A Brief History of Human Stupidity | The Butterfly Club

Aug 11, 2025 (UTC+10)
Vic
Arts
Comedy
In the early 18th century Carl Linnaeus was the first to name us Homo Sapiens, literally meaning ‘wise human’. Given recent events, if he tried that now he’d be lucky not to get done for false advertising. Let’s face it, while we can occasionally be wise we can also be mind bogglingly stupid. From tulips that cost as much as a house, through atomic vacuum cleaners to planking or licking door knobs, or whatever other idiotic social media trend has emerged in 2025, stupidity has been one of humanity’s abiding and fundamental characteristics. Join stand up philosopher and comedic storyteller Stephen Sheely as he talks his way through a randomly selected bunch of stories about the human fondness for doing regrettable, inexplicable, and ridiculous stuff, in an attempt to unravel why we as a species do so many dumb things and what if anything we can do about it Disclaimer: The 10pm show on Friday 15th is Adults Only FAQs What time should I get there? At least 30 minutes before the show. Our performances start bang on time and it takes a hot second to welcome you into the building. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? The Butterfly Club is a licensed venue. Accordingly, patrons under 18 are only allowed on premises in the company of a parent or legal guardian. What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event? We strongly encourage using public transport. The Butterfly Club is a short stroll from Flinders Street station and Melbourne Central, and an even shorter stroll from any tram that travels through Swanston or Collins Streets (get off at Town Hall). How can I contact the venue with any questions? Please call The Butterfly Club on 03 9663 8107 or reply to your email confirmation. What's the refund policy? All sales are final: exceptions are made in extraordinary circumstances at the Club's sole discretion. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No. Our team have a record of all attendees updated in real time and will be able to let you in whether you bring a printed copy of your ticket or not. Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? Yes. It happens all the time. It's totally fine. Information Source: The Butterfly Club | eventbrite

This Czech band brings a unique and irreverent approach to grindcore and goregrind, blending humor and high energy into their distinctive sound. Behind the humor, Gutalax showcases impressive technical skill, with music that’s both fast-paced and masterfully chaotic, along with their frontman Martin Matoušek’s unique ‘pig-like’ vocals they set themselves apart from the grindcore scene. Their live performances are nothing short of unforgettable, filled with colorful costumes, absurd props, and relentless energy, making every show a wild escape from the ordinary. This mix of technical precision and boundary-pushing humor has gained them an international fan base that appreciates both the rebellion and the community that Gutalax inspires. Working Dog Training School (Trentham) | Trentham

Oct 7, 2025 (UTC+10)
Vic
Sports & Fitness
A skilled farm dog can accomplish complex tasks in minutes—tasks that would take a human hours. More than just a worker, they are loyal companions who genuinely enjoy their work. Plus, they are far more affordable to employ than human workers. Raising a great farm dog isn’t just about natural ability—it also requires proper training. That’s where Gary White and his internationally renowned Working Dog School come in. Since 1999, Gary has been traveling across Australia and around the world, holding clinics to share his expertise in working dogs with farmers. His work has taken him to the Americas, Europe, and Britain, and he’s always in high demand. Gary’s connection to working dog training runs deep. Born and raised in Nyngan, Gary grew up surrounded by dogs. His father established White’s Kelpie Stud nearly 60 years ago and was one of the founding members of the Working Kelpie Council. “Dad always managed properties and had working dogs to assist him. On the farms, he worked alone, and the dogs were like his right-hand men,” Gary explains. “When I was a kid, Nyngan was remote, with no television or other entertainment, so I spent all my time outside, and the farm dogs were my constant companions. I had a very outdoor childhood, and the dogs were integral to it. Much of what I know about working dogs, I learned from my father.” Gary’s early exposure to working dogs came when he was just a child. “I started working with dogs very young,” he recalls. “I loved helping my dad with cattle and sheep. He would leave me with the sheep, accompanied by one or two of his older trained dogs. Working with and training dogs is in my blood.” After building a local reputation for training dogs, Gary was invited to the US to lead specialised clinics. These clinics, typically held on farms, focus on helping dog owners work with their dogs' natural instincts. The first US clinics were so successful that Gary began receiving invitations to travel to other countries as well. “No matter where I am in the world, I train dogs the same way. The method doesn’t change. Even though dogs may be used differently abroad—like in the US, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, or Germany—the basics remain the same,” Gary says. “While they might not be working with the large numbers of livestock we manage in Australia, the core principles of training are universal.” Join Gary for this FULL DAY workshop: 9:00am - Arrival 9:30am - Welcome and Introduction 10:30am - Morning Tea (supplied) 11:00am - Practical Session 1 12:30pm - Lunch (supplied) 1:30pm - Practical Session 2 3:00pm - Afternoon Tea (supplied) 3:15pm - PracticalSession 3 4:30pm - Close This workshop will be open for up to 12 participants and their working dog, and as many spectators that are keen to come and watch on. More the merrier! The location of this event will be annouced closer to the workshop. Due to very limited spots being available, we request for your appreciation that there will be a waiting list - if your circumstances change and you're no longer able to attend, please contact Jai Edwards, j.edwards@hepburn.vic.gov.au, with as much notice as possible to allow us to fill the spot. The location of this workshop will be confirmed closer to the date. Give Water To Birds Album Launch | Creswick Event Location: Odessa Come join us for the album launch of Give Water To Birds in Creswick! The event will be held at the beautiful venue Odessa at Leaver's Hotel. A live performance of Give Water to Birds by ZÖJ is an intimate, immersive journey into the spaces between sound and silence. Expect music that feels alive—haunting, raw, and filled with the quiet intensity of something deeply personal yet universal. Gelareh Pour’s voice resonates like a memory, singing in Persian with a richness that transcends language. Her Kamancheh draws melodies that seem both timeless and fleeting, grounding the music in a sense of place while reaching for something far beyond. Brian O’Dwyer’s drumming flows with unpredictable energy—sometimes erupting, sometimes pulling back—each rhythm crafted with an instinctive precision that leaves room for the unexpected. Brett Langsford’s guitar like whispered conversations, filling the spaces with warmth and resonance, binding the music together in unspoken understanding. This is music that lingers in the air, holding its breath just long enough to draw you in. Each piece unfolds with a quiet urgency, blending improvisation with the delicacy of Persian poetry, inviting listeners into its meditative yet emotionally charged world. Themes of homesickness and longing ripple through every note, evoking the ache of leaving and the solace of returning. The audience can expect to feel both rooted and untethered, connected yet adrift in a soundscape that invites reflection as much as presence. It is not music of finality or resolution but of possibility—a quiet offering that speaks to the heart in a language beyond words, carrying the weight of what cannot be said but can only be felt. Give Water to Birds emerged from a moment that feels both accidental and inevitable, like discovering a rare and unexpected bloom in a landscape you thought you knew. ZÖJ—Gelareh Pour and Brian O’Dwyer—invite Brett Langsford, an artist they have long admired but never played with before, to join them, the trio gathered in uncharted musical terrain. The result is music imbued with the profound interplay of presence and absence, connection and distance. Seamless improvisation, where Gelareh’s haunting vocals and Persian kamancheh trace melodies that seem drawn from the earth itself, while Brian’s rhythms fracture and reform with an intuitive ferocity, and Brett’s guitar murmurs like a patient observer, steadying the spaces between. Together, their music creates a place outside time, where sound is a language beyond words, a vehicle for emotions that cannot be spoken but can only be felt. Alternative rock four piece Cardboard Cutouts are proud to announce their largest headline tour to date, in celebration of their debut full-length record, Politics and Footy Tips, out June Friday 27th. The Toowoomba band will land in Melbourne on the 25th of July, playing The Retreat Hotel. Cardboard Cutouts hail from regional Queensland and are formed by high school mates Eliot Argus (rhythm guitar and vocals) Campbell Patterson (lead guitar and vocals) and Rohan Parker (drums), with Sebastian Czaran (bass guitar and vocals) completing the outfit. The first single of the album, ‘My Best Friend’, earned airplay across Triple J Unearthed and community radio plus numerous praise from music media outlets across the country, with the release being capped off by the band's first headline interstate tour. Their second single, ‘Steer’ cements the bands ability to combine gutsy, emotive choruses with introspective, delicate moments - a songwriting trait that weaves its way throughout their forthcoming debut album. The live stage is where Cardboard Cutouts’ discography truly comes alive, and it's their exhilarating, community-building performances that have seen them grow from playing school events to sharing stages with the likes of Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Greta Stanley, Vera Blue, Concrete Surfers, and more. In 2023, the band embarked on a six-date headline tour of Queensland and northern New South Wales, playing packed out shows in intimate venues across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and Byron Bay. 18+ Supported by Grass Stains and Munroe Information Source: The Retreat Hotel | eventbrite
