In Celebration of Whale Aria and House of Caravans (New York) | Asian American Writers' Workshop
Arts
Join AAWW this October for a special celebration of Rajiv Mohabir's WHALE ARIA and Shilpi Suneja's HOUSE OF CARAVANS. The event will take place at the Asian American Writers' Workshop in New York City, marking the workshop's official reopening to the public. It's a wonderful opportunity to gather together and honor the richness of Asian, Asian American, and diasporic storytelling. Rajiv Mohabir is an exceptional poet whose latest work, Whale Aria, delves into the realms of ecological, documentary, queer, postcolonial, and diasporic poetics. His exploration of whale songs through multilingual lyricism and irregular forms is captivating and thought-provoking. Shilpi Suneja's House of Caravans is an extraordinary novel that tackles important issues such as race mingling, colonization, historical violence, migrations, and love. Suneja's writing is patient, subtle, and intelligent, making her a genuine artistic voice. The event will feature a conversation between Rajiv, Shilpi, and poet Ashna Ali, focusing on the post-colonial themes of their works and the lessons they can teach us about migration and geopolitics. Please note that RSVP is required to attend, and masks will be mandatory for all attendees. COVID vaccination and testing surveys will be sent to registrants prior to the event. The workshop is committed to accessibility, offering ASL interpretation and an elevator to the 6th floor. If you have any additional accessibility requests, please reach out to events@aaww.org. Join us for this momentous occasion in the literary community.
