Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Great coffee and loose-leaf tea available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that. You can stay until we open to the general public at 9.30am. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. Feel free to bring a snack with you, so long as it's not smelly! The local bakery opposite opens at 8am ish if you want to grab a pastry from them. If you're using a laptop, please have it fully charged for your writing session as we only have one plug socket. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. About Abi Farrell Abi Farrell was raised in rural Oxfordshire on a soundtrack of vocal powerhouses spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton and Carole King. Named 'an artist on the rise.. a considerable talent' by Blues and Soul Magazine, Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which is equally at home creating moving, introspective ballads as it is high-energy, empowering anthems. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background. Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of The Milk and pressed to limited edition 7 vinyl. Her releases have been championed by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, who praised Abi's writing 'proper soul for the 21st century'. 'Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and subsequently led to Abi performing the track on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. Though Abi has been captivating live audiences since her teenage years, she has recently opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has performed at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Pizza Express Live Holborn, The 100 Club, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Servant Jazz Quarters, Colours Hoxton, Oslo Hackney, and The Louisiana, Bristol. In addition to her own artistry, Abi has performed backing vocals for many of her peers: Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Carmy Love, The Milk, PM Warson, Denver Cuss and James Bone, and continues to lend her voice to music she loves. This show will mark Abi's first ever headline show in Brighton. It will celebrate the arrival of her brand new single '47 Days' and further new music due to arrive this summer. I started teaching watercolours in March 2023 which is exciting because its been more than a year now! Multiple times week I run beginner watercolour classes where each session we have a different theme, generally to do with nature. This year I'm looking forward to running day courses, or some courses that span over a few weeks where we can get really stuck in to a particular subject. My background is in illustration which I studied in Bristol from 2016 - 2019. I have previously worked in a bit of editorial illustration under the name 'Zara Wilkins'. The thing I love most about watercolours is that it is so versatile. There are so many different ways it can be used, so many effects that you can create with different levels of water, pigment, paper weights and brushes. There doesn't really seem to be an end to what you can do with it. Teaching continues to be such a fun experience and I really look forward to every class I run.
