Speaker Bios
Joseph Gildner has over 40 years of experience in design and construction management for heavy civil and systems construction in the Pacific Northwest and New England. In the past 33 years, Joe has served as public owner serving as project manager and project executive for final design and construction on commuter- and light-rail projects in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.
As project manager for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District in Portland, Joe was responsible for overseeing all aspects for design and construction of the tunnel alignment for Portland’s Westside MAX Project (twin three-mile tunnels and the Washington Park Station [
North America’s deepest mined underground transit station, to date
]).
Joe is currently serving as Deputy Executive Director for Project Management in Sound Transit’s Capital Delivery Department. Sound Transit is currently engaged in the largest US transit expansion program ($54 B+) that started in 2016 and is schedule to be completed in 2041. At present, Joe is overseeing the and construction on numerous light-rail extension projects in Pierce, King, and Snohomish Counties. These extensions are being delivered using design-bid-build, design-build, and general contractor/construction manager delivery methods.
Joe is also President of Joseph P. Gildner Consulting, LLC., that provides dispute avoidance/resolution and partnering services. Joe is currently serving on two active Dispute Review Boards (DRBs) in the US and one active Combined Review Board (CRB) in Canada.
Dan J. Peterson is a licensed General Engineering Contractor in California, Nevada and Arizona. Mr. Peterson began his construction career at the age of 12, as a carpenter helper framing a custom built home (fifty cents an hour). He graduated from Cass Technical High School, Detroit Michigan, in 1950, where he majored in Architecture. He then attended the University of Michigan and Majored in Architectural Engineering. During college summer vacations, he worked as an assistant superintendent constructing a large shopping center. Upon leaving college, he was a Highway Engineer for the State of California, Division of Highways (now called CalTrans) for 10 years, designing, surveying , technical testing, inspecting and supervising other Engineers (Resident Engineer), building bridges and highways.
For the next 7 years he was minority stockholder, estimator, general manager and chief engineer for Polich-Benedict Construction, a medium sized Engineering Contractor constructing bridges and freeways in California. the firm grew from constructing one $50,000.00 bridge project to an annual volume of over $20,000,000.00 per year. In 1969, he sold his interest in Polich-Benedict and started Dan J. Peterson Company and for the next 12 years constructed bridges, buildings, parks, canals, highways and road projects as small as $2,500.00 to a $10,000,000.00, Freeway Interchange. In 1981, he sold the construction assets (his toys) and for the past 30+ years has been a construction consultant for governments, home owners, insurance companies and contractors on various large and small construction projects in California, Nevada and Arizona. Mr. Peterson has 5 grown children, and 6 grandchildren.
Mr. Peterson is a member and participates on numerous committees and board of directors of constructions organizations, including the AGCCalifornia, AGCSan Diego and AGCNevada, SCCA, UCON, DRBF and the Beavers. Mr. Peterson has been Co-Chairman of the Greenbook Committee since 1996. Part of Mr. Peterson’s consulting since 1990, has been serving on Disputes Resolution Boards (DRB’s) which is the subject of the presentation today
