This session is to help those of you who haven't used watercolours before or don't feel confident, to practise laying down washes, experience wet in wet and wet on dry and so on, to work out how to keep colours clean, how to create rich shades and how to layer colours. We'll use some images for you to use as inspiration for a simple landscape, after we've practised the basics and you feel more confident. If you have your own watercolours and watercolour brushes do bring them along so you can learn to use them. The same goes for watercolour paper- if you have some you want to use, please bring it. Please let me know if you are planning on bringing your own materials so I know how much to provide! I will provide baords and tape for everyone whether or not you want to use your own materials. This is a relaxing and fun workshop and all about havinig a go and experimenting and not worrying too much about the final piece: you've got the rest of your life to play with watercolours. We think of them as starter paints but iin reality they can be very challenging and very exciting! So come along and start on your watercolour journey! As usual hot drinks and cake is included to keep up your energy levels! I look forward to seeing you there! Information Source: Catherine Jones | eventbrite

One Small Step - An Evening with Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt | The Holroyd Community Theatre

Apr 14, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED

Running
On your marks! Booka Bookshop, in collaboration with Adrenaline Sporting Events, are delighted to present an evening with Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt. From the man who started it all, Paul Sinton-Hewitt tells the story of Parkrun, from his simple idea to the global phenomenon it has now become. Growing up in the brutal care system of South Africa, Paul Sinton-Hewitt had a lonely, difficult childhood. Yet he found solace in running – a simple pleasure that taught him resilience and offered a young boy a sense of self-worth. With dogged determination, Paul built a stable family life for himself and eventually settled in the UK. But by 2004 he was struggling to hold it all together. He’d lost the successful career he’d worked so hard for, his marriage had broken down, and now a devastating injury threatened to cut him off from the running club which had been a lifeline. In search of connection and purpose, Paul came up with a simple idea. He would start a weekly time trial run every Saturday morning in his local park. There would be no winners or losers, it would always be free and Paul would be there every week – even on Christmas Day – whether or not anyone else came. Little did he know that from just thirteen runners on that first Saturday, parkrun would grow into a 10 million strong community across five continents. Twenty years on parkrun continues to grow, bringing together people from all walks of life in search of health, happiness and community. Filled with hope and optimism, One Small Step is a powerful affirmation of how coming together in simple ways can change our own lives and might even change the world. We are delighted to be hosting this event in collaboration with Adrenaline Sporting Events and look forward to welcoming Paul to Oswestry for what should be an inspirational evening! Join us for an evening with bestselling historians and number one military podcast hosts James Holland and Al Murray as they talk about their new book Victory '45: The End of the War in Eight Surrenders From the Italian Alps to northern Germany, to London, New York, Washington and Tokyo, Victory ’45 tells the story of the extraordinary summer when the greatest conflagration the world had ever known finally came to an end after eight surrenders that heralded the Allied victory. Comprised of eight chapters based around each of those surrenders and the victory celebrations which followed, it will be rich in character and human drama with revealing stories and perspectives behind the end of the war not yet told before. Each chapter will follow the viewpoints of a number of key characters as they traverse these world-changing events – from ordinary servicemen and women and civilians to generals and political leaders. What took place during the negotiations of those surrenders and the terms that were agreed there would determine the directions the participating countries would take in the years that followed and ultimately the shape of our current world. Literary Arts
BAFTA winning co-creator of Gavin & Stacey, Ruth Jones returns to Oswestry! We’re thrilled to announce an event with much loved actress, screenwriter and bestselling author, Ruth Jones, for her new novel, ‘By Your Side’. Linda and Levi will never meet. But they’re going to change each other’s lives. In her role at the council’s Unclaimed Heirs Unit, Linda Standish investigates the lives of those who’ve died alone and tracks down any living relatives. She’s been a friend to the friendless for the past thirty-three years. And now she’s looking forward to an early retirement. But before she hangs up her lanyard, Linda must take on one last case – that of Levi Norman Jones – a Welshman who’d made his home on a remote Scottish island for the past five years. What brought Levi here? And who did he leave behind? Obliged to travel (by hearse) with her arch nemesis Fergus Murray, and helped (and hindered) by the eccentric local residents, Linda searches for clues to a life now lost. And in the process unexpectedly makes new friends, and discovers things about herself she never knew. Bursting with all the heart and humour that has made Ruth’s name as a screenwriter and author, By Your Side is about finding joy in the most unlikely connections, and the importance of holding onto friendship, love and community – especially when life gets messy. Ruth Jones MBE is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing – BBC 1’s Gavin and Stacey, in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins, and Sky 1’s Stella. She has numerous other television credits to her name. Now, the author of ‘Never Greener’, ‘Us Three’, and ‘Love Untold’, publishes her new novel, ‘By Your Side’ - a joyful and life-affirming story with characters you’ll come to know and love, shining a compassionate light on human nature and why we make the mistakes we do. We can’t wait to welcome Ruth back to Oswestry for this afternoon event. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to see her! If you've not done lino printing before come along to this session where you can have a go and pick up the basic techniques. This session will be running at the same time as one for people who are confident with the basics of lino printing and are going to have a go at redution lino printing over 3 sessions. It's ideal for those of you who either haven't done it before or not for a very long time and need to be reminded what to do! In a really supportive and encouraging environment, with people round you who really want to progress, you'll be in the perfect place to design and then cut out and make your first prints. They will be perfect for mounting on cards (which can be purchased at £1 each including envelopes) making into gift tags (two for £1) or perhaps framing so you can remind yourself about your creativity every time you look at it! So bring an apron and a packet of wet wipes as it's improtantt to keep both you and your work area clean. Printing ink can be a little sticky and good at staining! And bring some ideas for a design. A photograph, a picture or a design, bring a few so we can decide which is the best to start with! Your first lino cut won't be too complicated but it's a good opportunity to try out different cutting blades and have a go at straight and curved lines etc. If you find you're getting on well you might have time to produce a simple first print, and then work at something a little more complex for your second! But this isn't a race. Take your time, be relaxed and chillded, enjoy meeting some new friends and the home made cake and tea nad coffee to sustain you! And treat yourself to a morrning of creativity. Please note lino cutting tools are sharp so this class is not suitable for your childrne or those who don't have a reaonsaly steady hand. Children over the age of 11 accompanied by a paying adult can attend. There is a £3 discount for children so message me and I can send you payment details.
