BREAKING GROUND | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
Oct 18, 2024–Sep 29, 2025 (UTC)
Oxford
Through the expansive finding of fossils and development of new techniques and methods, the 19th century transformed our understanding of the history of Earth. Breaking Ground explores these themes through William Buckland, geologist and palaeontologist, and Mary Buckland (née Morland), a scientific illustrator, the couple at the heart of this exhibition. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.

Katharina Volckmer & Nussaibah Younis in conversation with Naomi Frisby | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We are thrilled to be welcoming Katharina Volckmer and Nussaibah Younis to the shop for an evening of bold, outlandish fiction. Katharina and Nussaibah will be discussing their novels CALLS MAY BE RECORDED FOR TRAINING AND MONITORING PURPOSES and FUNDAMENTALLY in conversation with Naomi Frisby. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About the books: About CALLS MAY BE RECORDED: In a London call centre, Jimmie helps holiday makers with myriad problems, but he is hardly a model employee. He doesn't simply provide customer service to his clients and advice to his colleagues, he gets involved in their fantasies and frustrations, and now he's about to be hauled up in front of the boss. From perfecting his roles as an undertaker and as a clown to performing duties above and beyond his employment contract, he debates the importance of the optimum shade for lipstick and bathroom walls, the pros and cons of nudist versus textile, as well as the psychological impacts of an Italian mother and an emotional support animal. This is the second, ribald, scatological novel from the brilliant author of The Appointment. Jimmie's sly, sharp, melancholy insights into the indignities of a world which aims to eliminate the human will make you laugh, weep and never look the same way at an electric carving knife again. About FUNDAMENTALLY: Nadia is an academic who's been disowned by her puritanical mother and dumped by her lover, Rosy. She decides to make a getaway, accepting a UN job in Iraq. Tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women, Nadia becomes mired in the opaque world of international aid, surrounded by bumbling colleagues. Sara is a precocious and sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at just fifteen. Nadia is struck by how similar they are: both feisty and opinionated, from a Muslim background, with a shared love of Dairy Milk and rude pick-up lines. A powerful friendship forms between the two women, until a secret confession from Sara threatens everything Nadia has been working for. A bitingly original, wildly funny and razor-sharp exploration of love, family, religion and the decisions we make in pursuit of belonging, Fundamentally upends and explores a defining controversy of our age with heart, complexity and humour. About the authors: Katharina Volckmer was born in Germany in 1987. She now lives in London where she works for a literary agency. Her first novel The Appointment has been translated into over 15 languages and has been adapted for the stage and radio in several countries. This book is filled with brilliant dialogue, unexpected turns, some very dirty talk with sudden bursts of hilarity, and then fierce sadness. It exudes dark energy. It is highly original. It gives pleasure on every page. - Colm Tóibín, author of Brooklyn and Long Island Dr. Nussaibah Younisis a peace-building practitioner and a globally recognized expert on contemporary Iraq. She has a PhD in international affairs from Durham University in the UK and a BA in modern history and English from the University of Oxford. Dr. Younis was a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, where she directed the Future of Iraq Task Force and offered strategic advice to US government agencies on Iraq policy. Dr. Younis has published op-eds in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian, and has provided on-air commentary for the BBC and Al Jazeera. She was born in the United Kingdom to an Iraqi father and a Pakistani mother, and currently lives in London. Younis is a fantastic comic writer: caustic, pitiless, unafraid, with razor-sharp powers of observation. The book is laugh-out-loud funny, and many of the jokes, besides being hilarious, are jaw-dropping in their audacity. - Jonathan Coe Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either of the books. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Dan Hicks 'Every Monument Will Fall' Panel Discussion | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 7, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Every Monument Will Fall The culture war is over. If you want it to be. It wasn't even a culture war; it was a war on culture. A sustained attack, Dan Hicks argues, in the form of the weaponisation of civic museums, public art, and even universities - and one that has a deeper history than you might think.
Tracing the origins of contemporary conflicts over art, heritage, memory, and colonialism, Every Monument Will Fall joins the dots between the building of statues, the founding of academic disciplines like archaeology and anthropology, and the warehousing of stolen art and human skulls in museums - including the one in which he is a curator.
Part history, part biography, part excavation, the story runs from the Yorkshire wolds to the Crimean War, from southern Ireland to the frontline of the American Civil War, from the City of London to the University of Oxford - revealing enduring legacies of militarism, slavery, racism and white supremacy hardwired into the heart of our cultural institutions.
Every Monument Will Fall offers an urgent reappraisal of how we think about culture, and how to find hope, remembrance and reconciliation in the fragments of an unfinished violent past. Refusing to choose between pulling down every statue, or living in a past that we can never change, the book makes the case for allowing monuments to fall once in a while, even those that are hard to see as monuments, rebuilding a memory culture that is in step with our times. Dan Hicks Dan Hicks is Curator and Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford. His new book Every Monument Will Fall has been called by Professor Paul Gilroy as an extraordinary intervention — this bold, provocative book is an indispensable resource Panellists : Nandini Chatterjee (Professor of Indian History) Simukai Chigudu (Associate Professor of African Politics)

AN EVENING OF COSY CRIME: Marnie Riches in conversation with Jessica Bull | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We can't wait to welcome Marnie Riches to the shop to celebrate the publication of her latest cosy crime novel, THE GARDENER'S CLUB. Marnie will be in conversation with Jessica Bull, author of Miss Austen Investigates. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Gardening is dirty work - but should it be deadly? When Gill Swanley decides to take up gardening to fight a midlife malaise, she never expected it to become quite such a dangerous hobby. Pushing herself to 'get out there', Gill picks herself up the secateurs and joins the Bromley Botanists. Here she finds a seven-strong group whose main agenda is how to win the coveted Golden Trowel for best community club of the year. But when a dead body turns up in the community greenhouse, they suddenly have more serious matters to consider than victory. They must uncover whether their arch-rivals, Croydon, are taking things to another level or whether someone more dangerous is targeting their rag tag group. Can they dig up the truth before someone else is left pushing up the daisies? About the author: Marnie Riches grew up on a rough estate in north Manchester. Exchanging the spires of nearby Strangeways prison for those of Cambridge University, she gained a Masters in German & Dutch. Her best-selling, award-winning George McKenzie crime thrillers, tackling the subject of trans-national trafficking, were inspired by her own time spent in The Netherlands. About the host: Jessica Bull grew up in South East London, where she still lives with her husband, two daughters, and far too many pets. She’s addicted to stories and studied English Literature at Bristol University, and Information Science at City University, London. She began work as a librarian (under the false impression she could sit and read all day), before becoming a communications consultant. Her debut novel, Miss Austen Investigates, has sold in eighteen territories and counting. A Fortune Most Fatal is the highly-anticipated second book in the series. Videographic Entanglements: Audiovisual Practice Across Disciplines | Radcliffe Humanities
May 9, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
At a time of extraordinary challenges to the university as a social institution, we gather to discuss the role of video in sustaining our research practices and collaborations. What are the methods and techniques by which we activate video as a form of thought and knowledge? How do processes of video production, editing, and analysis structure research processes and support relationships between academia and communities outside the university? Does video still have critical, decolonial, or even revolutionary potential through its displacement of logocentrism and its capacity for entanglement? Can audiovisuality point the way to more embodied and emplaced ways of knowing and living? What happens to video in a digital world that is increasingly defined by algorithms and platformisation? What is the status of truth and fiction, the documentary and the ethnographic, in a time of rapidly growing “AI” image generation? Visiting Scholar Ben Spatz will introduce the Journal of Embodied Research, an open access journal from Open Library of Humanities that publishes video articles. Two roundtables will address the ethics, politics, and aesthetics of videographic entanglement today, with participants from contemporary art and from anthropology. IN PERSON: Ma uka to Ma kai - Quilting the Hawaiian Landscape | Pitt Rivers Museum
May 10, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Come and join us for our May event when we’ll be at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford discussing their Hawaiian exhibition: Ma uka to Ma kai - Quilting the Hawaiian Landscape. The exhibitiona is a fascinating exploration of traditional Hawaiian ecological knowledge. It looks at the collective beliefs expressed through mediums such as Hawaiian quilting and hula dancing, whilst also documenting how indigenous farming and fishing practices are currently being used to restore the landscape for the health of all its inhabitants — both human and more-than-human. We will meet in a special behind-the-scenes room at the museum from 2.15pm and the discussion will run from 2.30pm-3.30pm, and afterwards you will be more than welcome to join us for a cup of tea and further informal conversations. On the day we will go around the group and individually share our thoughts about the exhibition before we engage in a gently-guided group discussion. We are excited to say that the exhibition’s curator Dr Marenka Thompson-Odium will be with us at the museum to introduce the subject and to share some special exhibits with us. Please make sure to visit the Ma uka to Ma kai exhibition before you attend the discussion. It is free to visit and located in the Pitt Rivers special exhibition section. If you’re going to visit it on the day, it’s best to leave at least one hour in order to see everything, and it’s advisable to leave more time if you’d like to look at the rest of the exhibits in the world-renowned wider museum. Additionally, if you would like to gain a more embodied understanding of the hula tradition prior to our discussion, you can also book separately to attend a class at The London School of Hula and ‘Ori either in person or online: www.lsho.co.uk More about the Ma uka to Ma kai: Quilting the Hawaiian Landscape exhibition: “The ahupua‘a, a land division extending from the mountains to the sea, has long been the cornerstone of sustainable land management for Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian) communities. Ma uka (toward the mountains)and Ma kai (toward the sea) are not merely directional references; they signify a deep understanding of care and access to natural and cultural resources within these regions. Through a combination of contemporary and historic mea noʻeau (skillfully created works) this special exhibition explores the past, present, and future of the ahupua‘a system. Hawaiian quilts by the Honolulu-based Poakalani Quilters are curated in narrative that follows the ahupua‘a and the people working with the landscape, from mountain forests to the coastal waters, and as well as introducing the Hawaiian royal history of the palatial grounds of their group meeting place. Join us on a journey through time through the ahupua‘a in this special exhibition: witness the disruption of indigenous practices over the past 150 years, accompanied by a decline in Hawaiian ecosystems, alongside stories of resilience and restoration. Travelling from Ma uka to Ma kai, discover efforts of contemporary practitioners who embrace 21st-century sustainable stewardship, and how looking back towards traditional practices offers a glimpse into a future of abundance and harmony between communities and their environment.” Please see the full details of the exhibition here on the Pitt Rivers website: https://www.prm.ox.ac.uk/event/ma-uka-to-ma-kai More about The Book Club: The More-Than-Human Book Club is a series of ecology discussions that happen monthly both at The Barbican Library and elsewhere to talk about more-than-human experiences, wildness and nature writing in its broadest sense. Each month we choose a different exhibition, book, film, artwork, poem or essay to discuss, including a mix of classic and contemporary works. We hope the space will provide a place of sanctuary, exploration and discovery, and be a place where community and connections are forged and inspiration is found. If you are interested in nature, literature, wildness, ecology, science, art and/or ideas, please do join us. We would love to have you there! Its co-founders, hosts and curators are: Olivia “Lilly” Edward. Lilly is a writer who specialises in nature and the environment. After a career in journalism that took her around the world, she ran nature writing events and panel discussions at the Royal Geographical Society for a couple of years, and she continues to review and write regularly for their magazine. Alice Vincent HARK: HOW WOMEN LISTEN with Nell Frizzell | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Hark We're told women are good at listening, but we rarely examine what they're listening to, what their worlds sound like, or how it feels to be expected to listen in a world of noise made by men.
Like so many of us, Alice Vincent had become overwhelmed by the sensory overload punctuating our every moment. And then, a baby's heartbeat arrived. A rapid, pulsing whoosh of white noise. An undeniable rhythm. Once again, Alice's life became cacophonous - both with a new child, but also with the societal pressures that motherhood holds.
What followed was a personal quest to rediscover sound as something alive and vital and restorative. Beyond music, Alice's journey takes her into new corners of listening: from the phantom crying heard by mothers across the world to the nightingale's song and the crackle of the Aurora Borealis. As our attention spans shrink and our sense of disconnection grows, Alice wants to find out if sound - seeking it, trying to hold on to it, making space for it in her life - can reconnect her not only to lost parts of herself but to a life more consciously lived. Hark is a book for women who feel unheard and a means of listening more deeply in a world that has grown too loud. Alice Vincent Alice Vincent is a writer, broadcaster and multi-platform storyteller fascinated by the often-overlooked parts of life. Her books include the bestselling Why Women Grow: Stories of Soil, Sisterhood and Survival, which was shortlisted in the 2023 Books Are My Bag Readers Awards and Rootbound, Rewilding a Life. Both were longlisted for the Wainwright Prize. A career journalist, she was a writer and editor on the arts desk of The Telegraph before joining Penguin as an editor. Alice Vincent 'Hark: How Women Listen' | Blackwell's Bookshop
Now a columnist for The Guardian and Gardens Illustrated, Alice has offered readers her fresh approach to nature, gardening and life in the city as a columnist for The Telegraph and The New Statesman. She writes for titles including Vogue, The Financial Times, The Sunday Times and The Observer.

Voiced in Translation: How the real 'Nora' answered back | Seminar Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter
May 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
A workshop looking at the new translations of Ibsen’s plays A Doll’s House and When We Dead Awaken and Laura Kieler’s play Men of Honour, to be published by OUP in their Worlds Classics series in November 2025. Laura Kieler, the model for Nora in A Doll’s House, had a complex, ongoing interaction with Ibsen, conducted across several decades and, most intriguingly, through these three plays in which they speak to one another. With excerpts from the plays and other relevant texts voiced by professional actors, the workshop will look at Laura Kieler’s life, literary and sociopolitical works, her role in the provenance of Ibsen’s international fame, her response to his use of her ‘life’, here translated into English for the first time, and Ibsen’s subsequent justification of the (male) artist’s exploitation of lives and bodies. Context is all, and context makes for relevance. Laura Kieler’s voice is central to an understanding of Ibsen – and of her times and our times. The workshop will be led by the Kieler and Ibsen scholars Kirsten Shepherd and Tzen Sam, and by the translator Gaye Kynoch.
