In this class you will learn:
Foundational principles of design (triangulation, rule of thirds, scale and depth)
Basic color theory
Sustainable mechanics
Post harvest care and techniques for longer vase life
How to choose the appropriate vessel for your design
All fresh florals will be provided by Modern West Floral Co and each student is asked to bring their own vessel with an opening of 6" or less. Bringing multiple vessels is encouraged as we will learn the advantages and disadvantages of size and proportion.

Vanessa is owner of Modern West Floral Co. With a background in landscape architecture and design she moved to Colorado's western slope in 2012 to gain experience growing food and managing livestock. She spent 3 years at Sustainable Settings Ranch in Carbondale, 2 of which she managed the market garden and small CSA. She returned to her landscape architecture background and was brought on as a landscape designer at DHM Design. With a background in native plants of the western slope she wanted a way to showcase the beauty of the natural landscape and use her design background. In late 2015 she co-founded Modern West Floral Company. She lives on the flower farm in Silt with her husband and son. Modern West provides seasonal cut flowers to the Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado River Valley May-October.

Engage in creative expression and envision your ideal landscape
Whether you're new to landscaping or an experienced gardener, this will be an incredible journey of self-discovery and environmental stewardship. Honor the wisdom of the earth and awaken to the transformative power of living in your harmony with nature, right out your front door.
In this day-long workshop, we'll delve into the relationship between our inner selves and the external landscape, recognizing that our surroundings are an extension of our being. Guided by principles of good design, mindfulness, and ecological stewardship, we'll uncover the inherent wisdom of the earth and learn how to co-create with nature to manifest our ideal landscape.
Throughout the workshop, we will:

BAG keeps alive the professional, social, and educational relationships fostered over the years at SIU while aiding, guiding, and supporting current students, administrators, faculty, and staff. The group works to advance the institution by assisting with recruitment, retention, financial assistance, and career development.
BAG represents more than 12,000 black alumni who attended and graduated from SIU Carbondale. Everyone is invited to attend this year's event, network with fellow alumni, and learn how you can continue to support SIU.
Life members and those who paid BAG dues by January 31, 2025, are eligible for a $20 discount for one Single Registration or $30 off one Couple/Family Registration. Members will need their constituent ID number, located on their alumni hard or digital card. If you can't locate this number, you may contact the Association's main office at (618) 453-2408 during regular business hours, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. To access the discount for Couple/Family Registration, please contact Cathie Mieldezis, director of constituent relations, at cathiem@alumni.siu.edu.

About Day of The DeadDía De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a week long holiday that reunites the living and the dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed.These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored.The offerings encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!About This WorkshopCome create amazing ceramic sugar skulls with us!Together we are going to paint pre-made ceramic skulls.
