Kick off the celebration of Holi, the Festival of Colors, with an untimed fun run or walk through clouds of bright powder that ensure you walk away a visible representation of our beautiful community, spring, and joy! Begin the celebration of Holi with a 1-mile run or walk around Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods and through clouds of colorful powders! Holi is a spring festival during which participants celebrate by throwing colored powder at each other while they dance and celebrate. After the run/walk, head over to the Chrysalis stage to continue the colorful celebration with free community performances and a dance party! Colored powder is available for sale onsite. Please note that while powder generally washes out of clothing, it is likely that by coming onsite you will have powder fall on you, so please wear clothing that you agree may be stained . The mission of the Inner Arbor Trust is to promote and nurture a park in a unique natural setting for a variety of arts and culture experiences that enrich the entire community. Learn about the rich diversity of birds which live in or pass through our tiny state of Maryland, the many anthropogenic dangers they face, and simple actions that ordinary citizens can take to help our feathered friends remain safe and thrive, even in an increasingly developed world. Brian Rollfinke became interested in birds as a child, thanks to a local college professor, who invited him to observe, then eventually help, for several seasons at a small bird-banding operation in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. Brian went on to earn a B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest University, then a M.S. in Ecology, with a focus on forest songbirds, from Penn State. His career in environmental science was put on hold for a brief 31 years, during which he taught math and coached baseball at a Baltimore independent school, got married, and raised two sons, who share his passion for orioles (both those found in sycamores and in the dugout.) Various ‘citizen science’ projects occupied whatever free time Brian had during those busy decades. Upon becoming an empty nester, Brian returned to his first passion, working as Director of Education at Irvine Nature Center for 3½ years and now as Director of Education & Outreach at Wild Birds Unlimited. Conceived on the Isle of Capri in Italy, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland. When he was 5 years old, Slim Man saw a movie with his dad. That film was The Five Pennies, and when Slim Boy saw Louis Armstrong play the trumpet and sing, he told his Dad, ”That’s what I want to do.” Slim Man studied trumpet for the next 9 years, and taught himself how to play piano and guitar. After studying piano, composition, and harmony at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, MD, Slim Man got signed as a songwriter to Motown Records. He’s had songs recorded by the Temptations, Angela Bofill, Carl Anderson, and others. Slim Man recorded a CD for Motown, which gave birth to his signature style–a unique blend of jazz, soul, and pop. Slim Man went on to form the band BootCamp, who had two of the first 100 videos ever played on MTV. Those videos catapulted BootCamp into a successful concert career, performing with The B-52s, Squeeze, Split Enz, Johnny Winter, and others. After BootCamp broke up, Slim Man organized and hosted a nationwide country music talent contest. It was during this contest that he got the nickname Slim Man. Slim’s big discovery during the contest was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at a honky-tonk called Tulsa City Limits. The guy who won the contest that night was Ronnie Dunn, who went on to win the national finals in Nashville, and later hooked up with Kix Brooks to form the multiple Grammy award-winning country music duo, Brooks and Dunn.
