Steve Dawson with Fats Kaplin | Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre
Apr 5, 2025 (UTC-8)
Centre
Juno Award-winning guitarist, producer and songwriter Steve Dawson will be making a quick swing through the west coast of Canada in April 2025 and will have legendary sideman Fats Kaplin in tow from Nashville. Steve’s unique voice on slide and lap steel guitar is front and centre, while the two musicians improvise and play off each other as they have done in their frequent work together. Steve’s original songs and fiery slide guitar playing are the focus, along with the duo's unique take on blues, Hawaiian, and ragtime music that both musicians love to play. While Steve is well-known to Canadian audiences in his frequent visits back to Canada, Fats Kaplin is sure to be an exciting new find to many. Fats has spent a great deal of time on the road with artists like Jack White, John Prine, Mitski, Beck, Tom Russell, The Dead Reckoners, and Buddy Miller to name just a few. His facility on the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, oud, accordion, and whatever he can lay his hands on makes him one of the most in-demand side-players in modern music. It’s rare for these 2 musicians to find a week where they are both available to tour together, but find it they have, and they look forward to sharing an exciting night of music with audiences in BC. Over the past two decades, Steve Dawson has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted. The music that flows out of him is so natural and authentic that it’s possible to forget all of the toil that went into producing it. A native of Vancouver, Canada, he currently resides in Nashville, where he works as a solo artist, sideman, and record producer, Steve has forged an impressive career full of highlights and awards, including: 7 Juno Awards as artist/producer, 18 times nominated3 times named Producer Of The Year at Western Canadian Music Awards4 times named Producer Of The Year at Canadian Folk Music AwardsRecipient of many other awards including Maple Blues Awards, Grand Prix De Jazz De Montreal, Blues Blast Awards, and many Western Canadian Music Awards and Canadian Folk Awards as an artist and producerThe Upstairs Lounge is a licensed restaurant and bar, doors open at 6 pm for dinner service, the concert starts at 7:30 pm - PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A LISTENING VENUE

There can’t be many people with Internet access who haven’t heard the name of Studio Ghibli. It’s one of the most famous film studios on the planet, producing classics like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. Both Princess Mononoke and the studio’s perennial favourite My Neighbour Totoro have been transformed into stage shows. Concerts of their magical film scores draw huge crowds. But there’s a lot more to Studio Ghibli than just movies. Its art is driven by inspiration from Japanese and Western art, by energies from the streets of Japan and by the mystical qualities of its traditions and its wild places. Helen McCarthy, who wrote the first books in English on anime and on Ghibli’s co- founding director Hayao Miyazaki, will take you on a journey through the studio’s history and inspiration, with time and space to appreciate selected artworks and a list of sources – books, websites and places to visit - if you want to explore further. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Helen McCarthy is a writer, presenter and independent scholar who was introduced to anime in 1981 and has been studying it ever since. Arran Corbetts - mountain running weekend | Little Rock Cafe
Apr 11–Apr 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
Centre
A weekend of guided mountain running on the spectacular isle of Arran, with its panoramic views over fell and sea (accommodation included). Arran is often described as 'Scotland in Miniature' on account of it's varied terrain and stunning beauty - curving coastline, rocky mountain peaks, quiet beaches and island forests. The mountains are a dramatic granite playground with some of the best trails in Scotland. Our exact routes will depend on the weather and specific aspirations of the group - but we will aim to summit all four of the island's iconic Corbetts in a single weekend: Goat Fell; the highest point on the island at 874m Cir Mhor; the most impressive and iconic Corbett in a dramatic rocky setting Caisteal Abhail; the northermost Corbett on Arran, also known as the 'sleeping warrior' on account of its profile Beinn Tarsuinn; the southernmost Corbett and home to the striking 'Old Man of Tarsuinn', a rocky outcrop, shaped uncannily like the head of a man! Our award-winning events provide a solo-friendly and supportive environment, so book alone or with friends, and join us on the wonderful Isle of Arran. We recommend that you are able to comfortably run 10km on trail and have some experience of fell-running or a reasonable level of hill-walking fitness before attending, as this will enable you to get the most out of your experience in the hills with us. We will however, be taking a relaxed and sociable pace and won't be racing around! Expect to walk all the climbs and jog/run the 'flats and downs'. To find out more about what's involved visit: www.girlsonhills.com/faqs We will email you at the beginning of event week to confirm final details. This email will also include a kit list and advice on where to meet us. We will meet-up to check kit and discuss final plans for each day before we start our run. See below for travel and logistics: ACCOMMODATION This weekend includes three nights accommodation at the National Trust's Shore Lodge bunkhouse, situated in the grounds of Brodick Castle. You can expect basic but comfortable self-catering accommodation with communal bunkrooms in a conveniently located lodge - complete with wood-burning stove, fully equipped kitchen and dining room, wash basins and showers, plus electric central heating. LOGISTICS Easily accessible from Glasgow, the bustling town of Brodick is reached by ferry from Adrossan. You can also cross to from Claonaig to Lochranza inthe North but Brodick will be our base for the weekend. You can book your Calmac ferry here. You will need to book an outward ferry journey on Friday 11th April and a return ticket for Monday 14th April. We suggest that you book your ferry early. We will run a mountain route on both Saturday and Sunday (at a leisurely and sociable pace, with plenty of stops!) Unless you wish, you do not need to have a vehicle with you on the island (you can book foot passenger only). We provide minibus shuttles whilst on Arran to reduce environmental impact and pressure on busy parking areas.
