Fitch Lecture given by Prof. Peter Braam | Edinburgh Futures Institute, The University of Edinburgh

May 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Cultural Experiences
This event is part of the Distinguished Lecture series, which runs four lectures by leading experts every year. This lecture commemorates Davey Fitch (1978-2019), the first Business Development Officer for the University of Edinburgh School of Mathematics. The lecture aims to highlight the impact of Mathematical Sciences. Abstract: "During this talk, I will sketch how studying mathematics unfolded into a career crisscrossing the line between science and startup businesses, for a lifetime. We will see some success, some failures, but above all I hope to convey the tremendous joy in working on the overlap. Some of the technical topics we will encounter are data storage, chip design, machine learning and devops as well as a simple mathematical and business perspectives to illustrate some things that went well and some that didn’t complete." About the speaker: Peter Braam is a scientist and entrepreneur mostly focused on problems in very large scale scientific computing. Originally trained as a mathematician by Sir Michael Atiyah, he was an academic at several institutions including Oxford, CMU and Cambridge. One of his many startup companies developed the Lustre file system which is very widely used. Since 2014 he has focused on computing for the SKA telescope, machine learning for science and holds visiting professorships at Oxford and Waseda (Tokyo). He also rekindled his study of deep mathematics. Information Source: Maxwell Institute of Mathematical Sciences | eventbrite

16mm Film Screening | Emily Beaney | Talbot Rice Gallery

May 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
This is a unique opportunity to see the original 16mm version of Emily Beaney’s film Deviant. An intimate screening of the film (14 minutes) will be followed by a short discussion between the artist and James Clegg, Curator at Talbot Rice Gallery, with a Q&A providing opportunity to ask questions about the film. Deviant was made in collaboration with women who live with endometriosis (EndoWarriors and the specialist endometriosis research team EXPPECT) and is filmed on a beach near Dunbar, where participants shared their embodied experiences. Emphasising the physicality of the medium, Beaney drew connections between the analogue film, the subject matter and the landscape by washing the film in brine and sand, creating complex abstract interruptions in the final work. It is part of a broader investigation into how art might help to translate and give voice to women’s experience of chronic illness. The talk will focus on the process of making the film and what it meant to the participants involved. It will think about the value of using an analogue medium in relation to collaborative projects that centre on embodied experience. It will also provide an opportunity to learn more about Beaney’s broader practice and the other projects she is currently working on. Information Source: Talbot Rice Gallery | eventbrite

Participants will explore a non-academic, non-prescriptive way of accessing the art works, centring, instead, affect and perspective-taking. The workshop is open to anyone: all exercises are beginner-friendly but will still be of interest to experienced practitioners. Information Source: Talbot Rice Gallery | eventbrite

Zoetrope animation workshop | Rutland Court

May 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Craft
In this workshop you will learn how to make your own animated loops. In a relaxed, pressure free environment, Cat will guide you through the process of sketching out ideas, and transforming those ideas into animations, which you will then view using a traditional animation device called a zoetrope. The animations will be made up of 12 drawings (known as frames). These 12 drawings make roughly 1 second of animation, however, as Zoetropes are circular, we create a movement which repeats and looks continuous. This is called an animated loop. A good example of this kind of repetative movement is a bouncing ball, running animal, or a person on a bike. Your ideas can be as simple and abstract or as detailed as you like. After we view your animations on the zoetrope, we can then capture the images in order to share them digitally. If you have a sketchbook, bring it with you to sketch out ideas. But don't worry if not, there will be plenty of paper available for you to use. After the class you will have your original drawings to take away (if you brought a sketchbook, you can stick them in) and i will send digital files of your animations in mp4 or GIF whichever you prefer. Looking forward to seeing you! A bit more info on Zoetropes The Zoetrope is a19th century device which was used to create the illusion of movement. They are one of the origins of film, one of the first ways to make and view animated loops, you might say it is the original GIF. These cycles usually consist of only 12 drawings (frames), but can be anything up to 25 frames. Information Source: Cat | eventbrite

Notes on Water: Fluid Potentialities of an Intermedial Metaphor | Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities

May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Literary Arts
According to Gilles Deleuze, water scenes in film can foster the “promise or implication of another state of perception: a more than human perception” (1986: 80). This event seeks to investigate water as a metaphor and the alternative perception it produces in visual cultural works. Water has frequently been at the core of imaginaries and narratives, being a generative and productive metaphor, as highlighted by various scholars (Bachelard 1942; Boccaletti 2021; Mentz 2023; Starosielski 2012; Strang 2015). In particular, in recent years, water has occupied a central role in shaping new understandings of our engagement with the environment, our past, and our future. Many ecocritical, ecofeminist, and queer studies have embraced the metaphorical power of water, as it allows us to bridge the gap between the human and the nonhuman (Alaimo 2016; Chow 2023; Neimanis 2017). As Astrida Neimanis reminds us, our own wateriness implies that we “have never been (only) human” (2017: 2). Similarly, water is at the core of various Black studies texts, as scholars have explored its regenerative possibilities (Tinsley 2008; Phiri 2024). This event will follow these footsteps, highlighting the need to explore water, in order to foster new ways of being and moving through the world, especially as we are witnessing the increasingly more dangerous consequences of climate change. By focusing on the symbolic and critical uses of water in various geocultural contexts (Latin America, Italy, and Scotland), we aim to reflect on how a single image has produced distinct meanings in different areas, how these interact with each other and flow into broader cultural narratives. Speakers: Alastair Cole is a documentary filmmaker and a senior lecturer in Film Practice at Newcastle University. His most recent feature length film, Iorram (Boat Song) (2021), was released in 50 cinemas across the UK and broadcast on the BBC. After premiering at the 2021 Glasgow Film Festival it screened at festivals internationally from Tallinn Black Nights to Vancouver, Darwin to Dinard - winning multiple awards. His previous feature length documentary Colours of the Alphabet screened at 50+ festivals globally, and was broadcast in 30 languages across 52 countries. His previous short and mid length films have also been broadcast in 27 countries and screened at festivals around the world. His films have also been the centre of UK and international impact campaigns with screenings at the UN, EU and Westminster, as well as at museums, galleries and in hundreds of community settings across the world. See www.tonguetiedfilms.co.uk for more on his work. Magnus Course is Professor of Creative Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh. His research is concerned with the relations between kinship, personhood, and power. He completed his PhD at the London School of Economics in 2005, and the ensuing monograph was published by University of Illinois Press in 2011 as Becoming Mapuche: Person and Ritual in Indigenous Chile. A further monograph on Mapuche kinship, Mapuche Ñi Mongen was published in Chile by Editores Pehuen in 2017. He has subsequently worked on the intersection of fishing and Gaelic culture in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, leading to two films exploring the role of the sea in the Scottish Gaelic imagination: the award-winning short film Muir ar n-Aithreachean and the BBC/Creative Scotland funded feature-length television documentary Iorram, both with Alastair Cole. His most recent film (co-directed with Capucine Tournilhac and Rishabh Raghavan) is Santi Migranti, an exploration of a public arts activism project in Naples. His latest book, Three Ways to Fail: witch / clown / usurper has (finally) been published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. His current research is on the material and social traces of Purgatory throughout Europe for a book-length project provisionally entitled Leaving Purgatory: the afterlives of an afterlife. Geoffrey Maguire is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge. His research focuses on contemporary Latin American culture, with particular interests in queer theory, sexuality studies and ecocriticism. He is the author of The Politics of Postmemory (2017) and Bodies of Water (2024), as well as the co-editor of New Visions of Adolescence (2018). Nicoz Balboa is an Italian visual artist and tattoo artist based in France. His artistic practice spans comics, tattooing, graphic journaling, pyrography and painting, using autobiographical narrative as a tool for exploration and storytelling. His work addresses issues of identity, sexuality and trans experience with a language that alternates between irony, vulnerability and provocation, interweaving elements of the LGBTQIA+ and transfeminist traditions. After studying at the Istituto Europeo di Design di Roma and at ESAG in Paris, Nicoz published several books and graphic novels. These include Born to Lose (Coconino Press, 2017), Play With Fire (Oblomov, 2020; translated into French in 2022 by the Ici-Même publishing house) and Transformer (Oblomov, 2023), which won the prestigious Yellow Kid as Best Book of the Year at Lucca Comics & Games 2023. He also collaborated with Linus magazine between 2020 and 2021. Since 2012 he has travelled the world as a tattoo artist, working in international studios such as Mystery Tattoo Club (Paris), Eight of Swords (New York), Salon Serpent (Amsterdam) and Turbo Zero (Rome). In 2020, he opened Strangeland in La Rochelle, a queer studio dedicated not only to tattooing, but also to exhibitions, events and art workshops. In the same year, he founded the Graphic Journal Club, a creative community that explores the expressive potential of the graphic journal through workshops and sharing sessions. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the US, including BilBolBul in Bologna, Luisa Catucci Gallery in Berlin, MF Gallery in New York and Art's Factory in Paris. Some of his most significant exhibition projects include Drawing Ruined My Life, Mermtrans, Sleeping in a Binder and New Perimeter, in which visual narrative is intertwined with the telling of the trans experience, deconstructing stereotypes through an intimate and irreverent approach. Active on social media, he uses Patreon for Graphic Journal courses, YouTube to document his sketchbooks and Instagram to share his work and interact with the artistic and queer community. The Graphic Journal is a tool for personal expression that combines drawing, writing and reflection. It is a way of observing and narrating one's daily life, but also of exploring deep emotions and inner processes. In my workshops I propose playful and creative exercises inspired by art therapy and autobiographical narration. For me, the Graphic Journal has become a way of getting to know myself better, of dealing with anxieties, questions, scattered thoughts, and at the same time a space of freedom in which form does not matter: you can draw badly, write awkwardly, paste, scribble, mess up. It is the content that matters: that is where you find something real. This event is organised by Dr Alice Parrinello and Dr Marco Ruggieri, and supported by the Susan Manning Workshop Fund from the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, and The Society for Italian Studies. Accessibility: This event will take place at IASH, 2 Hope Park Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9NW. Please see a map here: https://www.iash.ed.ac.uk/location The Seminar Room is on the first floor, and unfortunately IASH does not have a lift. If you have mobility issues and would like to discuss access, please contact iash@ed.ac.uk as soon as possible. Information Source: Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities | eventbrite

Curating at the End of the World | ECA Main Building

May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Fine Art
Curating at the End of the World: Ethics, Sustainability, Beyond Human Intelligences Prof. Krysa’s presentation takes the Helsinki Biennial 2023 edition ‘New Directions May Emerge’ as a case study to reflect on the role of contemporary art biennials in addressing pressing global issues, and the possibility of reimagining curatorial practice beyond the existing paradigms. Taking inspiration from anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing and her seminal book ‘The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins’ 2015, Helsinki Biennial 2023 explored the possibility of a more sustainable and responsible approach to biennial making in times of social, environmental, and technological urgency, through its curatorial framing and practice. Following Tsing’s call to learn from (the art of) 'noticing', the biennial was an invitation to consider how small or otherwise invisible details might prompt possibilities to act, to imagine differently, and reconcile the impact of human intervention, environmental and technological damage. Acknowledging other people, animals, plants, environment, data, and other human and nonhuman entities around us -- as agencies, co-creators, and beneficiaries -- the biennial sought to bring cultural, natural and technological worlds together, to inspire reflection and action. The talk will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session facilitated by Dr. Ileana L. Selejan. Key points include: thinking about the intersections of art and technology through the lens of ecological crisis; the biennial “model”; what types of practices (decentred, non-hierarchical, collaborative, eco-critical, etc.) might lie beyond traditional curatorial approaches. The event presents a unique opportunity for ECA students to gain a deeper understanding of the curation of a major exhibition and reflect upon the implications of such an endeavour while seeking to foster sustainable, ethical practices. Coffee and tea will be provided. Open to the general public. About Joasia Krysa Joasia Krysa is a curator and Professor of Exhibition Research and Director of the Institute of Art and Technology (IAT) at Liverpool School of Art and Design, Liverpool John Moores University, with an adjunct position at Liverpool Biennial. Continuity of Carer in Pregnancy and Childbirth - is it possible? | Pregnancy and Parents Centre, 188 Pleasance

May 9, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Edinburgh
Cultural Experiences
Mavis Kirkham is a long retired midwife and midwifery researcher, greatly saddened by the state of birth and midwifery in the NHS and trying to understand what can be done. Her clinical focus was home birth and a rural birth centre. Her abiding research interest is in peoples’ relationship with, and efforts to control their work and its setting. This started with a study of the history of workers co-operatives (1972) and for many years has been concerned with childbearing women and midwives. Last year she edited Freebirth Stories with Nadine Edwards. She is the proud mother of Anna Fielder who published Going into Labour: childbirth in capitalism last November. Mavis would like to examine possible reasons why maternity services management seems not to be able to tolerate true continuity of carer. It is a big threat to all they stand for: standardisation, control of services and seeing midwives as a resource which can be moved to plug the gaps in services. We can then think about how to make our voices heard so as to change expectations and values.  Please arrive from 6.30 for provided refreshments and social time before a prompt atart at 7. All proceeds benefit the good work of the charity The Pregnancy and Parents Centre. + Information Source: Daisy Dinwoodie PPC | eventbrite

Anns an òraid seo, tha Rob Dunbar agus Wilson MacLeòid a’ sgrùdadh leasachadh coimhearsnachd Ghàidhlig Dhùn Èideann agus a comainn shòisealta is chultarail thar nan linntean. Ged a tha cuid den bheachd nach eil ceangal làidir aig a’ Ghàidhlig ri Dùn Èideann, tha an cànan air a bhith an làthair anns a’ bhaile airson còrr air mìle bliadhna. Chithear seo ann an iomadh ainm-àite Gàidhlig anns a’ bhaile. Bho dheireadh an t-seachdamh linn deug air adhart, thàinig barrachd is barrachd Ghàidheal dhan bhaile a’ sireadh obrach. Bha Dùn Èideann na dhachaigh do dh’iomadh sgrìobhadair, sgoilear, ministear agus ceannard cultarail cliùiteach thar nam bliadhnaichean. Thigibh còmhla rinn gus faicinn mar a tha suidheachadh na Gàidhlig anns a’ bhaile ag atharrachadh, le cothroman air foghlam Gàidhlig a’ fàs agus an cànan a’ faighinn barrachd aithne. Bidh an òraid anns a’ Ghàidhlig le eadar-theangachadh mar-aon gu Beurla. Bidh an tachartas cuideachd a’ toirt a-steach ceòl bho Laura Penman, clàrsair òg à Dùn Èideann agus neach-labhairt na Gàidhlig. Bha i anns a’ chuairt dheireannaich ann am farpais Ceòladair Òg Traidiseanta na Bliadhna 2025. Mun luchd-labhairt ’S e Rob Dunbar na Ollamh na Ceiltis aig Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann. Tha e na ùghdar torrach air poileasaidh mhion-chànanan agus còraichean mhion-chànanan. ’S e Wilson MacLeòid Ollamh Emeritus na Gàidhlig aig Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann. Am measg nan leabhraichean aige tha ‘Gaelic in Scotland: Policies, Movements, Ideologies’. Mu Dhùn Èideann 900 Gus 900 bliadhna den bhaile againn a chomharrachadh, tha na tachartasan seo ag innse sgeulachd siubhal Dhùn Èideann tro na linntean, bho Chathair Dhaibhidh san 12mh linn suas chun 21mh linn, Cathair na h-Iomadachd. Seo an dàrna òraid ann an sreath de cheithir tachartasan mun Ghàidhlig ann an Dùn Èideann a tha air an cur air dòigh le Ionad Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann . In this lecture, Rob Dunbar and Wilson McLeod explore the development of Edinburgh’s Gaelic community and its social and cultural institutions over the centuries. Although it is often thought that Gaelic has little connection with Edinburgh, the language has had a presence here for more than a thousand years. This can be seen through the numerous Gaelic placenames in the city. From the late seventeenth century onwards, increasing numbers of Highlanders flocked to the city seeking work.Edinburgh has been home to many prominent Gaelic writers, scholars, ministers and cultural leaders over the years. Join us to examine the changing position of the language in the modern city, as the number of Gaelic education opportunities grow and the language receives greater recognition. The talk will be in Gaelic with a simultaneous interpretation into English. The event will also include music from young Edinburgh clàrsach player and Gaelic speaker, Laura Penman. She was a finalist in the Young Traditional Musician of the year competition, 2025. About the speakers Rob Dunbar is Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh. He is a prolific author on minority language policy and minority language rights. Wilson McLeod is Professor of Gaelic at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of ‘Gaelic in Scotland: Policies, Movements, Ideologies’. About Edinburgh 900 To mark the 900th anniversary of our city, these events tell the story of Edinburgh's journey through the centuries – from being the City of David in the 12th century to being the City of Diversity in the 21st century. This is the second of four events about Gaelic in Edinburgh organised by Ionad Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann.
