Born in Malayer, Iran in 1959, Roostaei's artistic path took shape at Tehran's Academy of Fine Arts, until the Islamic Revolution disrupted creative life in Iran. Roostaei, a pacifist opposed to the new regime, turned to graffiti as a way to express his dissent. Unfortunately, his anti-regime activities led to a harsh two-year imprisonment under oppressive conditions. Following his release in 1984, Roostaei sought asylum in Germany, ultimately settling in Hamburg, where he found inspiration in the neo-expressionist movement prevalent in German art at the time. Roostaei's own artistic style emerged, blending gestural and depictive techniques. In a bold move, he abandoned traditional brushes in 1986 and began painting with his fingers, a technique that defined his career. Roostaei coined the term "Cryptorealism" in 1990 to describe his artistic approach, highlighting the layered imagery and hidden meaning in his vibrant works. His compositions range from mythical to everyday themes, inviting active participation from the observer to uncover the concealed forms beneath the vivid layers of paint. After a successful artistic journey in Germany, Roostaei settled in Los Angeles in 2000, seeking spiritual and perceptual freedom. Recognized for his exceptional talent, Roostaei gained prominence in the artistic and social circles of California. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced him and his enthusiasts to seek new ways to connect with their audience.
