Richard Carter, a self-taught painter, arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley in 1971, hailing from New Jersey. From 1972 to 1978, he served as the studio assistant to renowned artist Herbert Bayer at his Red Mountain studio. During this period, Carter explored various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, and environmental works. He also contributed significantly to the transformation of the Holy Cross Power House into the Aspen Center for Visual Arts, which later became the esteemed Aspen Art Museum, alongside two other Aspen artists. Carter's studio, nestled along the banks of the picturesque Roaring Fork River in Basalt, serves as his creative sanctuary.
