Richard Carter's artistic journey began in 1971 when he arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley from New Jersey. As a self-taught painter, he honed his skills while working as a studio assistant to the esteemed Herbert Bayer in his Red Mountain studio from 1972 to 1978. During this time, Carter explored various artistic mediums, including sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, and environmental works. He even contributed to the transformation of the Holy Cross Power House into the renowned Aspen Center for Visual Arts, which later evolved into the Aspen Art Museum, alongside two other Aspen artists.
