SCRIPT IN HAND how it works Each month writers have their scripts assigned to capable directors who cast experienced actors to rehearse scripts, then present on stage with props, costumes, sound and lights in front of an audience, each half followed by a Q&A. Lots of networking opportunities during interval. This months program is in Script In Hand Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/aasih Writers please email your script to SIH programmers Ron Hadley and Ruth Fingret: scriptinhand@live.com and join Facebook pages. Actors & Directors email bio to Stephen Carnell: info@deadhouse.com.au and join Script In Hand Facebook pages. HISTORY OF ACTORS ANONYMOUS INC (AAI) Actors Anonymous Incorporated (AAI) was established in 2011 as a not-for-profit network of actors, directors, writers and producers, who create, perform and produce independent theatre, radio, TV and film in Sydney. AAI has several thousand members. Script in Hand accepts scripts of any genre from writers and programs them into Script in Hand. Scripts up to 20 minutes are selected to form a 90-100 minute program. Script In Hand enables the writer to see their work staged close to a full production. Our monthly guest MC runs Q&A so the writer and all involved in the staging can get feedback from the audience (mostly theatre people). Average audience is 40-50 people. By attending the rehearsals and the show the writer is able to participate in the development of their script for stage. Many have gone onto full production after this development process. There is no charge to the writer for this process. Everyone pays $25 full/$20 concession for everyone, actors, directors, writers, MC, Actors Anonymous membership included. admissions to Script In Hand; these funds cover venue hire, insurance and our sound and lighting operator. The writer submits scripts to: scriptinhand@live.com Programs are created by Ruth Fingret (writer-director) & Ron Hadley (performer-director). Other committee members are: Stephen Carnell (Producer-Director), Nita Wolf (Writer/Producer/Director), Liviu Monsted (Writer-Producer-Director/Actor), Gareth Cruikshank (Writer-Producer-Director/Actor), Sally Williams (Actor), and Ursula Dauenhauer (Actor), who share the responsibility of recruiting producers, directors, assigning the scripts and running the shows. Mehran Mortezaei (Technical Manager) manages sound and lights. SCRIPT IN HAND – directors role. Welcome to directing at Script In Hand. Director guide is posted on Script In Hand Facebook group. Please read carefully. Also read outline above on how SIH works. Your next step is to find a cast for your chosen play. Go to actors you know, post a call on SIH & AAI on Facebook or ask me or other AAI members. Please advise me when actors are cast so I can add to the program. Then you need to arrange a rehearsal. You must include the writer. You can do this at home, in a cast member or writers home, in an accessible venue or online (Zoom etc). Live is preferred. Then prepare your tech script, so you can brief SIH Tech Manager Mehran during your 15 minute stage run prior to the show. All your sound and lighting cues must be clearly shown on tech script (ask for an example if your need one). Please do use a range of sound and lighting cues, including intro and outro music, as these greatly enhance the production and fulfils SIH’s goal of taking page to stage as close as possible to final production (except script is still in hand). Sound and music must be on a USB in track order. Also organize costume and props. In week prior to show I’ll advise your 15 minute pre show stage run time, between 6pm and 7.30pm. Use this time to brief Mehran on your tech script, source your stage furniture, work out how to set up and bump out quickly plus familiarize yourselves with the stage and backstage areas. You won’t have time to run the play. You can do this at the back of the foyer pre show. All participants pay $20 entry fee, Actors Anonymous membership included. This covers hire, insurance and accounting fees. If not booked, exact cash paid at the door prior to the show. David Smiedt – Described by Adam Hills, host of “Spicks and Specks” as “a living breathing joke machine” And described by Comedy Legend Joan Rivers whom David Supported on Her Australian Tour as ”So very, very funny” - Joan Rivers A regular on television shows David is the author of seven humorous books and writes for a wide range of over 30 magazines including, Virgin Airline Mag, Elle, Home Beautiful, Cleo, Men's Health, Women's Health, Body & Soul, Sunday Style and Vogue where he specialises in a humorous take on style health trends and celebrity profiles. Aside from being the current grooming editor for GQ magazine he is the only journalist in Australian publishing history to be in concurrent issues of lads-mag Ralph and Your Garden. Topical and charming, David’s comedy will entertain and uplift. His affability and easy charm coupled with sharp wit and fearless crowd work have made Smiedt the comedian of choice for rooms of all sizes from the Comedy Store to myriad pubs, and corporate functions.” – Chris Hook - The Daily Telegraph 2015 “A comic whom your mother would love.” – Helen Razer, the Melbourne Age “Stylish and funny” – The Sunday “Refreshing, sincere and engaging.” – Rip It Up “Think Dorothy Parker meets Graham Kennedy.” – TalkFringe “Disarmingly charming” – The Adelaide Advertiser. “He captured the entire audience in the first five minutes of the show and had them eating out of his hands.” – Funny Tonne, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival “Make an appointment to meet David Smiedt. If the post-show buzz is anything to go by, a lot more people are going to want to meet him.” –The Pun. “Sharp dressed, sharp minded and very affable.” – DB Magazine “A name to remember.” – Comedy Beast magazine “The energetic Smiedt as MC does a fine line in disarming self-deprecation, charming the audience with amusing trivia then slipping in neat puns and barbed twists.” – Gaggingforit.com.au “So very, very funny” - Joan Rivers (US Comedy Legend, David supported on her Australian theatre tour) Tommy Dean – If you have never seen Tommy Dean you are genuinely missing out on a master of the language of comedy. Known as the “Good Will Hunting” of comedy, he seems to see life as an enormous equation in front of him and solves it in an instant – with a mind bending laugh. With the unique edge of being an American who understands Australia, you would no doubt have seen this guy on countless TV shows. Tommy’s impressive media appearance CV includes Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Stand Up Australia, Rove Live, Joker Poker, Sunrise, The Today Show and The Sideshow. He can also be heard regularly on ABC 702 radio – Thank God It’s Friday Tommy’s astute, clean, observational comedic style consistently make him a stand out winner with theatre audiences, corporate clients, festival, TV and radio producers alike. With pin sharp banter, genial manner and a vast stock of broad appeal hilarious routines interweaving the foibles of his adopted home country with the dark reality of his native America, Tommy never fails to connect with and impress any audience. If you haven’t heard this big American with the rock-god hair and booming deep voice, he is one not to be missed. Funny to his bones; Tommy is a true comedy genius. “Smarts, skill and wit” - The Age “A consummate master of timing” - Australian Stage “Tommy Dean is awesome” - Foxtel Fiona Cox - Like a modern-day light-bulb, Fiona’s comedy can be described as energy-saving. She doesn’t use much power to deliver her punchlines, but they hit hard. Her delivery is slower than Australian internet speeds, but her jokes never fail. Fiona has performed comedy all over Sydney for 5 years, which is longer than a Hollywood marriage but shorter than the movie Titanic. After spending a decade writing ads for some of the biggest brands in the world, Fiona decided to stop writing jingles for cheeseburgers, face creams and fast cars and instead write jokes about coffins and the c-word. While she’s left the ad world behind, she’s probably encountered more mad men in comedy than she ever did in advertising. Fiona got into comedy because she’s a middle child and is desperately seeking attention. She’s also barely 5-foot, so she enjoys the thrill of standing on stage and looking at the tops of people’s heads for a change. Fiona’s shared the stage with some of Australia’s top comedians, but she still thinks that the best comedians in the world are cats. She one day hopes to master their hilarious combination of evil overlord and cute companion. John Cruckshank - John Cruckshank is making huge waves on the national comedy circuit with his clever, sharp and well paced jokes. His laid back approach sucks you in and is followed up by repeated roundhouse kicks banging out the laughs. His unassuming presence and brutal honesty make for continuous laughs. Over the last few years John Cruckshank has established himself as a polished, highly sought after headliner. He has a truly distinct and irreverent voice which clicks universally with all audience members. His is a rare comedic talent. “Spectacularly Funny” – Herald Sun “The delivery, warts and all, is spectacularly funny. His unassuming presence and brutal honesty make for continuous laughs, all of which he will thank you for” - Herald Sun Steph Broadbridge – 2022 Best Newcomer Nominee Melbourne international comedy festival and creator of Breaking the Musical. Steph is a regular host and headliner at all the Sydney comedy clubs, having performed alongside Ronny Chieng, Jimeoin, Dave Hughes and Arj Barker. She has performed at Splendour in the Grass as well as Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals and the Sydney Fringe Festival. 'A juggernaut of a show and, if justice prevails, a vehicle to a deserved breakthrough.' ArtsHub 'She broke someone with laughter.' Hugging Comedians 'Easily the stand-out performance of the night with her sharp, mischievous and unpredictable humour and perfect comic timing.' Weekend Notes
