The Mind in Verse: Reading Poetry about Madness | Scottish Poetry Library
May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Poetry and madness have long been intertwined in the popular imagination. History abounds with poets, whose inspiration and insight into life and the human condition have been attributed to experiences of madness or, in medical terms, mental illness. Poetry has had an important role in the lives of those who have treated madness too. Throughout time psychiatrists have also written poetry in search of creative outlets and new ways of understanding their patients and work. In this two-part workshop, we will explore the poetic representations of madness from two distinct perspectives: the patient's and the doctor's. Examining poems written on both sides of the clinical encounter, we will reflect on poetry's role in capturing the complex experience of mental distress and the relationship between doctor and patient throughout history. Texts will be provided in advance of the sessions. --- Mila Daskalova moved from Bulgaria to Edinburgh in 2012 to study literature and never left. She is a researcher and lecturer at the University of Glasgow interested in the history of psychiatry and the role of literature in the representation and treatment of mental illness. She founded and co-edited Podslon (2021-2022), a Bulgarian magazine that explored mental health and illness through art and literature. She is currently working on her first book, News from the Asylum: The Nineteenth-Century Asylum Periodical in Britain, America and Beyond. A Night of Creative Networking | Networking Event for Creative Industries | 56 North
May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Calling all creatives in Scotland!
Join me and 50 other creatives at 56 North in Edinburgh for a night of networking, conversation, and connecting with like-minded individuals who share a background and passion for the creative arts and industries.
Whether you're just starting out, have 10 years of experience, or work as a performer, writer, teacher, fundraiser, crew, composer, etc, you're welcome! This event is open to all creatives, regardless of age*, experience, or background.
What’s the purpose?
The goal of this event is to help creatives feel more connected and meet like-minded people in the city. Photographers need models, models need photographers - Building a creative network and getting to know others in both similar and different fields is so important and valuable. It can open up so many doors and lead to exciting opportunities.
Why?
My name is William (Will), and I’m a Scottish actor based in London. Like many, I moved in search of more work opportunities after feeling that the industry in Scotland was limited, secluded, and unattainable compared to London. I regularly attend networking events in the city, and only recently did I realize, to my knowledge, these events don’t exist in Scotland (or at least not as frequently as they should!).
I’d love for this event, even if just a one-off, to be an informal gathering where like-minded people can meet and discuss their creative backgrounds, passions, interests, and more. I’ve met some of the
best
people at these events in London, and I’d love for Scotland to have that same opportunity.
How will the event run?
The event runs from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at 56 North, 2 W Crosscauseway, Newington, Edinburgh EH8 9JP. Sign in with me at the door and grab a sticker to write down your name alongside another one for your profession! Then head on in, grab a drink at the bar, and feel free to start chatting and getting to know everyone.
Written prompts will be available to take to assist you with asking questions. If you also need a helping hand to be eased into conversation, please let me know, and I am more than happy to do so.
*Please note that due to being a licensed bar, this event is 18+.
For any questions, please email hello@selfledcreates.com or @selfledcreates on social media.

Drawing on original interviews, it will reflect on the role of oral history in introducing voices often neglected by the formal record.

Power of Presence in Action - breaking free of patterns that control you | POPIA place
May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Tomorrow starts TODAY... if you choose POPIA!
Are you ready to break free of the patterns that control you?
We are often unaware of the damaging and unhelpful patterns that repeat throughout our lives. Presence in Action (PIA) is a fascinating, self-resourcing practice that helps us transform how we deal with all we encounter in
every
aspect of our lives, relationships and work.
Unlike other personal development and reflective practices, PIA offers a practical framework to illuminate what is playing out within us. It is a simple, accessible, powerful approach to understanding and engaging with ourselves differently. It also equips us to better support others to comprehend, and change, what might be going on for them.
Crucially, PIA equips us to take personal responsibility for what we feel, say and do, moment to moment; AND it enables us to avoid being manipulated or knocked off balance by what others say and do to us.
Who is this for?
It is for anyone who is committed to make lasting, meaningful personal change. Anyone can benefit from PIA because, once you grasp its principles, it will support you wherever you are; whatever your role(s) in life. People practising PIA include those from diverse walks of life, cultures, nationalities and generations, e.g. individuals, parents, musicians, charity workers, teachers, academics, HR professionals, senior leaders, OD consultants, professional coaches, speaking mentors and supervisors of helping professionals. You will be invited to join and continue to get support from our PIA community following participation in this programme.
About the 4-day Intensive
POPIA is for up to 7 in-person or 10 online participants supported by Louie and Practice Partners from PIA Collective - a community of PIA practitioners. You will experience first-hand how the P6 Constellation framework and Emotions Palette help you NOTICE what is present and current within, between and around you, as you practise in pairs, small groups and in the whole group. You will discover how your thinking, feeling and behavioural patterns repeat across time and situations in your life. In the process of illumination, you will experience insights and transformational shifts that will surprise and delight you. Anyone wanting to become a PIA Practitioner supporting others; or wishing to enhance their professional practice begins with this foundational intensive programme.
Theoretical underpinnings (drawing on fields as diverse as systems thinking, complexity theory, cognitive sciences, cybernetics, neuroscience, Natural Inclusion etc.) will be introduced along the way to enable you to make sense of new ways of noticing, understanding and talking about what is going on for you!
However, those who use the P6 Constellation and Emotions Palette DO NOT need to engage with any of these theoretical underpinnings for it to work its magic!
What you learn, will equip you to act wisely, wholeheartedly and joyfully in all aspects of your life.
POPIA will deliver joys and surprises; it will be challenging and sometimes a bit confusing. This is coherent with the nature of this unusual learning experience. It will call on each of you to let go of what you think you know in order to discover what is currently beyond sight or reach. Through this process you will find yourselves increasingly liberated from what binds and blinds you - releasing you into accessing more of your talents and potential.
You will learn to use the P6 Constellation framework to assist you in deepening and extending your efficacy and artistry in and with life. Through practice you will become better able to see, adapt, communicate and take coherent action in any and all circumstances. You will develop the capacity to get unstuck and to liberate yourself into flow. Increasingly, you will find yourself ever more skilled in navigating the complexities and challenges you face, whatever the context.
During our time together we will make connections between ancient wisdoms and new sciences - helping you to connect to wider patterns in nature and the wider world. We will...
...dive deep and stretch high
...reach outwards and touch inwards
...explore what happens within and between us
...engage lovingly and boldly with our deepest selves
...show up, wholeheartedly, as ourselves with each other
...experiment with ancient wisdom and your embodied knowing
...connect where the sacred meets the systemic within, between and beyond
Throughout our time together, we will share, experience, reflect, play, practice and learn together. We will take advantage of all our senses and sense-making - using our bodies, minds and spirits, not in isolation but as the integrated beings that we are.
On the training, you will receive a P6 Constellation Pocket-pal, a mini Emotions Palette, Processing Workpad and Key fob talisman.
Option for more
POPIA Graduates will be invited to continue learning by joining our PIA Collective Community-in-Practice (CiP), free for one year. You will meet others practising Presence in Action in their daily lives. You will also be able to access additional 1-1 and group learning and practice opportunities. Details will be shared with those completing all four days of the training. After one year of membership, you will have the option to become a paying member of PIA Collective which will enable you to continue benefiting from learning with others.

Perfect for those who cherish Gaelic heritage, this book transcends geographical boundaries, appealing to anyone who values heartfelt storytelling and richly drawn characters. Step back to the summer of 1978, where young Colin Quinn finds himself on South Uist with his charismatic uncle, Ruairidh Gillies. As the world turns its eyes to Scotland’s hopeful journey in the World Cup in Argentina, Colin and Ruairidh embark on a journey of their own, deepening their bond and navigating the complexities of life. This novel offers a vivid portrayal of the Outer Hebrides, capturing the raw beauty of the islands and the fierce, unpredictable elements. Readers will be drawn into the characters’ intimate moments of joy and profound challenges, all set against the stunning natural backdrop of South Uist. Martin MacInture was born in 1965 to a South Uist father and Glaswegian mother, and was brought up in Lenzie. In 1988 he graduated from the University of Aberdeen in medicine, and has attained qualifications in Business and Gaidhealtachd Studies at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. Martin divides his work-time between medicine, writing and storytelling. His previous publications include Ath-Aithne (Re-acquaintance), a collection of short stories which won The Saltire Society First Book Award in 2003 and Gymnippers Dicidian (Wednesday Gymnippers). - Doors: 7pm, event starts: 7:30pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Ahmed Dickinson & Eduardo Martin with support from Lindsay Strachan | West Barns Village Hall
May 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
When Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas first heard the music of fellow countryman Eduardo Martín he felt euphoric. Martín’s style has an expansive sense of freedom that taps into pre Columbus traditions, jazz, flamenco, pop, Afro and traditional Cuban. The guitar is his favored instrument to mirror the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of the Americas’ cultural diversity. Before moving to England, Dickinson Cárdenas took lessons with Eduardo and their friendship, idiosyncratic empathy and mutual respect has since transformed into a vehicle that connects, incorporates and juxtaposes their different generations, their musical ideas and ultimately the spiritual journey that drives this unique record. Our support act for this evening will be local singer songwriter Lindsay Strachan. Hear Lindsay on Stream Rooftop W Harmony by Lindsay Strachan | Listen online for free on SoundCloud
