To the world Mrs Copplefield is the epitome of Victorian propriety: an exemplary society lady who writes a weekly column advising young ladies on how to be better wives. Only Adeline has never been a good wife or mother; she has no claim to the Copplefield name, nor is she an English lady . . . Now a black woman, born in Africa, who dared to pretend to be something she was not, is on trial in the English courts with all of London society baying for her blood. And she is ready to tell her story . . . "When I set out to write this book, I knew I wanted to write about a Black women living in Victorian England. I was deliberate about relying less on the 'slave ' or 'maid' narrative and instead place the focus on a resilient, resourceful and wealthy Victorian woman who just happens to be Black. It was also important for me to highlight the contributions of women of African descent who have mostly been erased from history. Although ‘Temi’ is a fictional character, there are ‘guest stars’ in this novel like, Sarah Parker Remond the only known Black woman to sign the register for women's rights in 1866 and Alice Kinloch. Both these Black women have all made a difference at a time when women’s voices were muted." --- Author, Lola Jaye Free entry Cocktail bar, nibbles, and discussion! Tell a friend! Non League Networking hosts business networking events at local non league and grass roots football clubs around the UK. The aim is to bring together business owners and professionals to grow their network and build connections. Networking is a proven way of doing this. What makes us different is our mantra of "Support for all". We believe in supporting not just the growth of local businesses, but the football clubs too. Most of the money you pay to attend the events goes back into the football clubs and helps them financially. These clubs rely on events and sponsorships from local businesses to keep them going. So with our networking events you are helping the local communities! Our events are all very relaxed. We are not a membership organisation and we do not have any "rules" or single seat policy. All events are "pay as you go" so we are consistently welcoming new faces every month. Everyone is welcome from sole traders to large global businesses. The main thing we ask is that you are friendly and open to getting to build new relationships. We're confident that once you have tried Non League Networking you will be back for more! How Speed Dating Works in Birmingham When you arrive at the Birmingham venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening.
