The Dark Side of Edinburgh | Edinburgh Old Town
Jul 2, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
If you want a mundane, humdrum history walk, this is not the tour for you. But... if you want to learn what the tourist industry leaves out? The hidden, gruesome crimes and punishments? The long forgotten twisted, sadistic characters? The thousands of lives painfully lost in the cruel grip of Edinburgh's past? Maybe you are brave enough to learn the truth.
Hear of witches, cannibals, murders, thieves, body snatchers, blood thirsty mobs and the devil in disguise. We will explore haunted graveyards, hide up darkened closes, spit on the Heart of Midlothian and bravely face where Edinburgh believed the world ended. You even get a chance to knock on Bloody Mackenzie's door, if you dare!
Madam McKinnon or William Burke will guide you through our streets under cover of darkness. They've been dead for almost 200 years and do not take kindly to modern nonsense. They will however, crack your sides with laughter over their dry Scottish wit. And their tales will chill you to your core.
Our tours are historically accurate, with a history this dark there's no need to fabricate!
Our stops
The Grassmarket: where you will discover the castles curse and the nasty secrets etched into the cobble stone square.
Greyfriars Kirkyard: one of the most haunted graveyards in the world. It's not just about a loyal dog. As the twilight hits the ghouls come out to play!
The Royal Mile: with such attractions as St Giles Cathedral, the Tron Kirk and the Old Tolbooth Prison. Not just a tourist hot-spot but a street that once ran dark with blood.

, at
7pm
, to speak about her second book,
How the New Education Establishment Betrayed the World’s Poorest Children: Broken Promises, Broken Schools
, published by Bloomsbury Academic in February 2025. The book takes the reader through the author’s journey, both practical and intellectual, spanning two decades. It brings a critical lens to widely-held beliefs in the power of education and the need to deliver this quickly and at scale, outlining all but insurmountable obstacles to realising local, national and global ambitions. Highly contextualised direct experience over 20 years from one part of Uttar Pradesh, India, is blended with historical sources and primary and secondary data from a broad range of African countries. The book considers public, private and blended approaches to education delivery.
Joanna is a writer and researcher who has conducted extensive research on low-fee private schooling targeting lower income communities in India, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Mozambique. This research was carried out while working on a range of donor and foundation-funded projects and she has also worked in other African and Asian countries on issues other than private schooling. While living and working in Nigeria, she designed and oversaw the only comprehensive census of private schools in Lagos, amongst other research into private schooling in the country, including Kwara State and the federal capital, Abuja. She has also worked on other types of projects in Liberia, Malawi and Bangladesh. Her first book,
Low-fee Private Schooling and Poverty in Developing Countries
, was published in 2021 by Bloomsbury Academic.

You’re In the Right Place
You feel deeply. You think deeply. But somewhere along the way, you were told that your depth was “too much.” That your softness wasn’t strong enough. That your emotions needed to be controlled and managed, instead of understood and celebrated.
You’ve been aching to make some changes, but you’re worried everything might go wrong — and that failure would prove you’ve never been good enough anyway.
I want to invite you to stop waiting for permission, and give yourself approval to step into a new life that you’ll love.
This group is for women who are tired of:
Second guessing every decision
Feeling stuck in the same repetitive cycles
Staying small to make everyone else happy
Meet Your Guide
Hi, I’m Natalie — Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Life Coach.
Why is the group free?
Because I believe in this work. I know what it’s like to feel weird, different, and misunderstood. There was a time when I was stuck in self-doubt, staying small, and waiting for someone to tell me I was good enough.
You don’t have to do this alone. And you don’t have to wait until you “have it all figured out” to get support and connection.
We’ve created an LGBTQ friendly space where anyone who identifies as a woman is welcome so we can all stop playing nice and start living full out.
This is your invitation to step into something new. To give yourself the gift of community, clarity, and connection to the possibilities in your life.
What to Expect
We’ll meet on Zoom for 60 minutes.
You can participate as much or as little as you’d like. I coach people who volunteer for 15 to 20 minutes each. If no one volunteers to be coached, I’ll give some tips on being a Wild Hearted Woman.
Your video will not be recorded, and audio replays are available exclusively to clients in a private coaching space for those receiving ongoing support.
This Space is For You If…
✔ You have times of feeling confused or overwhelmed by your emotions.
✔ You’ve spent your life making sure everyone else is happy, but don’t know how to give yourself the same care.
✔ You feel frozen by fear of failure, rejection, or abandonment.
✔ You crave a life that feels softer, slower, and more aligned — but don’t know where to start.
✔ You’re making big changes in your life (leaving a relationship, stepping into something new, healing from the past) and want support from women who truly see you.
Ready to Join Us?
You’re not too much. You’re not behind. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
And you are SO ready for this.
Sign up now and get access to our next live session:

Princess Marie of Edinburgh: Romania’s Writer-Queen | National Library of Scotland
Jul 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
In this talk, Shona Kallestrup draws upon the works of Princess Marie which are held by the National Library of Scotland, as she explores the life and legacy of this influential woman.
Princess Marie (1875-1938) was the daughter of the Duke of Edinburgh, but became the charismatic Queen of Romania after her marraige to King Ferdinand I. She played a crucial role during the First World War and Paris Peace Conference, influencing diplomatic negotiations on behalf of Romania.
Marie was celebrated at home and abroad as the ‘Mother of all Romanians’. Her international fame owed much to her skill as a writer and her understanding of the power of the photographic image.
The event will include an address to the audience from
Her Royal Highness, Princess Sophia,
a direct descendant of Princess Marie.
About the speaker
Shona Kallestrup
is a lecturer in Central and East European art history at the University of St Andrews. Her interest in Queen Marie stems from many years of research in Romanian collections and royal palaces.
This event is part of the

Edinburgh
"Blood and Guts walking tour was amazing! We loved the tour guide, all the history and stories we heard. It was also awesome to walk around the museum afterwards.” *****
Join Surgeons Hall Museums on their 5* walking tour through Edinburgh’s old town.
We will take you through the highs and lows of Edinburgh’s world renowned medical history. Discover the intrigues, rivalries and dedication to the cause as our guide leads you through the sites where anatomists, surgeons and physicians worked, operated and squabbled in the quest for medical advancement.
Drawn from the archives at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh you will hear little known accounts of iconic writers, chloroform tea parties, pioneering women, grave robbing and of course Britain’s first serial killers the infamous Burke and Hare.
Hear tales of old Edinburgh, disease, dissection and curious methods of treatment.
Tours will last between 75 and 90min and include free museum access from 10am-5pm on the day of your tour.
We always aim to be finished by 75mins, but, due to the nature of a walking tour, factors out with our control may lengthen this. We recommend that you allow for 1 hour 30.
