Drawn from Sheffield’s collections, this recently refreshed display explores artists’ enduring fascination with depicting people.Portraits are complex. They have power and go far beyond a record of someone’s physical appearance – they offer insights into a sitter’s identity and status, as well as revealing the power dynamic between sitter and artist. They can flatter their subject, be grounded in the reality of the lives of the people they show, or be reminders of our own mortality. The advent of photography further changed the nature of portraiture - not only through its speed and accuracy, but in being a cheaper medium, allowing greater representation of the working classes and everyday society.

Over 75 years ago, the HMT Empire Windrush brought people seeking new opportunities from the Caribbean to fill post-war labour shortages in the UK. These passengers, and other arrivals between 1948 and 1971, helped forge Britain’s future. This new exhibition celebrates the many ways that people of African Caribbean heritage have contributed to Sheffield life. Shaped by community co-curators, displays share inspiring stories of journeys, culture and heritage, from church, sport and carnival to fighting racism and discrimination.

The Guild of St George’s Ruskin Collection celebrates the visionary ideas of the Victorian artist and writer, John Ruskin (1819-1900). The gallery looks at how Ruskin established his collection in Sheffield to help people find inspiration in art and nature, and explores the relevance of his ideas today.

Discover how artists have experimented with colour and form, with displays including work by Joseph Cutts, Naum Gabo, Tess Jaray and Bridget Riley.The works in this gallery can loosely be described as abstract, where focus is on colour, form and line rather than realistic depictions of the world. Abstraction became the dominant artistic practice during the early 20th century and has remained an enduring aesthetic ever since.

Curated by artist Yuen Fong Ling, We are the Monument explores the ways in which the plinth can be seen as a social, political and cultural symbol and encourages us to consider the significance of those representedon, or in opposition to, the plinth.

This new exhibition, curated by artist Kedisha Coakley, brings together artworks, objects and specimens from Sheffield’s collection to explore the relationship between Empire and the trade in fruit and flowers.
