M+, Asia’s first global contemporary visual museum, will host “Picasso: Dialogue with Asia”, showcasing more than 60 masterpieces created by Picasso between 1890 and 1970, as well as works from Asia and overseas in the M+ collection. Canton Modernpresents twentieth-century Cantonese art and visual culture in its full complexity as an important chapter in global modernism. United in a shared linguistic and cultural identity, the southern port cities of Guangzhou (also known as Canton) and Hong Kong were historically marginal in China. The birthplace of revolution, the two cities gave rise to a distinctive visual and artistic modernism, one shaped by cross-cultural interactions and tensions between conservative and progressive artworlds. Cantonese artists broke away from the elegant poetics of classical ink painting to forge a socially oriented realism, depicting subjects ranging from leisure and labour to war and disaster. Working as journalists and publishers, they exploited the immediacy and circulation of print, photography, and cartoons to intervene in and even reform society.

The world first Ryoko Kui Exhibition will feature over 150 pieces of exhibits, apart from manuscript copies, never-before-seen videos of the process of illustration to in-person interviews, offering a better insight into the artist’s creative thoughts and inspirations. Exploring the imaginary scenery of “Delicious in Dungeon” in person “Delicious in Dungeon” is Ryoko Kui’s first long-running manga series, telling the story of the protagonist and his companions venturing back into a labyrinth to rescue his sister who was eaten by a red dragon. The series captivates readers with its detailed dungeon settings and unique plot centred around cooking meals from monsters. To celebrate the big success on the anime adaptation, an exhibition was toured around different part of Japan earlier. This time the exhibition will also bring the labyrinth from the series to life in Hong Kong, allowing fans to fully immerse themselves in exploring various fantastical monsters. Hong Kong exclusive photo-spots, pop-up store and themed café Filled with intricate decorations , the exhibition will bring the visitors in the labyrinth world through photo spots, including the red dragon, life-size standees of characters and unique themed backdrops to elevate the experience. Visitors can take a look at the original appearance of his former creative space outside the glass room, explore Chen's creative world with another visual experience, and gain a deeper understanding of the multiple aspects of this local artist. "Chen Fushan Studio" also leads the audience to review Chen's artistic journey and style development by displaying historical photos and text records about Chen's life, and wander in the story that created the legendary life of the "Watercolor King". "The Purple Hairpin" was grandly performed in 2010 in Hong Kong, Foshan, and Guangzhou. This production was a cultural and artistic exchange work meticulously crafted by teams from five cities: Hong Kong, Foshan, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. At the time, the show underwent a forward-thinking reform, making it highly striking and leading the aesthetic trends of contemporary art while keeping pace with the times. In terms of design, the traditional four-hour script of "The Purple Hairpin" was condensed into two and a half hours, with experts from the five cities collaborating on the music, set design, lighting, and costumes. The stage design was inspired by an exquisite "gift box", presenting this Refined production as a grand offering to the audience. An innovative concept was adopted, using a long silk satin cloth for rapid scene changes, and through a unique fusion of light and shadow, it created a sense of separation between humanity and space. This approach elegantly showcased the love story of Li Yi and Huo Xiaoyu in a fresh and novel way. The production created a distinctive visual effect, breaking away from traditional performance models. With graceful sleeve movements and elegant music, these design arrangements aimed to provide the audience with an unforgettable viewing experience.

Yeung’s installations explore the relationships between human and aquatic ecosystems and comment on the emotional disconnections and power dynamics of contemporary society. Restaged in a museum setting, the exhibition shifts focus to discuss larger environmental and systemic issues. This response exhibition is part of the sixth collaboration between M+ and Hong Kong Arts Development Council on Hong Kong’s presentation during the Biennale.

An “environment” is an artwork that is actively participated in by the viewer. As the viewer moves through or around an environment, they are stimulated by objects, light, moving images, and sounds. Environmental art has been a major branch of art around the world since the mid-twentieth century, laying the foundation for today’s popular immersive experiences. However, the important history of this art form is not well understood, as most pioneering environments have been dismantled after being exhibited, and the art world has until now focused almost exclusively on male artists.

The title of After Snowfall comes from the famous letters to his friends by Wang Xizhi, the Sage of Calligraphy.
