Kaleta. The singer/guitarist from the West African country of Benin Republic lived his adolescent life in Lagos, Nigeria where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta's guitar chops earned him decades of touring and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Lauryn Hill and more.
Kaleta got his start in the late 70s performing in church and was soon after picked up by iconic Juju master and world music pioneer King Sunny Ade. A few years later Fela Kuti came calling. Kaleta would go on to tour the world playing guitar for the King of Afrobeat in his storied band Egypt 80 through the 1980s and into the 1990s.
Now based in New York City, Kaleta has been leading Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album Mèdaho, which was released by California indie label Ubiquity Records, draws on the group’s shared reverence for the raw, psychedelic sounds that captivated Kaleta as a music loving kid in 1970s Benin. Mèdaho means big brother, elder or teacher and is dedicated to Kaleta's late brother Ligan-Ozavino Pascal who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very early age. The album was included on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer 2019” list and two of the songs were chosen for the ABC/Hulu series High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz. Support by FACTOR

Story of One, Story of Many What happens when everything about you gets tarnished with a single brush and your story becomes one of many… Brunel Arts associate artists Amina Khayyam Dance Company will perform a variation of their critically acclaimed production ONE. This new piece uses high-energy Kathak featuring the cyclic phenomenon of South Asian classical arts and philosophy – where there is no beginning or end, incorporating Nritta (pure dance) and Nritya (expression of narrative), to capture the first beat of that cyclic time and nest it until it becomes the ‘one’ again – to tell the experiences of migrants maligned with generalisations and stereotype. Three dancers weave individual stories accompanied by live music featuring tabla and cello. Story of One, Story of Many - Amina Khayyam Dance Company AKDC STUDIO | Eastern Gateway Auditorium

Choreographed by Amina Khayyam, with Kathak composition collaboration with Debasish Mukerjee three Kathak dancers weave individual stories accompanied by live music featuring tabla and cello. The show is available at varying lengths 20 | 30 | 40 min. Consistent to AKDC’s use of kathak as a storytelling form, the theme of Story of One, Story of Many… as in ONE, explores stories of migrants tarnished by media and politicians for cheap exploitation, spreading fear for those risking their lives to make a better future. … of characters branded ‘illegal’ by media and politicians, of migrants increasingly depicted as illegitimate and unwelcomed entity –‘invaders’. The term attaches criminality to people only seeking sanctuary and protection. It paints asylum seekers as individuals who must be treated with suspicion by default, even if they happen to be children who had no say in their predicament. It automatically assumes the invalidity of a human being's right to seek sanctuary to protect their life amid dangerous circumstances such as natural disasters, unrest or poverty. There is a casual and apparent ‘Othering’ of the migrant – implying that he belongs to a place outside the border, takes an ‘unnecessary’ risk with an unsafe passage and feeds the network of nefarious smugglers – even as the migrants themself continue to face significant uncertainty. We should remind ourselves that human displacement has always been central to the development of thriving civilisations, and humans have crossed lands and seas long before borders even existed. On making of ONE and why the new adaptation “Since the ice age, our pre-historic ancestors - homo erectus, hominids, Neanderthals, Denisovans and who ever – have been crossing continents to find better habitual climates so that we, homo sapiens, got chance to evolve to what we are now. Today we are doing no different – displaced by climate change, war, political extortion and many other reasons – many of us are following that same human trait – cross continents to survive or better ourselves. Yet, ‘migrants’, ‘foreigners’, ‘refugees’ are words tarnished ‘dirty’ and ‘negative’ by the media and harboured by politicians for political gain. I have approached the making of ONE to emphasise and subscribe to the fundamental principle of Indian philosophy and classical arts that there is no beginning or end but just a cyclic phenomenon where the obsession with territory has no significance. I delve into the wealth and power of Kathak exploring technique such as nritta: abstract rhythmic mathematic based compositions (tukras, tihais, lari) and nritya: expression through narrative (gatnikas - a rhythmic character composition), satvika and ang abhinaya (emotional body movement) and aharya abhinaya (use of costume and stage), to portray the journey of migrants and refugees within that cyclic phenomenon all of us are all journeying. After performing it over 40 shows of ONE, I now want to make the piece easily available to audiences and young emerging dancers. It has been adapted for both outdoor and in small scale theatre spaces.” Amina Khayyam Photo Credit: Simon Richardson If you are unable to book your ticket online please do walk in on the day and purchase your ticket at the door.
