When you come to Madrid, Tablao, which performs flamenco dance, is undoubtedly a place that tourists don’t want to miss at night. Tabalo refers to an art form in which flamenco and dance are performed in the unique atmosphere of a restaurant. Dancers once moved from the streets to theaters, but later moved to perform in restaurants due to high taxes and other economic reasons. The Flamenco Biennial has been held every two years since 1980, and from 2015 onwards, the September Flamenco Festival will be held in every odd-numbered year. The event includes flamenco competitions and various singing and dancing performances, showcasing this unique Spanish art. The selection and programming of the event are handled by two committees, one is the Artistic Committee, which is composed of five recognized masters in the flamenco world; the other is the Advisory Committee, which is composed of ten experts and is responsible for providing advice on other performances and activities held in conjunction with the Biennial, including related courses, lectures, interviews and seminars. The Biennial will last for nearly a month. The September Flamenco Festival lasts for two weeks.

After 62 years, survivor Robyn Howarth shares her story. Robyn Howarth was 10 years old when she was kidnapped from her classroom in Faraday. Her book tells her story of life on the farm, that heinous event and the aftermath. Robyn tells the story through the lens of childhood trauma, and the effect it had on herself and her family. It has taken Robyn 62 years to acknowledge with pride that she came from Faraday and was educated at Faraday State School 797. In January 1986, in the basement of a block of flats in the Madrid neighbourhood of Chamberí, Maite Arratibel, Celia García Bravo, Nacho Pérez de la Paz and Pedro Roldán founded an alternative art space christened, ironically, Galería Nacional. At the same time, in January of that same year, Manuel Saiz launched the Postal Service for Multiple Exhibitions and Propaganda, a postal art initiative presented as “an unorthodox magazine, in which the pages and articles are received one by one and separately, a gallery that in each delivery will show a work to the viewer’s home and not the other way around.” According to the editorial note, simply and plainly, “a wedge of artistic opposition.” A radical collaborative project that, months later, would merge with the critical spirit of the partners and friends of the Galería Nacional, where Manuel Saiz arrived guided by Julio Jara, a colleague in exhibitions at the Villalar gallery and an early collaborator in both projects. It was from this meeting, and together with the contributions of other artists and theorists such as Javier Colis, José Díaz Cuyás, Celia Martín, Pamen Pereira or Alberto Vidarte, when they decided to unite both independent initiatives in a common project: GENE, a gallery of collective production that publishes multiples in postcard format.

Script Writing & ImprovWe invite First Nations participants as well as anyone who may be interested in exploring writing for the theatre in its many forms, regardless of previous experience or background. This workshop provides a safe space to discover the joys of writing for theatre and improvisation. The only prerequisites are an inquisitive mind, a sense of curiosity, and an openness to learning from others with diverse voices and perspectives. Run by Dr Raimondo Cortese, Senior Lecturer of Theatre at the VCA, the classes focus on script writing for theatre or digital mediums. Dialogue is driven by what people do to each other, rather than by literal meaning. Action is the foundation of drama, i.e. on how words impact on the people speaking them. It is critical to allow the written text to inhabit the actor/writer to become emotionally connected to what you 'speak'. A series of simple exercises are used to allow the participants to focus on physical action/what is happening. Writing dialogue is an intricate and complex art, but one that has the potential to be very enjoyable. It is important to discover the pleasures of writing, to understand and appreciate the boundless nuances and complexities in the way we behave.
