A Rehearsed Reading of 'Nothing on Earth' by Anna Reynolds + Q&A | Books on the Rise

Join us on Thursday 26th of September at 7PM as Drama on the Rise returns for a special rehearsed reading of Anna Reynolds 'Nothing on Earth.' A funny, moving play which celebrates the lives of three real-life heroines: Edwardian balloonist and parachutist Dolly Shepherd (1886–1983), suffragette Constance Lytton (1869–1923), and interwar explorer Violet Cressy-Marcks (1895–1970). Past and present intertwine as their stories collide with Jade, a 21st century woman coming to terms with the loss of her beloved grandfather while working in a care home after her career as an air steward is grounded by the pandemic. After this special rehearsed reading we will have an opportunity to speak with the playwright Anna Reynolds for a short Q&A! The play was originally commissioned by Pursued by a Bear TC and the University of Hertfordshire and performed in 2023. Cast tbc Director tba About the playwright Anna Reynolds has written over 20 plays including the award-winning Jordan, Red, Skin Hunger and Wild Things. Her work has been seen at Watford Palace (SoulPlay, Ring Road Tales), West Yorkshire Playhouse (Precious), Colchester Mercury (Blue Sky State), The Pleasance, Edinburgh (Stand By Your Van) and many other venues. She has written for opera, dance, theatre, screen, circus, short-story anthologies and numerous newspapers and magazines. She has won awards from Time Out magazine, the Writers’ Guild, and she runs the UK’s leading writing website WriteWords. Her opera Push! (Tête-à-Tête, 2006) was described by the Guardian as ‘brilliant, celebratory, painful, tremendous’. She won the Yeovil prize for short fiction with her story ‘The Bleeding Heart’ in 2007. Anna has taught creative writing at a wide variety of venues including prisons, community centres, drama schools and universities. She is currently a reader for Cornerstones literary consultancy and for the Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland.

For fans of Tessa Bailey and Hannah Grace, After the Red Carpet is a feel-good, contemporary celebrity romance about what happens after the fairy-tale beginning as two lovers work toward their own true meaning of “happily ever after.” About Patricia Leavy Patricia Leavy, Ph.D., is a best-selling, award-winning novelist, arts advocate, and internationally recognized leader in research design and arts-based research. She is widely considered the world’s most visible proponent of arts-based research as a means of making research publicly accessible. Moreover, she coined the terms “social fiction” and “fiction-based research” and has been pioneering the world-wide effort to legitimate fiction as a research practice. A prolific author, Dr. Leavy has published over 40 books. She has earned critical and commercial success in both nonfiction and fiction, and her work has been translated into numerous languages. Dr. Leavy’s works have garnered a slew of book awards, over 100, including USA Best Book Awards, Independent Press Awards, International Impact Book Awards, National Indie Excellence Awards, Firebird Book Awards, International Book Awards, New York City Big Book Awards, and American Fiction Awards. On the academic side, Dr. Leavy earned her Ph.D. in Sociology at Boston College in 2002. She was a tenured Associate Professor of Sociology at Stonehill College from 2002-2012 where she also served as Founding Director of the Gender Studies Program and the Chairperson of the Sociology & Criminology Department. Dr. Leavy previously taught at Boston College, Northeastern University, and Curry College. In 2012 Dr. Leavy left academia to focus her full-time efforts on her work as an author and public intellectual. He is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London, Chair of the Royal Society of Literature, on the Council of the Society of Authors, Advisor to Poetry By Heart, and presents the weekly Poetry Extra on Radio 4 Extra. Nagra’s collections have won the Foward Prize for Best Individual Poem and Best First Book, the South Bank Show Decibel Award and the Cholmondeley Award. He lives with his family in Harrow. Lavinia Singer Lavinia Singer is the author of the pamphlet Ornaments: A Handbook (If a Leaf Falls/Glyph Press, 2020) and co-editor of Try To Be Better (Prototype, 2019), a creative-critical engagement with the work of W. S. Graham. Her poetry has been awarded the Newdigate Prize, the SMV Heritage Poetry Competition, the Pre-Raphaelite Society Poetry Prize; shortlisted for the inaugural White Review Poetry Prize, the Margaret Hewson Award for New Writing and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize; and longlisted for the National Poetry Competition. She works as an editor of poetry at Faber. Artifice is her first full collection of poetry.

A great introduction to darkroom printing or a refresher course for anyone who hasn’t been in the darkroom for a while—learn the necessary skills for printing in a traditional wet black & white darkroom with instructor Ruth Kaplan. This workshop will guide participants on the fundamentals of black and white printing, including darkroom chemistry setup and safety, enlarger use, test prints and contact sheets through more advanced printing techniques such as dodging & burning and the use of filters to enhance your images. Participants should bring processed B&W negatives. All other materials provided. – Ruth Kaplan is a documentary-based photographer whose work explores a variety of themes such as the social behaviour of bathers in communal hot springs, participants in rituals of spirituality and most recently, refugee shelters in Canadian/U.S.A. border cities including Detroit, Buffalo and Fort Erie. Her first monograph, Bathers, has recently been published by Damiani.Kaplan has exhibited internationally and is represented by the Stephen Bulger Gallery.Her editorial work can be found in major Canadian and international publications, she has received numerous grants and awards and is currently photography professor at OCAD University and Toronto Metropolitan University.
