LUCY RAVEN: MURDERERS BAR | Vancouver Art Gallery

Apr 18–Sep 28, 2025 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
Exhibitions
Lucy Raven: Murderers Bar is the first major presentation of work by multidisciplinary artist Lucy Raven in Vancouver and the artist’s largest exhibition in Canada to date. Based in New York, Raven (b. 1977) works in installation, photography, video, drawing and sculpture to examine historic and contemporary representations and narratives of the American West. The exhibition takes its name from Raven’s newest work Murderers Bar (2025), the third installment in a series of moving-image installations and related works called The Drumfire. Co-commissioned by the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Vega Foundation, it features an ensemble of sculptural elements and a video, projected vertically on a tall, free-standing aluminum structure in the gallery space. Created between 2023 and 2025, the video centres around the recent removal of a century-old, concrete gravity dam along the Klamath River in Northern California—the biggest dam removal project in American history. The exhibition also presents previous and related works—including a selection from Raven’s series Depositions (2024) and Casters X-2 + X-3 (2021)—that provide further context to her practice and a broader appreciation of her ongoing investigations and visual language. The arc of these works reveals the intermingling of nature and technology; the frequent interrelation of military and entertainment applications; and the impact of these forces on lived experience. Together, the works in this exhibition provide a timely glimpse into the expanding field of Raven’s vision—the push and pull between human intervention and the more-than-human forces of nature and the physical world. The exhibition explores objectivity, subjectivity and perception, from individual and discrete elements of history, technology and the popular imagination to the broader sweep of geological and physical forces that define experience over millennia. This exhibition is part of the 2025 Capture Photography Festival Featured Exhibitions Program. Murderers Bar is co-commissioned and jointly acquired by the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Vega Foundation.

Written in Clay presents a history of ceramics made in British Columbia told through the collection of John David Lawrence. Featuring more than 300 objects, it examines the materials and processes artists utilized in relation to the context in which studio ceramics arose and developed in the region. The exhibition features three interconnected sections: influence and inspiration; form and function; and artist spotlights that highlight important figures whose work and legacies altered the direction of ceramic arts in BC. Celebrating 35 artists, Written in Clay establishes the mentors, interlocutors, societies and schools that made up a vast clay community in the region from the 1930s to the early 2000s. This exhibition will be accompanied by a publication.

In its exhibition design, Emily Carr: Navigating an Impenetrable Landscape draws out the question of the opening and closing-off of space in Carr’s landscapes by contrasting a densely hung group of paintings with sparsely hung later works that depict an open horizon. Ironically, many of the spatially open works are open precisely because they depict landscapes that had been recently subject to clear-cut logging. This exhibition uses the spatial metaphor of closeness to and distance from nature to probe Carr’s thinking about the forests she painted. It will also examine how Carr’s representation of some Indigenous subjects—particularly villages and totem poles set within landscapes—sit in relation to the dense forest and what this might suggest, given the late 19th- and early 20th-century tendency to conflate Indigenous cultures with nature.

Liars of Orpheu s is a kids show for adults where writers produce small lectures on strange topics. This month, writers will be creating fun biographical work on Gay Icons like Elton John and James Baldwin, Judith Butler and Laverne Cox. They win points from bootlegging their truths past their opponents or having their lies mistaken for truths. You can call it literary comedy or an excuse to eat chocolate outside of the house. You can say it’s a slapstick slam where the points don’t matter, if you wish. What you can never say is that its tepid or plain. This episode will celebrate Gay Icons and features Ashley Fehr , Catherine Lewis , GOLDBard and Spillious the Ridiculous One . Bios: Ashley Fehr (she/her) is a queer settler living on the unceded, ancestral lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. She is a community organizer, a politico, a lover and prefers cold orange juice with pulp. An accidental adult jock, she runs two queer sports leagues in Vancouver. When she's not on the field, Ashley is walking her dog, JoJo Geena Davis, and taking pictures of bees. Reading out in the wild for the first time since college, she's just happy to be here. Catherine Lewis (she/her) is a Chinese Canadian writer and poet who lives in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Her debut poetry chapbook Zipless is a finalist for two Bisexual Book Awards, including Bi Writer of the Year. Her poetry and prose have been featured in PRISM international, The Humber Literary Review, Pulp Literature, and Plenitude Magazine. First runner-up for Pulp Literature’s 2023 Magpie Award for Poetry, Catherine has been a finalist in creative nonfiction contests hosted by The Fiddlehead, Room Magazine, and The Humber Literary Review. She has performed at the Poets Corner Reading Series, Word Vancouver, and the Verses Festival of Words. A graduate of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University and of the Vancouver Manuscript Intensive, she is a Banff Centre Literary Arts alumna. Catch her on Twitter or Instagram at @cat_writes_604 or at www.catherinewriter.com. GOLDbard (they/them) is a queer blues songwriter, artist, poet and drag thing from the unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples in that moodiest of ports, Port Moody, BC. Their art centers Queer Joy as a spiritual practice, and their new single "Look Back" is an homage to all the Queer Creatives who paved the way for them to be a Professional Queerdo. They are indomitable in spirit with the voice of a wry angel. They love with abandon, command the stage, yet share the spotlight with love. A true entertainer with a voice full of soul, GOLDbard will make you laugh and cry, as they share songs and stories to remind us of our wholeness. “With little more than guitar, percussion, and a story, GOLDbard brings listeners into their world, encouraging them to find joy in the resistance of those that came before.” -V.S. Wells, The Georgia Straight Spillious the Ridiculous One aka Trevana Spilchen is a Trans feminine settler parent, musician, spoken word artist and educator of Ukrainian and Irish decent. We are the Oregon Brewery Running Series™, and we want to invite you to be active, have fun, and give back to local nonprofits! Join us at Loowit Brewing on 8/2/25 for a 5k-ish, fun run/walk event that starts and ends at this cidery in Vancouver! Run, walk, jog - whatever goes! Complete the course and celebrate with a local craft brew at the finish line. What’s included?! All participants receive: A FREE craft brew from Loowit Your choice of a collector’s pint glass or seasonal swag item from the Brewery Running Series Your chance to win sweet door prizes, like Brewery Running Series merchandise or a beer to take home Access to event festivities, games, goodies, and giveaways And more! Our mission is to be active, have fun, and give back to our local community. A portion of all proceeds supports local nonprofits. Nationally, we have raised over $400K to date! This event will add to that tally and support the efforts of Oregon Wild , Big Brothers/Big Sisters , Ronald McDonald House , and more. So not only do you get to enjoy some healthy activity and great local beer - but you are also helping us support local organizations that do important work in our community. Registration is limited, so sign up today! Important details: This is an untimed, fun run. All levels of walkers, runners, rollers, and strollers are welcome. This is an open course, meaning roads will NOT be closed. You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and regulations. We create each route to start and end at the brewery and to show off the surrounding neighborhood. The course will be marked with arrows and volunteers; we provide a digital map to help you know where to go. You must bring a valid ID or driver's license. You do not need to be 21 to enjoy the event, but you must be 21 to enjoy the beer. Please drink responsibly. Registered, underage participants will receive a token for a FREE non-alcoholic beverage. Our events are rain or shine! If conditions become unsafe to run, we will still hang out and drink beer. There will not be a bag check; please plan accordingly and dress appropriately for the weather. Dogs and strollers are welcome on the course with care and caution. Please remember - you are running at your own risk on city sidewalks/streets/trails, which might not be suitable for your 4-legged and /or pint-size running buddies. You will also want to check with the brewery to make sure you can abide by their dog / underage policies. Please make the best decision possible for your crew. Please drink responsibly. We always encourage carpooling and safe, designated drivers. Keep an eye out - we will email you all final event details the week of this event and share anything else you might need to know. The Oregon Brewery Running Series is happy to be back with another season of organizing 5K fun run/walk events at local breweries!
