Rehearsals for Dying: Ariel Gore at Womb House Books | Womb House Books
Apr 11, 2025 (UTC-8)
Oakland
Join us for a conversation on Ariel Gore's new book, Rehearsals for Dying: Digressions on Love and Cancer at Womb House Books. Ariel will be in conversation with Jessica Ferri, owner of Womb House Books, followed by Q&A and book signing. Pre-order your signed copy of Rehearsals for Dying An expansive, darkly funny, and deeply personal reflection on the reality of living with—and dying from—metastatic breast cancer. Deena stepped out of the shower and opened her towel in the steam. “Does my breast look weird?” These words irrevocably change the lives of writer Ariel Gore and her wife. As they descend into a world of doctors and tests, medications and insurance, sickness and treatments and hope and pain and more, they discover just how little they truly knew—despite the awareness campaigns and hyper-visible pink ribbons—about the reality of breast cancer. Over the four years following Deena’s terminal diagnosis, Gore does what she always does, no matter how difficult or personal the subject: she writes about it. With keen insights, empathy, and humor, Ariel Gore braids together the story of Deena’s experience, her own role as a caretaker, narratives from others living with breast cancer, literary reflections on illness, and reportage on the history of breast cancer and the $200 billion industry that capitalizes on and profits from breast cancer screenings and treatments. Rehearsals for Dying investigates and challenges everything we think we know about breast cancer. It goes beyond awareness to knowledge, presenting a rich, nuanced, heartbreaking, and hopeful portrait of what it is to be diagnosed with, treat, and live with breast cancer in the twenty-first century. Ariel Gore makes books, zines, coloring books, and tarot cards. She is the founding editor and publisher of the Alternative Press Award–winning magazine Hip Mama and the author of ten books of fiction and nonfiction, including Hexing the Patriarchy, We Were Witches, and The End of Eve. Womb House Books is an inclusive feminist bookshop located in Oakland's Temescal Alley.

Reframing Todd Haynes: Feminism's Indelible Mark with Theresa L. Geller | Womb House Books
Apr 13, 2025 (UTC-8)
Oakland
Join us as we delve into Todd Haynes' films through a feminist lens with Theresa L. Geller, editor of Reframing Todd Haynes: Feminism's Indelible Mark at Womb House Books. Theresa will be in conversation on the films of Todd Haynes in celebration of his retrospective at BAMPFA. Purchase your copy of Reframing Todd Haynes: Feminism's Indelible Mark For three decades, award-winning independent filmmaker Todd Haynes, who emerged in the early 1990s as a foundational figure in New Queer Cinema, has gained critical recognition for his outsider perspective. Today, Haynes is widely known for bringing women’s stories to the screen. Analyzing Haynes’s films including Safe (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Far from Heaven (2002), and Carol (2015), as well as his unauthorized Karen Carpenter biopic, Superstar (1987), and the television miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011), the contributors to Reframing Todd Haynes reassess his work in light of his long-standing feminist commitments and his exceptional career as a director of women’s films. They present multiple perspectives on Haynes’s film and television work and on his role as an artist-activist who draws on academic theorizations of gender and cinema. The volume illustrates the influence of feminist theory on Haynes’s aesthetic vision, most evident in his persistent interest in the political and formal possibilities afforded by the genre of the woman’s film. The contributors contend that no consideration of Haynes’s work can afford to ignore the crucial place of feminism within it. Theresa L. Geller is the author of The X-Files (Wayne State UP, 2016) and editor of Reframing Todd Haynes: Feminism’s Indelible Mark (Duke UP, 2022). She teaches film and television studies at San Francisco State University. Dr. Geller was recently a Scholar-in-Residence with the Beatrice Bain Research Group at UC Berkeley and a Mellon Fellow at Yale University. Before relocating to the Bay Area, Dr. Geller served as Associate Professor of Film Theory and History at Grinnell College. Her scholarship has appeared in American Quarterly, Camera Obscura, Rhizomes, The Velvet Light Trap, Biography, and Senses of Cinema. She has also contributed essays to volumes such as The Anthem Handbook of Screen Theory, East Asian Cinemas, Documenting the Visual Arts, Lady Gaga and Popular Music, Gender After Lyotard, and There She Goes: Feminist Filmmaking and Beyond.

Kate Folk: Sky Daddy in conversation at Womb House Books | Womb House Books
May 3, 2025 (UTC-8)
Oakland
Please join us for a celebration of Kate Folk's debut novel, Sky Daddy, at Womb House Books. Kate will be in conversation with WHB's owner, Jessica Ferri, followed by Q&A and signing. Linda is doing her best to lead a life that would appear normal to the casual observer. Weekdays, she earns $20 an hour moderating comments for a video-sharing platform, then rides the bus home to the windowless garage she rents on the outskirts of San Francisco. But on the last Friday of each month, she indulges her true passion, taking BART to SFO for a round-trip flight to a regional hub. The destination is irrelevant, because each trip means a new date with a handsome stranger—a stranger whose intelligent windscreens, sleek fuselages, and powerful engines make Linda feel a way that no human ever could. . . . Linda knows that she can’t tell anyone she’s sexually obsessed with planes. Nor can she reveal her belief that it’s her destiny to “marry” one of her suitors by dying in a plane crash, a catastrophic event that would unite her with her soulmate plane for eternity. But when an opportunity arises to hasten her dream of eternal partnership, and the carefully balanced elements of her life begin to spin out of control, she must choose between maintaining the trappings of normalcy and launching herself headlong toward the love she’s always dreamed of.
Both subversive and unexpectedly heartwarming, Sky Daddy hijacks the classic love story, exploring desire, fate, and the longing to be accepted for who we truly are. Pre-order your copy of Sky Daddy Order your copy of Out There Kate Folk is the author of the short story collection Out There, a finalist for the California Book Award in First Fiction.
