Calgary
Cultural Experiences
May 1 – May 22 Time: 11am or 7pm Cost: $15 per class or $48 for the series (free for supporting members) 4-Week Series Embark on a transformative journey with our upcoming workshop, “Understanding the Mystery of Karma.” Delving into the heart of Buddhist philosophy, this workshop invites you to explore the profound concept of karma and its impact on our lives. When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often ask: Why me? But do we have an answer to that question? Do we feel unlucky? Do we feel that we’ve been dealt an unfair hand? Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma gives us a clear and practical explanation on why things happen the way they do, and how we can begin to change our experiences from not so great to fantastic. Or at the very least, better. Rather than seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Karma is the subtle force that weaves through every action, shaping our experiences and the path of our lives. Through engaging teachings and guided meditations, we will explore how karma affects our life. And, by unlocking the mystery of karma we can start our journey to become architects of our own destiny. This series welcomes everyone, regardless of their familiarity with Buddhist philosophy, offering practical insights into karma’s nature and transformative potential. So, join us and start shaping your destiny consciously! Information Source: Akshobya Kadampa Buddhist Centre | eventbrite

Whether you’re starting your business, growing your network, or simply tired of being misunderstood, this empowering event is for you. Join us for an inspiring and practical Thursday evening, hosted by Nectera Start & Grow, a division of Nectera Group created by Izabella Parjan to support women entrepreneurs. Our wonderful speaker is Shona Welsh , an expert in public speaking, this session is designed to help women in business sharpen their communication skills, set confident boundaries, and speak with clarity and purpose. Let’s learn, connect, and enjoy our evening, there will be light snacks courtesy of Nectera , and a bar available for those who wish to purchase drinks . What we’ll dive into: 1. Small Talk: We’ve all been there, stuck in the same surface-level conversations about the weather. But what if small talk could feel more natural and actually lead to real connection? Shona will guide us through simple ways to start conversations, connect with strangers, and make networking feel more human and less forced. 2. Clear Messages, No Misunderstandings: Have you ever said something with a specific intention… but it landed completely differently ? Or worse, the topic was delicate, and suddenly you’re in a hole trying to explain yourself, only making it messier. We’ll learn how to deliver our messages with clarity and confidence, and how to gracefully recover if we do fall into that hole. 3. Saying No with Confidence (and Without Guilt): Why does saying “no” feel so stressful sometimes? Like we have to justify, apologize, or soften it until it doesn’t even sound like a “no” anymore? This session will help you understand how to set boundaries without feeling rude, how to stop over-explaining, and how to trust that your “no” is enough, because your time, energy, and values matter. Who is this for? Women entrepreneurs, creatives, freelancers, or professionals who want to strengthen their communication skills, not just for business, but for life. If you’re ready to connect with more confidence, clarity, and authenticity, this evening is for you. Featuring some of the very best talent in the industry, both locally and internationally; Supper Club is an intimate dinner experience like no other. The evening features renowned chef Kyle Opel, owner of Love, Damian - the newest Italian pop-up in the heart of Downtown Calgary. Chef Opel has designed an exquisite four-course menu through the lens of top tier French cuisine training with simple and thoughtful ingredients inspired by Northern Italy. Pairings are procured through Charton Hobbs by Love, Damian Sommelier and co-owner Jason Exton. Please note: Modifications for allergies are possible. Please share your allergies or dietary restrictions before April 27th. Non-alcoholic pairings available. Please note your preferences at checkout. About Chef Kyle Opel. Chef Opel is a passionate and innovative chef with 13 years of experience in the culinary world. Throughout his culinary career he predominantly specialized in French cuisine, with a keen interest in gastronomic techniques and time spent training in Quebec, England and Western Canada. His firm belief that a powerful way to stay current in the culinary world is by revisiting traditional foods and infusing them with new life and creativity. Before opening his restaurant, Chef Opel served as the Chef de Cuisine at The Wilde on 27, where he had the privilege of working with Sommelier Jason Exton—an incredibly talented professional whose passion for wine is unmatched. Together, Jason and Kyle opened Love Damian in October 2024. About Love, Damian Restaurant: Named after his late father - Love, Damian is a pop-up restaurant concept that focuses on Northern Italy cuisine with a story. From Chef Opel: “My earliest memory of Italy is steeped in the charm of Bardi, a picturesque town nestled in the mountains of Nothern Italy in the Province of Parma. This enchanting place was my father’s favorite place on earth, and together we shared a deep love for its rich food and vibrant culture. Little did I know at the time, it was here that my passion for Italian cuisine truly began. We wandered the cobblestone streets, delighting in fresh gelato and pastries, savoring a quick coffee or a cheeky beer. We would explore local markets, captivated by the sight of giant wheels of parmesan, often sneaking a taste. Picking sun-ripened tomatoes straight from the vine, sipping homemade limoncello, and enjoying exquisite Italian red wines at dinner, I discovered the magic of fresh ingredients—simple yet profound. In sharing my family’s culinary heritage, I hope to honor my father’s memory and invite you to experience a taste of that love. The food and drink are an extension of our love as we invite you to dine as family.” In loving memory of Damian Gerard Opel." Charton Hobbs is the proud wine partner of Supper Club No. 7 For a century, Charton Hobbs has been cultivating the Canadian wine and spirits landscape. By partnering with international producers, leading retailers, and hospitality trade networks, we offer premium products and branded experiences to consumers across the country. About Sommelier Jason Exton Co-owner and Sommelier at Love Damian, Jason has spent what feels like a lifetime in restaurants, occasionally attempting a graceful exit, only to be lured back by the industry's chaotic charm. Originally from Leeds, UK, he’s called Calgary home for almost 12 years, during which time he's explored various parts of the wine industry. A brief foray in retail confirmed his talents lay elsewhere, and so he quickly moved back into restaurants. Later, and another attempt at a quieter life, Jason took a detour at a small wine import agency - Boutique Wines, where, to his surprise, business thrived (turns out, good wine kinda sells itself). Eventually though, the siren of the industry called him back, landing at The Wilde, where he met Chef Kyle Opel. It wasn’t long before he realised, with his calm demeanor, incredible skill and knowledge, and his all-round love for his craft, that this was a guy that he wanted to work with. " And so, here we are at Love Damian, making a little bit of history, one plate and pour at a time." About The Garret Loft: Nestled in the heart of downtown, The Garret Loft often feels like entering into a space out of another city. Gently tucked above the hustle of Calgary's historic Stephen Avenue, one might feel as though they've just ecountered one of the more impressive and rare lofts that the city has to offer. Likened to the akin of what you'd expect to see in New York, Chicago, London or Paris, the space heavily delivers on that element of charm, ruggedness and homelike character. Ticket prices include food & drink with additional beverage offerings made available to order. Lucette with Brock Geiger | Festival Hall

Presented by Calgary Folk Music Festival The 2014 debut Black is the Color from Lucette, the stage moniker of Edmonton-born Lauren Gillis, unveiled a clever songwriter steeped in rustic roots/Americana traditions…with a tinge of spacey indie pop. It caught the ears of Sturgill Simpson, who produced her sophomore release Deluxe Hotel Room. Lucette’s upcoming EP Nice Girl From the Suburbs (out March 21) was a collaborative creation over zoom with producer Soren Hansen (New Politics, Elle King, Sam Palladio). An intimately personal release, it expands Lucette’s musical repertoire with sonic inspirations from ‘90s dream pop and alt rock, pairing introspective lyrics with lush, anthemic production. It explores themes of lost love and self- awareness—often infused with self-deprecating humour—and the joy found in new love, with songs that reflect on being in a dark place plus the recognition that it’s kind of human to be your own worst enemy. May 2nd, 2025 Festival Hall Doors: 7:00 pm; Show: 8:00 pm All Ages / Licensed Advance tickets: $30 + fees and taxes This is a seated event. Seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
