This heart-expanding Sundance hit introduces audiences to Terry's diminutive patients through breathtaking slow-motion photography and emotional storytelling. Over the course of director Sally Aitken’s moving documentary, we become deeply invested in baby hummingbirds like Cactus and Wasabi, celebrating their tiny victories and lamenting their tragedies. The Oak Park Village Hall, located at 123 Madison St., is a notable example of mid-century modern architecture, designed by Harry Weese & Associates and completed in 1975. It reflects brutalist design elements, characterized by its use of exposed concrete and geometric forms. The building was designed with sustainability in mind, featuring passive solar design elements, earth berming, and energy-efficient insulation, which were innovative for its time. Additionally, the site includes native landscaping and a stormwater management system, which are of interest to environmentalists. The Village has continued to integrate sustainability efforts, aligning with Oak Park’s broader environmental policies.

Gantt Center’s upcoming exhibition, Black Behind Bars: The Untold Story of Black Biker Culture. We are excited to feature the work of acclaimed photographer Alvin C. Jacobs, Jr. Enjoy an evening of art and culture with appearances by the artist Alvin C. Jacobs, Jr. and the curators Dr. Keith Cradle and Ricky Singh. This exhibit is a striking visual exploration of Black biker culture and its profound impact on identity, mental well-being, and community. Black Behind Bars highlights the open road as a sanctuary, offering freedom, healing, and resilience. It challenges stereotypes and illuminates the therapeutic power of riding, where the hum of an engine becomes a form of meditation. Black bikers have long contributed to American motorcycle culture, yet their history remains untold. This exhibition urges viewers to reconsider their preconceptions about bike culture and its riders. It invites an understanding that transcends stereotypes and acknowledges the strength of community, the importance of mental health support, and the value of genuine second chances. Click/tap here for parking and directions. Image Credits:Alvin Jacobs, Road Glide, 2024. Courtesy of the artist.About the ArtistAlvin C. Jacobs, Jr.,a native of Rockford, Illinois, is a photographer and image activist based in Charlotte, recognized for his striking black-and-white documentary work. Immersed in motorcycle culture from an early age, Jacobs grew up near the world’s oldest family-owned Harley-Davidson dealership and was influenced by his father's motorcycle clubhouse, established in 1977. These experiences fostered a profound connection to the biker community, which he now captures through photography. Jacobs honed his craft on the front lines of America's social justice movements, capturing pivotal moments in cities such as Ferguson, MO; Minneapolis, MN; New York City; and Charlottesville, VA. His distinctive aesthetic is marked by a propensity to highlight stark contrast and work in black and white – both in photography and the world. He also contributed to the award-winning exhibit, K(NO)W Justice, K(NO)W Peace, at Levine Museum of the New South. In 2018, Jacobs was named the Harvey B. Gantt Center's artist-in-residence, during which he produced the award-winning exhibition Welcome to Brookhill, a compelling visual narrative of Charlotte's historic Brookhill Village. This work earned him recognition as one of Charlotte Magazine's Charlotteans of the Year and Creative Loafing's Best Photographer of 2018.”

Fre and open to the public. Meet in the lobby at 4 pm. Highlighting uncertainty and contradiction, the artworks featured in Truth or Dare: A Reality Show emphasize the importance of questioning both knowledge and belief by utilizing illusion to entice, entertain, and explore the terrain between fact and fiction, presence and absence, reality and imagination. The suspension of disbelief is invoked in works that simulate games, maps, and tricks of the eye and hand — not to deceive but to engage and connect. Featuring painting, photography, video, and site-specific installation, Truth or Dare speaks truth to power through unconventional, often playful juxtapositions of imagery and materials. Featured artists include Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Alejandro Almanza Pereda, Trong Gia Nguyen, Siebren Versteeg, Federico Solmi, Ann Hamilton, Pedro Reyes, Leo Villareal, and Laura Letinsky, among many others. Exhibition tour of “Living Without the Gods” by artist Shaurya Kumar. | South Asia Institute
Apr 26, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Chicago
Join featured artist Shaurya Kumar for a gallery tour of his current exhibition Living Without The Gods starting at 2PM.
Chicago-based artist Shaurya Kumar investigates how human societies construct meaning and identity in the absence of monuments and objects that once anchored their cultures. Kumar explores the transformation of artifacts when displaced from their original contexts, reflecting on the modern ruin. Through printmaking, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography and installation, he examines crumbled temples, relocated columns, empty tombs, and lost traditions, questioning the fate of cultural relics lost to time, museums, or private collectors. The exhibition fosters dialogue on identity, history, and diaspora.
