May 18, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
A creatively held safe space for men to explore vocal resonance, creativity, and deep connection beyond words, through sound, rhythms, somatic practices, movement, and singing. These sessions will take place around the Sacred fire (indoor option available)
About the Session:
This is a space for men to reconnect, around the fireside, with their voices in a way that goes beyond speaking.
Unlike many men’s groups that focus on a model of verbal sharing, this experience offers a non-verbal approach to connection and self-expression, using sound, vibration, and deep listening to create deepened connection and deepening bond between participants
Through playful vocal exercises and games drawing from collaborative vocal improvisation movements, resonance exercises, and musical elements, participants will explore the creative and emotional potential of their voices.
The session will weave together techniques from somatic relaxation techniques, global vocal traditions, group chanting, and looped soundscapes, creating a dynamic and immersive experience.
Fireside time and ritual, Instruments, movement, and artistic practices may also be introduced to support creative exploration and deepen the experience. The unique energy of the group will shape the journey, making each session an evolving, co-created experience.

SCOTLAND’S GREATEST PALACE — The treasures of Hamilton Palace | The WS Society
May 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Hamilton Palace in South Lanarkshire was once one of the premier country houses in the British Isles, replete with fabulous collections of outstanding works of art, furniture, and furnishings.
This fascinating talk will explain and illustrate how the Dukes of Hamilton — premier peers of Scotland — enlarged the palace and amassed their great collections to create one of Europe’s grandest, most ostentatious statements of power, wealth and taste. Beginning in the 16th century, leading authority Dr Godfrey Evans (Principal Curator of European Decorative Arts at National Museums Scotland) traces the architectural development of the palace down to the 19th, when extraordinary interior works of black marble, copious gilding, vibrant furnishing, and exotic ornamentation created a truly majestic whole.
The Virtual Hamilton Palace Trust’s project is to bring the palace alive online for scholars, researchers, and everyone to marvel at this lost magnificence.
The event is free to attend, however a voluntary donation can be made to support the work of the Trust.
Please note the event is held in the Upper Library which is only accessible by stairs.

FAITH AND FREE SPEECH IN SCOTLAND TODAY | The Counting House

FSU Edinburgh Speakeasy
FAITH AND FREE SPEECH IN SCOTLAND
Wednesday 21st May
The Counting House, 34 West Nicolson St, Newington, Edinburgh EH8 9DD.
Panel debate 7.15pm - 9pm, (doors open 6.30pm), bar open until 10.30pm.
In the second of a Spring series of public debates about free speech in Scotland, the FSU returns to The Counting House, 38 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, for a panel discussion, Q and A and social.
Book now to be part of it.
In 2021, Scotland finally abolished its blasphemy law—over 300 years after the execution of Thomas Aikenhead, the Edinburgh student who became the last person in the British Isles to be hanged for blasphemy. Aikenhead’s sacriligious comments were reported to church authorities by fellow students, five of whom testified against him. In his last moments he wrote:
"It is a principle innate and co-natural to every man to have an insatiable inclination to the truth, and to seek for it as for hid treasure."
Thankfully, speaking against religious doctrine no longer carries the death penalty in Edinburgh, however, Scotland’s blasphemy laws were replaced by the highly-concerning Hate Crime Act which threatens arrest, fines and imprisonment of those who transgress against more contemporary beliefs.
This legislation, which provoked disbelief around the world and embarrassed freedom-loving Scots, was opposed by many of the more traditionally religious groups in Scotland, many of whom feared that their beliefs risked being criminalised.
Religious campaigners have been highly effective at shaping the public conversation about free speech issues in Scotland, whether fighting for the rights of street preachers, advocating for pro-life voices or raising concerns over the free speech impacts of proposed "conversion therapy" laws.
The Scottish debate over abortion clinic buffer zones recently went global when US Vice President J.D. Vance claimed that private prayer inside houses near clinics had been criminalized. While the Scottish government disputed Vance’s claim, his remarks resonated with widespread concerns about the state of free speech in Scotland and in the UK as a whole.
Are broader principles of tolerance and freedom compatible with a conservative religious worldview? Should atheists today look to Christians to hone their arguments about tolerance, freedom of conscience and freedom of expression?
Whether you’re a student, a member of a faith community, or simply passionate about human rights, come along to explore these questions and many others concerning the evolving landscape of free speech and religious freedom in modern Scotland.
There will, of course, be plenty of time for discussion, as well as socialising with fellow free speech supporters.

A Digital Assets Bill for Scotland | Edinburgh Law School
May 23, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
The First Minister’s Programme for Government, announced on 6 May, included a commitment to introduce a Digital Assets Bill in the 2025-26 Scottish Parliamentary year. This commitment follows a public consultation on the status of digital assets in Scots private law.
The Edinburgh Centre for Private Law is hosting a symposium on 23 May to discuss the content of the public consultation. It will focus on the topics that have proved most uncertain among consultees or where the implications of recognising the property status of digital assets remain unclear. These include the notion of digital assets having an “independent existence”; their categorisation in the law of property; and their relationship with the law of diligence and insolvency.

The Right Hon Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court
Professor David Fox, Edinburgh Law School
Professor Burkhard Schafer, Edinburgh Law School
