Launching Women's Iconography in the 21st Century: A Digital Archive | Lancaster University Library

Mar 10, 2025 (UTC+0)
Lancaster
Arts
Fine Art
You are cordially invited to the launch of Women’s Iconography in the 21st Century (insert link to archive) —a new archive for Lancaster University’s Digital Collections Platform. This archive is part of the AHRC-funded Impact Acceleration Project, Contemporary Women Icons, led by Dr Azelina Flint (Associate Researcher) and Dr Brian Baker (Senior Lecturer), of ELCW. This project raises awareness of women’s understudied accomplishments in Orthodox iconography: a practice of Christian sacred art that was historically male dominated. Known as ‘windows to eternity’, icons allow viewers to meet holy figures who gaze out at them from an invisible world. As the first documentary project of women’s iconography, Contemporary Women Icons explores how women from a range of denominational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds make a space for themselves in this ancient tradition. Our archive is the first of its kind and digitally preserves the work of women from across the world, including Armenia, Brazil, Canada, Latvia, Lebanon, Greece, Finland, Mexico, Russia, the USA and the Ukraine, as well as the UK. It features both traditional iconography and iconography-inspired sacred art that modernises the tradition through using present-day techniques and depicting figures outside the traditional canon of sainthood. The launch will include talks from a range of artists on the platform and lectures from the project’s Co-Is. Registration is free with refreshments, snacks and possible musical entertainment included! The event is hybrid. To attend online, register at this link: Launching Women’s Iconography in the Twenty-First Century: A Digital Archive - Events - Lancaster University To attend in person, register with EventBrite. Sensory Friendly Programming Session | Lancaster Museum of Art and History

Mar 1, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Lancaster
Arts
MOAH’s sensory-friendly programming boasts an array of resources and services for neurodivergent guests before and during the museum experience. Beginning with the social narrative, which is available on MOAH’s website, guests can read a first-person description of a trip to MOAH, with important details regarding parking, entrance/exit points, restrooms, and how to access on-site sensory-friendly resources. Guests can attend special open hours, which occur before the museum opens to the public. During these special open hours, the lighting in the museum is dimmed and the audio components of artworks are lowered. Upon arrival at the museum, guests are offered a sensory-friendly programming map, which pin-points changes in light and noise, along with the exact locations of hands-on sensory-friendly programming activities. Guests with hyper/hypo-sensitivities also have access to a take-a-break space on the bottom level of the museum. This room is sectioned off from main walkways and contains calming tools and water within a quiet, dimly lit space. Speech cards, in both Spanish and English, are available at the guest services desk to assist non-verbal visitors. Optional sensory-friendly programming activities include the multi-sensory tour and a hands-on art activity. The multi-sensory tour is a self-guided tour with stations throughout the museum. Each station focuses on a single work of art and includes an object or objects that can be used to enhance the viewer’s sensory experience of the artwork. Tour “stations” allow guests to engage with staff members and multi-sensory items on a volunteer basis. The voluntary, hands-on art activity, offered in the MOAH classroom, is designed to adapt to hyper- and hypo-sensitivities, as well as multiple age groups and abilities. In many cases, the finished art project doubles as a fidget or calming tool that can be used while exploring the museum. Information Source: Lancaster Museum of Art and History | eventbrite
