Learn about the rich diversity of birds which live in or pass through our tiny state of Maryland, the many anthropogenic dangers they face, and simple actions that ordinary citizens can take to help our feathered friends remain safe and thrive, even in an increasingly developed world. Brian Rollfinke became interested in birds as a child, thanks to a local college professor, who invited him to observe, then eventually help, for several seasons at a small bird-banding operation in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. Brian went on to earn a B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest University, then a M.S. in Ecology, with a focus on forest songbirds, from Penn State. His career in environmental science was put on hold for a brief 31 years, during which he taught math and coached baseball at a Baltimore independent school, got married, and raised two sons, who share his passion for orioles (both those found in sycamores and in the dugout.) Various ‘citizen science’ projects occupied whatever free time Brian had during those busy decades. Upon becoming an empty nester, Brian returned to his first passion, working as Director of Education at Irvine Nature Center for 3½ years and now as Director of Education & Outreach at Wild Birds Unlimited. Kick off the celebration of Holi, the Festival of Colors, with an untimed fun run or walk through clouds of bright powder that ensure you walk away a visible representation of our beautiful community, spring, and joy! Begin the celebration of Holi with a 1-mile run or walk around Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods and through clouds of colorful powders! Holi is a spring festival during which participants celebrate by throwing colored powder at each other while they dance and celebrate. After the run/walk, head over to the Chrysalis stage to continue the colorful celebration with free community performances and a dance party! Colored powder is available for sale onsite. No outside powder may be brought onsite. Please note that while powder generally washes out of clothing, it is likely that by coming onsite you will have powder fall on you, so please wear clothing that you agree may be stained . About the Inner Arbor Trust The Trust is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in Maryland. The mission of the Inner Arbor Trust is to promote and nurture a park in a unique natural setting for a variety of arts and culture experiences that enrich the entire community. The Trust works to develop Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods into a destination arts and culture park. In addition to operating the Chrysalis amphitheater, the Trust manages a substantial portion of the Park for recreational use. What to Expect Onsite Seating All seating will be on the lawn.
