The NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course is a ten-hour class that includes both classroom and range time. Its objective is to teach students how to shoot shotguns at moving clay targets. NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home provides the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family in the home, and to provide information on a law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. A student packet containing the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and a Winchester/ NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet will be provided. Major topics covered during this course provides knowledge and hands-on experience in the following areas: • Safe firearm handling • Selection of firearm & ammunition for home defense use • Defensive shooting fundamentals and the opportunity to practice live-fire exercises on the range • Legal aspects of use of firearms for defense & use of deadly force • Defensive shooting skills & drills Participants must be law abiding adults (at least 21 years old) and able to visually demonstrate mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing handgun sights, and cleaning the firearm. Students should bring a centerfire handgun appropriate for home defense, along with a suitable quantity of practice ammunition (200-250 rds. recommended), and adequate eye and ear protection. **NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home is an intermediate-level course, not well suited for individuals new to firearms or inexperienced in their safe handling and basic operation. Acceptable prerequisite proof of experience includes: • NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate • NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate • NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card • Military DD 214 with pistol qualification • Passing a Pre-Course Assessment (contact Instructor for details) Note: If inclement weather forces us to complete the shooting portion of the class at an indoor shooting facility, additional range charges will apply.
