5-on-5 Rooftop Soccer Mini-Tournament! | Skyline Pitch
Oct 19, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Chicago
Looking to play some soccer, but can't gather enough people to play? Want to play a sport with fun people, but don't want to commit to playing a whole season? Looking to get active without the competitiveness that often comes with joining leagues? Enjoy playing in a co-ed environment? We've got you covered! West Town Social Club's Rooftop Soccer Mini Tournament has been created specifically with individual players in mind--no need to pay for a whole team and beg your hesitant friends to join! All players in this tournament are registered as individuals, and will be assigned to one of four (4) teams based on self-ratings--we do our best to make sure all teams are evenly talented. Whether you are a beginner or an expert soccer player, this event is all about allowing everyone to play in a non-competitive, fun environment. Why? Because at West Town Social Club, we're all about having a good time! This event will be co-ed, so that everyone has a chance to play. FORMAT We'll be playing on a futsal-sized 5-on-5 field on a parking garage rooftop, where each team will play five (5) 10-minute games over the course of 2 hours. The first hour will see each team play 3 games (1 against each other team) in a round robin to determine seeding for the playoffs. The winner of the first round of the playoffs will then play to determine the winner of the tournament. AFTER PARTY We will have a great after party lined up after the tournament ends at a location TBD! TEAMMATE REQUESTS/FULL TEAM SIGNUPS Anyone who registers a friend (or significant other) alongside them will get placed on a team together! Requests for additional teammates will be considered on a case-by-case basis up until one week prior to the tournament, and are not guaranteed to be honored. Please remember that this is meant to be a fun tournament where the emphasis is on being social/meeting new people rather than being competitive! Additionally, with this being a social event, full team signups are not available. While we hope to make this an absolutely fun and memorable tournament, there are a handful of important, not-so-fun things to note. Please see below: AGE REQUIREMENT: All participants must be at least 21 years old to participate. Proof of age may be requested by the organizer on the day of the event; please bring identification in case. Those who register and cannot show proof of age will be denied participation in the tournament and will NOT be refunded. ALCOHOL: Alcohol consumption is prohibited at the facility. REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be issued except in the event of a non-weather related cancellation. WAIVER: All participants will be asked to sign two digital waivers prior to participation, one for Skyline Pitch and one for West Town Social Club. Participants must agree that West Town Social Club will not be held liable for any injuries and/or illness associated with participating in this soccer tournament. Failure to sign this waiver will result in participation being denied with no refund being issued. WEATHER POLICY: We will do our best to play through the tournament on October 19th! In the event that inclement weather prevents play onthat date, we will have a party and prize raffle at the sponsor bar. Any decisions regarding game play will be at the sole discretion of the organizer. Registration closes 24 hours prior to the event on 10/19, no exceptions! Reserve your spot today! NO REFUNDS; ALL SALES FINAL Like and follow West Town Social Club on Facebook/Instagram for all of the latest on upcoming fun events! https://www.facebook.com/WestTownSocialClub https://www.instagram.com/westtownsocialclub/

Book Talk: "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" | American Writers Museum
Oct 20, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Chicago
Join us for an engaging discussion about the bestselling novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, presented in conjunction with our special exhibit Level Up: Writers & Gamers. Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have read before. This program is part of Chicago Public Library's 2024 One Book, One Chicago initiative and is free to attend. We will also offer this program again on September 15, 2024. You can register for that date here. More about Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow: On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Level Up: Writers & Gamers, where the magic of game writing awaits! Embark on a thrilling adventure into the world of game writing and explore the role of narrative and storytelling in gaming, from the 1970s to today. Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, Level Up enriches your understanding of writing through fun and interactive formats, inspires young people to try a new form of writing, and encourages exploration of the worlds created through games. Take a deep dive into the world of game writing, and learn about topics such as Live Action Role Playing, Decision Trees/Choice Making, Character Creation, Notable Events in Gaming History, Game-Adjacent Writing, and more. Through a timeline and a series of interactive features, including a mock basement game room where you can play games, you’ll have an active role in the story of Level Up. THE Artisanal Roomscape LABORATORY | Interior Tour - Morning Light | 4733 S Forrestville Ave

Chicago
Experience the materiality of Light in Space, tour Roomscape interiors illuminated with Morning Light. Join us at The GREYSTONE Collective for Indelible ORIGINS | Place + People for curated tours with Interior Architect | Clemenstien Love (CL). Experience the materiality of Light in Space. CL explores spatial solutions for a room beginning with the four walls. The magic of a place develops in that very cavity. Unlike the façade of the house and unlike a painting or sculpture, the view of a room lies precisely in its hollow form, at the center of its four walls. In the room, the walls surround a person; Light – the light of morning, of afternoon, and of evening, the artificial lights of night – transforms everything. In the morning the room is ignited by the sun, with strong shadows; in the afternoon it is softened; at dawn, it is cold; toward evening, gilded; and then, ashine with the blaze of nighttime lights. Every object, material surface, painting, sculpture, piece of furniture is involved in the process and every room has its most beautiful hour. Chicago
Join us at the Logan Center for the Arts for an artist talk with Mexico City-based interdisciplinary artist Fabiola Torres-Alzaga, hosted by the Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts at The University of Chicago. Torres-Alzaga’s practice is informed by a queer perspective and her works originate from scenic systems such as cinema, theater, and magic—the complex visual hierarchies between the spectator and the narratives constituting the image. Through video, film, installation, sculpture, photography, and drawing, Torres-Alzaga investigates visual geographies in their diverse fields of representation and their repercussions in our socio-spatial relations, with special emphasis on the presence of the invisible. The artist will give a presentation discussing recent solo exhibitions and projects, including a screening of her most recent film, Las Desinvitadas , (2023). A reception will follow the talk. The 11th annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art—as featured in Publishers Weekly, Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago, and more—takes place October 26 to November 2. This one-of-a-kind cross-cultural, bilingual festival brings together writers and visual artists from Mexico and Chicago for a week-long series of public programming at venues throughout Chicago. Inspired by the media landscape of both presidential elections taking place in the countries this year, the theme of the festival is “Saturation/Saturación.” Participants will consider concepts such as intensity, combination, absorption, maximums and limitations as they respond to the urgent political, social, and environmental issues confronting both countries.
