sessions and live performances. In addition to Shyanne, Kerry also currently plays with "Moses Mo (of Mothers Finest) and The Real Cool Band." Vic Valmus - Guitar Vic is originally from Pensacola FL and joined his first traveling band, Five Miles High (with Carl Brown), in the early 80s and relocated to the Atlanta area in the middle 80s to join The Heat. After The Heat, Vic formed Citizen Kane in the late 80s. In the early 90s, Vic joined with Angie Aparo in the Crush and mainly played the college circuit. After a couple of years in the Crush, Vic formed Shyanne. Shyanne performed shows throughout the Southeast opening for acts such as Foreigner, Damn Yankees, Little River Band, Foghat, Warrant, Ugly Kid Joe, Ronnie Montrose, and others. In the mid 90s, Vic won the 96 Rock guitar contest and got to jam with Joe Satriani at the Fox Theater. Shyanne parted ways in the mid 90s, and shortly after, Vic went on tour with .38 Special as one of the band’s 3-gun slingers. After .38 Special, Vic changed directions and decided to go to law school. After running into the keyboard player, Carl Brown, Shyanne reformed again in 2008/09 and currently has 3 of the original 4 members (Vic, Carl, and Kerry) minus Diamond Dave Wright. Mike Armstrong - Bass Mike grew up 90 miles north of New York City, and like many teenagers, was lured away from his school work by music. Class was often skipped (shhh, don’t tell Mom) in lieu of hanging out in a practice room at school playing Rush, Iron Maiden, and other bass-centric music . He spent the first part of his music career playing the tri-state area in various original bands, performing and recording material in genres ranging from progressive (think Kansas, Marillion, Asia), to metal (in the vein of Sevendust and Staind). He also functioned as a technical advisor in these projects, with colorful stories floating around about homemade smoke machines and pyrotechnics, but we’ll save those for another time… In 2005 he ended up in the Atlanta suburbs and, after dabbling with some original acts, settled on the North Atlanta cover circuit. Most notably in the recent past, he spent several years with Block Party in and around the metro area. After leaving Block Party in early 2017, he spent a majority of the year freelancing with various musicians, frequently providing last minute fill in work. Late in 2017, a handful of fill in gigs with Shyanne led to a permanent residency in the band. Fun fact: Shyanne is the FIRST band Mike has ever been in that he did not have to share his first name with another fellow band member. VENUE INFORMATION: All ticket holders are able to order food and drinks during the event. Standing Room Ticket holders generally place their orders with the venue bar staff.
