Day trip to Richmond, VAWith special guests: Dr. Sarah Kennel, the Aaron Siskind Curator of Photography at VMFA, and award-winning local Charlottesville artist Matthew Eich!Join us for Fralin Excursions | Through the Lens: Photography in Focus, an unforgettable day trip from Charlottesville to Richmond!
Enrich your understanding of the photographic medium and its cultural significance with a visit to two captivating exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts—A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845 and American, Born Hungary—followed by a special tour of Crystals of Silver: Susan Worsham at Candela Gallery, Richmond's only photography-dedicated contemporary art gallery.
VMFA’s Aaron Siskind Curator of Photography Dr. Sarah Kennel will personally lead our group on a tour of Long Arc, an exhibition tracing the South’s shifting identity in more than two hundred photographs made over more than 175 years. In American, Born Hungary, we'll marvel at the poetic street scenes, Hollywood portraits, fashion photos, and images of war produced by more than 30 Hungarian-born artists who transformed photography in the 20th-century. We'll also see Home/Grown: Photographs by Susan Worsham and Brian Palmer, curated by Dr. Kennel.
After catching a glimpse of Susan Worsham's work at VMFA, we'll do a deep dive into her photography practice in Crystals of Silver, Worsham's solo exhibition at Candela Gallery.
Charlottesville-based artist and VMFA Fellow Matthew Eich, will join us for the duration of this special Fralin Excursion. Through Eich, we will learn about how his most recent body of work ties to Holly Wright: Vanity on view at The Fralin, how the medium of photography captures the immediacy and nuance of modern life, and how to view photography through the eyes—and lens—of an artist.
