Our next Arts on Site workshop draws inspiration from our stunning exhibition, Gentle Protagonist: Art of Michael McWilliams. Join artist Daria Andrews to give a second life to discarded timber. Inspired by Michael McWilliams' unique approach to painting on timber furniture, this workshop invites you to paint a piece of timber salvaged from the Gentle Protagonist exhibition itself. Michael McWilliams started painting on furniture and timber panels while working with his parents in their antique shop in Longford in the late 1980s. He would paint only on furniture and timber panels that couldn’t be saved by restoration. The timber tended to be Australian (red cedar, huon pine, blackwood) but he has also painted on a variety of English and European timber. In this workshop, you'll first explore the exhibition Gentle Protagonist: Art of Michael McWilliams, taking inspiration from the stunning range of artwork on display. Next. regroup in the Creativity Centre to explore the techniques to create your own artwork with Daria Andrews - from sanding and priming the wood to drawing and painting. Daria will inspire you with her passion for the environment and quirky techniques for creating a masterpiece. Be sure to register quickly for this workshop as spaces are limited. About the workshop This workshop is suitable for adults with some experience of drawing or painting who are curious about art.The registration fee includes all materials. The workshop's location is the Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Royal Park, 2 Wellington Street, Launceston.About the artistDaria Andrews is a painter who lives in Tasmania. Through her use of bold and vibrant colours, she explores the intricate complexities of disconnection and personal transformation in modern society. Daria has held eight solo exhibitions in Australia and Poland, and been part of six group shows. dariaandrews.com.au About the exhibitionGentle Protagonist: Art of Michael McWilliams QVMAG presents the first-ever public exhibition of the works of much-loved Tasmanian artist, Michael McWilliams. McWilliams is one of Australia’s most successful and widely recognized artists. His quirky and whimsical landscapes, depicting wildlife and domestic and introduced species in Tasmanian bushland, farmyards, gardens, and houses, have captivated audiences around Australia and internationally. His works project a great affection for his subjects and, while often humorous, also carry a darker observation on human impact on the environment. The exhibition is the first holistic survey of McWilliams’s art, exploring his life and career, his place in the canon of Australian and international art, and his empathy with the wildlife and natural environment of Tasmania. This is a must-see experience for all Tasmanians and anyone who loves the Tasmanian countryside. But be prepared to be watched.
